Dont you already have your psp?
why cant you keep it?
its not just about the Vita, its about the PS3 as well, since they're doing the same thing there as well with the PS2 games. can't plug the disk in, but you can download them.

so yeah, sony can go to hell now :)
(and this is from some one that used to love the PlayStation)
BUT YOU STILL GOT A PLAYSTATION 2 HOW LAZY ARE YOU?!
Im serious what is bad with having to keep your ps2 on your shelve?!
Lack of shelf space, I mean I only have room for so many of my consoles and it's not that we don't have shelf space it's this.

I have 50+ ps2 games I own and am still working on beating (I got a ps2 later on in it's life), none of them will play on the PS3 I have (Again late to the party). The only way to play PS2 games on my PS3 is to rebuy them on the PSN. Now this wouldn't be so bad but the problem is that the PS3 could play PS2 games before with no problems. Why should I pay to play my PS2 games on a system that had the function before hand? It's not keeping the system it's how it makes no since we have to deal with that when their was a option sony got rid of. My PS2 is on it's last legs right now and I would have liked to have PS2 play back on my PS3 so I could also have back up saves if something were to happen.
They removed the function so the ps3 would cost less to make it was a business choice.
The ps3 cost too much so they decided to strip it down a bit and the only thing they could remove was the backward's compatibility.

And... Reported!
Some people would need the extra cash from trading in their old PSP to be able to justify buying a Vita, it is a very legitimate complaint. So before you decide to inappropriately describe us all as "autistic kids", try to think about why someone might be upset a little bit rather than not at all.

EDIT:
For those of you saying that this is like NES owners complaining that SNES couldn't play their games. It is not the backwards compatibility that is the problem, it is the denial of service. The service exists, but it is being denied to certain customers in favor of corporate ease. This is bad customer service and adding another shovel of dirt to a console that is already in trouble sales-wise.

The motheboard of the ps3 was fitted with the same cpu as the ps2 alongside the cell processor. So an extension would have to be grafted onto the motherboard. which is impossible.

1. Never having owned a PSP
2. Never owning a UMD or
3. Never wanting a PSV in the first place.

Why are you even here? If you fit into any of the three categories above, your opinion on the matter is moot. I'll be picking up my PSV tomorrow and I will enjoy the hell out of it. Just like I have enjoyed my PSP for all these years.
Yeah, I was noticing that trend too.

Still, I DO own a PSP. I own it for games like Persona 3 Portable, Jeanne d'Arc, Parasite Eve 3rd Birthday, and FF7 Crisis Core.

... that said, the PSV didn't sound particularly appealing. I can't see how it's superior to the PSP I already own. So... yeah.

I actually wasn't thrilled with the "you can rebuy games you already own for 5 bucks" service anyway. Thats... already a rip-off. I have my PSP, why would I want to buy a PSV AND pay 5 bucks per game to redownload games I can already play on my PSP?

So yeah, guys... this is Sony deciding to just rip off the Japanese instead of ripping off the rest of the world. Why are you so upset?

Because things sometimes stop working. My nephew dropped my DS and it's close to useless now, my NES got a problem that makes it impossible to get an image on the screen, my friend's GameCube got some problems reading the discs because there's some issues with the laser. We want backwards compatibility because it gives us some security that the games we've collected through the years will stay with us. Refusing to give us a service they have already made and give us a flimsy reason why we wont get it isn't what Sony needs to gain popularity. Sony is in fact denying their previous customers something they desire. It's hardly the best way to thank their customers for their support.

"wanting" =! "willing to shell out money for it"

If you threw a Vita at my face, with memory card and my PSP library included, I would sure take it.

But every week seems that Sony wants to prevent me to actually be willing to give them the money.

I will keep my PSP. By not buying Vita.

I kid you not, I could still auction off the PSP to help pay for the Vita expenses. I have no special attachment to my PSP that would prevent me from selling it.

But buying a new system and still hump around with the old one on me? I am already carrying wallet, cellphone and a mp3 player. Now TWO different consoles? What the hell?

The point of a PSP is the second P.

So... it's the money is what I got from the article. The biggest reason for that is because of one line:

Yoshida went on to argue that UMD games are cheaper in Europe and the US than they are in Japan, meaning western gamers are more likely to just rebuy the games rather than use the transfer service.
What that tells me is one of three things. The first being the most likely; that they figure western gamers are more likely to rebuy games (in their mind) so they shouldn't even offer a cheaper alternative. The second being that it cost a decent amount of money to host the games on their services. Though I doubt that given the number of cheap but large games on their service. And the third being that they just don't understand that many people don't like the idea of rebuying things they already own as a general rule of thumb. At least from my experience.

