Yeah yeah, I'm asking for recommendations, something I hoped I'd never have to do. Space Opera Anime. Or science fiction anime in general. Any good ones in the last couple years? Or will I need to stick with the 90s? Seen Cowboy Bebop, currently going through Outlaw Star.

I cannot recommend Cowboy Bebop enough... which happened in 1998. Unless you're counting the movie (2001) or the game (2005), which is considered canon. Anyway you're probably acquainted with it if you're asking for non-90s space opera anime. If you're not, though, I envy you, because you're in for something awesome and wondrous.

Every man and his dog is going to recommend Cowboy Bebop (and with good reason).

So I'll suggest Outlaw Star, which is slightly less popular, but not exactly obscure either :D

It was one of the first 'proper' anime series I watched, and unlike 90% of the stuff I watched when I was younger, I can still watch it and consider it one of my favourite shows of all time.

Space Battleship Yamato is supposed to be good, but you'll have to make sure not to get the edited American version.

Recently I have discovered a rather old space opera anime by the name of Legend of Galactic Heroes, a slightly obscure classic ova, which has proved quite interesting. It has a wide variety of intelligent characters, realistic conflicts, epic space battles, a rich backstory, and this unique historian like perspective from which you view this 110 episode series.

there is the pretty funny Irresponsible Captain Tylor which is a parody of the genre

Martian Successor Nadesico,Supposed to be a parody but seems to forget that. Still a decent show.

I may add more once I can get on MAL and remember things I've watched.

Never saw Outlaw Star but I have heard it was good. A Sci-Fi anime I would have to recommend is Steins;Gate. It is a really good show and I recommend the Visual Novel as well.

If you want the definative anime space opera I suggest Legend of Galactic Heroes, 110 episodes 6 movies and hundreds of characters. Its old (it started in 1988) but it has a detailed world, well written characters with understandable motivations and continuous well put together plot. It's not licensed in the states, but there is a Singapore version with English subtitles.
By the same author is Tytania, which is shorter, availible in the US, just not as well rounded or completed ( I think they where hoping for a second season, which never came, to continue the plot.
VOTOMs and Macross also get recomendations.

Scifi is so rarely done well in anime (trending towards rom-com and dramedies).

Still, some good generic scifi: Armitage, Birdy, Pychopass, Redline, Parasite Dolls, Bubblegum Crisis, Kiddy Grade, Soul Link, Code Geass, Jyu Oh Sei

Spacier fare (dunno about "opera"): Tenchi GXP, Banner of the Stars, Captain Tylor, Glass Fleet, Heroic Age, Nadesico, Vandread, Gundam (I like Wing, 0083, 8th MS Team, X, and Seed), and Macross (some of the newer fare, although Plus is also good).

You mileage may vary, I liked most of these.

Star Blazers was the first "space opera" anime I immediately thought of right off the bat... Then, as I scrolled down the other suggestions... I was surprised no one has suggested Captain Harlock yet... *pauses* So, out of all of the suggestions I could give you...

I suggest Space Pirate Captain Harlock... It's the first serious series I watched and I still enjoy how much it impacted my suggestions for other anime of the classic and modern variety... (Also, I love that ship... It's awesome...)

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is quite good, though it has one of the most unintentionally funny lines to date.

I'm not really an anime fan; I've only seen a couple. There are two that I still recommend, and really, they're the only ones I recommend:

Wings of Honneamise (more reality-based than anything else I've seen) and
Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket

Of course, I have every episode of Read or Die, but that's specifically because it's such a cool idea. Oh right, and I have all the Battle Athletes DVDs.

Okay, maybe I'm more than just 'not really an anime fan'.

There is only 1 true space opera anime:

Memories (the first movie: Magnetic Rose)

There is an opera in space and it's an anime.

I just finished VanDread, not bad. It gets a little harem-y, but it still has some quality.

However I really suggest Last Exile. It qualifies as "space opera" only by a shoestring that you don't find out until later in the series. Otherwise it has a more "steampunk" asthestic, but the story is VERY space opera.
