Ah yes, Sony hates admitting they lost so they're just gonna say everybody else isn't actually competing with them so they always win. Unless Sony is beating them of course, then they're competing with them. Sony is such a sore loser.
To be fair even on these forums most people have discounted the Wii as competition to Sony and MS this gen. I don't see the point in making fun of the first corporate suit to say what most gamers have been saying for years.

It's funny how a console being different from the others is apparently a bad thing. We don't need three consoles doing almost the same thing. Two is enough.
Sony is a sore loser, I guess. They can't all be as successful as the PS2.
Its not a console being different from other that makes it bad. Its the complete shift in market and mishandling of 3rd party support that made the Wii undesirably to its more loyal fans.

People didn't want the Wii to be just like the other 2 consoles. They wanted games that A) weren't marketed to the casual crowd and B) were capable of a better online experience.

And I wouldn't be calling Sony a sore loser either. They profited from the PS3 after a while. Nintendo lost a chunk of cash recently because Wii sales have been at a snail's pace for 2 years now.

Only Sony could put out a bullshit statement like that.

Nintendo has already sold me this thing. All that remains is for money to change hands.

Launch titles I'm most looking forward to:
Pikmin 3
New Super Mario Bros. U

I find it funny that the people who are defending Nintendo are saying that Sony is just being a sore loser. Its funny because the PS3 and 360 actually turned a profit while the Wii slowly lost Nintendo money as sales slowed down right after they boomed.

Guess that's what happens when you don't support the 3rd party devs and shun the gamer market that brought you to this point. You lose money when you don't sell games people want, no matter how cheap your console is.

We'll see how Wii U sales go, it will be the most expensive console on the market for at least a full year. That and casual gamers aren't the best repeat customers.

Also doesn't help that most non-gamers don't know what the Wii U is. Hell, CNN's video game journalist called at first thought the Wii U was just a new controller. He also called Pikmin 3 a "kids title".

Nintendo needs to fix that fast.

Nintendo - 1st Annual Loss over the life of the company over 30 years.
Sony - 4th Strait annual loss separated by 1 year making money and 8 other strait annual losses.
MS - Office sure does make a lot of money, we practically wrote off every single 360 unit ever made.

I find it funny how you use falls information and act all high and mighty.

Nintendo was making money even when the sales of the Wii slowed down because they were still selling at least as good as the competition, if not even better. Just last month the Wii sold 171.500 units (and 113.500 3DS) in the US, while xbox sold 160.000. Sony declined to give any numbers, which is really reassuring.

They lost money because they sold 4.5 million 3DS handheld's at a loss in the first year.

[speculation]
If we assume they sold it at a loss of 50$ (remember the 100$ price drop), that's 225.000.000$ of losses just on sold consoles.
[/speculation]

That's why they lost money. The Wii was a full success in a financial aspect.

Also, this is the 1st annual loss in the history of the company.
Sony has 4 years of losses in a row and MS earns practically only on Office and Windows sales.

OT:
Generations aren't based on the power of the console, but on the time when it comes out. If the Gamecube was the same generation as PS2, then is the Wii with the PS3. It's as simple as that. Just because it's different and takes a different take on the same thing doesn't mean it's out of the generation.

Sony can talk all they want. All I see is someone begin a bad loser. Well, we lost this battle, but not really. We actually never have been a competition. What? You ask about the Mii rip offs and the motion controls? I can't hear you... the connection is bad... ente... tunn..*shhhh* *toooooo toooooooo tooooooo*.

This actually makes a lot of sense for all of Nintendo as a whole. As a company they aren't big enough or have connections or patents to create a top of the line system so their only choice to stay alive is to remain underpowered while carving out a sustainable niche. I'm just happy it's working so far.

There should be a topic just for that episode, it's one of the best Extra Credits episode.
Not only is gaming imature as an industry, gamers themselves are too.
I completely agree, but people on the Escapist love to hate on EC.
The thread would just end up as another Extra Credits vs Jimquisition flamewar.

I had no idea there were so many Nintendo fanboys on the escapist. This is a perfectly reasonable statement, the Wii is not a direct competitor in the same way the PS3 and 360 are.

If anything saying Nintendo carved out their own niche is a big compliment, but I guess seeing one of the three console developers talk about one of the others is a red flag to you kids.

...so, people wanted the Wii to be just like the other two consoles in terms of gaming? While we're at it, let's throw in an achievement system too. That'll make it unique!

And I wouldn't be calling Sony a sore loser either. They profited from the PS3 after a while. Nintendo lost a chunk of cash recently because Wii sales have been at a snail's pace for 2 years now.
Keywords: after a while and recently. The Wii still dominated in sales and that won't change anytime soon. Sony is still trying to disqualify Nintendo, as if in preparation for the chance that Wii U makes lightning strike twice. That's pretty sore loser-ish to me.

I don't really see this as justification or anything. To me, it sounds like an industry professional's commentary on the state of his field, and his comments seem totally valid. At least, I know what he's trying to say, though it may be hard to articulate.

Of course, the average forum poster misses the point and takes random sentences to irrational extremes. I mean, look at them (overgeneralized blanket statement).

I still think the tablet controller looks awful and the XBox ripoff has the thumbsticks in the wrong places. This will probably be another Nintendo home console I won't give a damn about. Never was a fan of Nintendo's first party games anyway.
Here's a perfect example of Nintendo hating. You want to badmouth Nintendo so much that you go offtopic for it.
Seriously. That was really out of nowhere...

I don't get what the whole reaction is about, he's kind of right here. In fact, I remember Nintendo saying with the Wii that they wanted to go for a different crowd, and just recently with the WiiU that they don't find themselves in competition with Sony or Microsoft. It's not like he's saying anything new. Whether or not it should be excluded from classification as a Gen 7 console I guess varies. I personally see it as Gen 7, but for me a Gen 7 that didn't do for me what the other two did and for me seemed not worth it.

I've been meaning to ask, is your avatar of someone holding the decapitated head of an elf?
How does that look anything like a decapitation?
o_O
Because it looks like her neck just sorta stops and then there's black underneath it, and then the hand up top looks like it's holding the head by the hair. So the end result is from my end it looks like someone holding the severed head of an elf.