Ok fine here is another reasons why the Vita not having it is stupid.

Transitional problems with a launch of a system. One things that help people buy a brand new expensive game system is the fact that if the launch titles or first year amount of games didn't appeal to them they could at least play their old games on it to pass time.

Well, I bought most of my PSP games digitally and the games I do own on UMD aren't avaialble for download so I wouldn't benefit from this transfer program anyway. Maybe that is what Sony is thinking, still, some people may have alot of downloadable games on UMD like Lunar, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy Tactics, etc...

Sony just doesn't want this thing to succeed. Well, atleast PS1 compatibility is coming.

People claiming that backwards compatibility isn't needed are wrong. Sony used to understand the value of backward compatibility, Nintendo understands it now too. Also reading these comments about the PS3 not having PS2 compatibility is confusing, people do realize that the launch model had PS2 compatibility.

3. Japanese language games are not sold on the Playstation network. (Edit: in Australia)
Problem is easily solved by signing up to the Japanese PSN. Or whatever they call it now. I've been a member for years and have been DLing my games digitally from there for a long time now. Just be warned that you can only attach a single PSN account to a single Vita at this point in time.
If you don't mind my asking, which game are you looking forward to? I just ordered Tales of Innocence and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival.
Lol, the part about backwards compatibility in your post made me laugh. So, what, is everyone just planning to sell their PSPs as soon as they get a Vita. I can see this being an issue if you are like me, and need to sell your psp to be able to afford a Vita, but if you can afford your vita without selling the PSP, then it doesn't really seem like there's much of a problem. But that's just me I guess..
As much as I would like a Vita, I don't have any money to buy one. If I had the money, I would. Sony certainly isn't doing the Vita any favors though. I understand from a business sense that it would simply be much too costly to make the software for us over here if what they said about us not having as many psps or demand for psp games is right, but it still pisses people off enough to not buy the console, or at least say they won't. I can see them conceding and making the software conversion if the sales of the vita were really tanking over here though, but only if it were doing close to as bad as the PSP go did.
Anyways, in conclusion, I don't really care that the vita is not backwards compatible, because the game line-up still looks fairly good, and if I had the money, I would definitely buy it. And on a separate note, glad to see someone taking an interest in Tales of Innocence R :). If they released it over here in the US before there are many JRPGs on the Vita, I think that it would work pretty well (assuming the vita doesn't tank over here)

But you were still silly enough to actually buy a DSi despite this. Rather than... and it's crazy i know but bare with me here... buying a normal DS or DS Lite instead which still features the GBA slot.

((Or alternatively being like me and not buying a DS at all. Screw not being able to play my gameboy color games on that thing, I was not buying into those kinds of shenanigans when my GameBoy Advance could play them just fine :p As far as I was concerned they wouldn't see a cent from me till they came back with a new handheld that could do EVERYTHING my GBA does plus more. XD
and then I just kinda grew out of them anyway))

Yeeeaaaaah, no, yeeauhno.

I am not buying Persona 3 Portable again for full price. Unless, of course, I can use the account on my PSP that I digitally purchased it on and download it again on the VITA.

If not, I call bullshit. Absolute bullshit.

Aside from that...
"When you compare that to the price of games here, PSP games in Japan are sold at a much higher price, so people see the value in spending the $5 to $10 to get the digital copy," he said. "But when the games are already sold at a lower price in the U.S. we see less value in introducing that kind of system."

And I suddenly reminded of Capcom's excuse to cancel Megaman Legends 3. Hmm...

At any rate, I'm still keeping my PSP. At this point the Vita only has like...what, 3 possible titles that are not a re-release of an already existing PS3 game. And they're not even that awesome.

Come on, Sony. You should've learned from the 3DS launch. At least the 3DS has backwards compatibility for free. Which...now that I think about it, the Vita actually makes the 3DS look good now. Huh.

I'll admit I could care less about this since I won't be getting a Vita ever. But...well, we'll see. I think it's a dumb move by Sony, but time will tell.

And yet people around here still look shocked when I tell them I'm not getting a vita >.>
I swear every time there's a news article with SONYs name in it it's just more bad news for them..
Heck, they've been on a downward spiral pretty much since 2006...

Translation: "Stupid round-eye fanboys will buy their games all over again, and love us even more for it! Waahahha"

Seriously... "Games are cheaper" over here is an excuse to make you buy them all over again? Wow.
