A wallop to the shoulder worked fine for me. My dad did that when I did a bad until I was about 4 and... Well, I didn't get a single detention through secondary school.
Don't see why associating doing bad things and bad things happening to you from an early age is a bad thing. Beating your kid into a pulp, I can see why that's bad, but a "knock that off" smack every now and again seems acceptable.

That said, I'm not sure it's how I'd treat my kids. Not because I think it's bad parenting, I just don't even have it in me to throw a mouse that the cat brought in back into the cold without feeling guilty for the rest of the day.
I don't think I could hurt my own child if I wanted to.

A stern warning/saying NO! then a light smacking. Just like you do with a dog that has an accident in the house.

Reward good behavior to reinforce, punish bad but bot so severely they're scared of you, ignore them when screaming....keep them active to tire them out - train and socialize them

Light smacking can be a legit tool used at the right time and with the right intent...I can see myself smacking my children

All the physical abuse crap be damned - That and the H&S rubbish can go move to utopia island where everything's perfect. If I feel that my child needs a smack to punish or reinforce a message/warning....then yeh I will

The kids around the area I grew up in that didn't get a good whack, would pretty much control their parents. Telling them to go fuck them selves, even going to attack them. Me, I wouldn't dare, even to this day and I'm 20... Because I would have been killed.

there is a big difference between not hitting your kids and not being a parent, sounds like you had pretty bad parents if you were in fear for your life from them

Based on the studies I have read, spanking is ineffective as compared to other methods of discipline. The reason for this is that it is punishment, in contrast with reinforcement. Assuming that the goal of spanking is to change behavior, and moreover, that spanking is among the least effective means of doing so, I think that other methods, such as reinforcement, are preferable.

Eh, smacking a dog is actually a poor means of preventing accidents. If such a method is employed, it has been found that dogs have a tendency to have accidents more discretely in response. Based on what I have read, the best means to prevent a puppy from having accidents is to become more aware of the times at which a puppy is most likely to need to go outside. It should then be rewarded for taking care of business in the appropriate place.

I happen to know for a fact my siblings and I would have been completely unruly if my mother did not occasionally spank us.
In fact, I reckon she did not do it often enough. She was far too lenient with us. We were seriously little shits.

That does not mean it is required for every punishment, or that every child needs it. Just that it is not something TERRIBLE AND AWFUL that we need to ban forever.

Is it terrible and awful? Generally speaking, no. However, it is ineffective as compared to other methods.

People have to understand there's no one correct rule or method to raising/teaching a child. You have to adapt to the behaviour and attitude of the child. Method "A" may work on Child #1 but not on Child #2.

I was beaten with a bamboo stick when I was a kid, so fuck spanking.

Anecdotal evidence can be used to more effectively illustrate a point, but it is rather weak support in and of itself.

It wroks for my dog. He hasnt had an accident yet in doors. Then again, I pay attention because you should pay attention to your dog anyways. Be he had an accident his first few weeks here after her learned the rules and needed a small reinforcer.

Well, the good news is that it really isn't necessary. As a matter of fact, it is a fairly ineffective means of achieving the desired end.

depends on your child. always remain flexible! if you child is a saint and reason actually get through to him, then obviously dont spank him. if not, well, spank him a few and see what happens.

also, dont be me. i would use my belt on any child i could the moment my patience runs out.

Though I didn't mean killed quite so literally... I guess it could have been debated on how good my parents are. They started to neglect us when they started playing MMO's and they'd beat us when we were bad. Though they did love and care for us and did turn us into, well I'd say okay people. I wouldn't say I'm really an arsehole and I try to get along with most people... I don't like hurting people out side of competitive fighting (sparring and such at the gym)and neither one of us have ever been to jail.

As for the other kids around us, not so much. Again, as said... I didn't agree with what my parents did... I think it was extreme and I would never do that to my child. I wouldn't be able to look my self in the mirror if I did that.

I just don't think that punishing your kids or giving them a smack on the hand automatically equals they are going to be violent when they get older. I feel there are more things that factor into that. Mainly meaningless violence. The punishments I got were pretty extreme, an out-dated method from 50's and 60's time... However we got punished and beaten for being bad... Whilst I feel those that turn out bad are those that got beaten simply because daddy was drunk or mummy wanted to put her sig out and an ashtray wasn't there.

I use to get it pretty hard, for even the smallest of things. I still remember getting smacked so hard, it left a mark. I would like to note, I have lots of hate towards my father and humanity. Take that as you will.

He's done kind things that make me like him, but there's always the anger... and when he does almost anything annoying or rude, or gets angry I get pissed off.

Look, unless you're smacking your child so hard that you're hitting the back of their head, then there's really no problem with it. The only consequence I can think of is MAYBE having some negative effects later in life, but I'm even skeptical of that.

Can't say. I was spanked. That was my fathers way of punishment. My mothers was just straight out psychological abuse, reinforced by her church.

Guess which one fucked me up, but which turned me into an A-Okay kind of guy.
