A wallop to the shoulder worked fine for me. My dad did that when I did a bad until I was about 4 and... Well, I didn't get a single detention through secondary school.
Don't see why associating doing bad things and bad things happening to you from an early age is a bad thing. Beating your kid into a pulp, I can see why that's bad, but a "knock that off" smack every now and again seems acceptable.
That said, I'm not sure it's how I'd treat my kids. Not because I think it's bad parenting, I just don't even have it in me to throw a mouse that the cat brought in back into the cold without feeling guilty for the rest of the day.
I don't think I could hurt my own child if I wanted to.
