Astartes fight avatars of dark gods, orc-hordes, eldars, robots bend on ending all life.
Chief fights some religious aliens...
I'm going for the badasses here.
These "religious aliens" are bent on destroying all life, as are the zombies which chief also fights. Both have means to do so.
.
It was meant as a joke.
I simply pointed out how insanly over the top some of the enemies of the Astartes are. Originally I was thinking about comparing the messengers of chaos (Big freakin' daemons) against grunts (The løittle halo-enemies that freak out if you kill their comander and start crying). But I feared some fanboys would rage about that.

Look at that, LOOK AT IT. That s why Spartans would win. I mean they FLIP in the air.

NOTE: I have never played a 40K game, nor now anything about their universe. I'm just adding full to a fire.

...that's all they can do?
I'm incredibly unimpressed.

Wow, that was quite, erm, quite...

...in-depth, that's the word I'm looking for. Of course, if we choose to go down that route then his chiefyness would get some special rules (he is a hero char after all):

'Tank flipper' - Automatically fixes one crew stunned, shaken or engine damaged result within 6 inches per whole turn

'The one Gaunt gets' - His squad never retreats.

'Independant char' - Can leave and join any friendly squad.

'Duel-wield' - In the fluff SIIs can fire rocket launchers duel wielded, whilst running at around 40 miles per hour, hitting a target at 100meters exactly. I say chief should be able to fire his assault rifle as an 'assault' weapon.

etc. etc.

Also, Chief can 'flip' tanks, that's a four if ever there was one(S), in the fluff he often duels Sangheili warriors, so a four there (WS). His shield takes almost the brunt of an airstrike during training, he's hurt and it has collapsed but it saves his life and he goes on to punch the next one out of the way (Inv Sv - 4).

Conclusion of thread: (1)the only people thinking the Chief would win(/1) have absolutely (2)NO idea what an Astartes is.(/2)
1. I do!
2. I do!

There, I think chief could win and I know what an astartes is. They are members of the Adeptus Astartes, aka Space Marines, aka SPEEEEZ MUHREENZ!...
aka 'those glory-grabbing, in-human, MUTANT, unpredictable, sometimes dishonourable, High n'mighty, poster boy twats'. Yeah, I'm a guards player, the true defenders of humanity (if you take it that a defender of humanity has to be HUMAN), and probably one of the most heroic - discounting the Space Wolves.

Anyway, back on topic: a plasma weapon has a chance of killing the user with every shot, MC can slice a space marine's arm off (lets see him liquidise my skull now *****) with his energy sword, the chain sword would break itself on the energy sword, most space marines seem to go helmetless (headshot honcho), Chief survived an airstrike, a bolt pistol is a semi-auto (lets say) RPG-7/current day RPG - Chief could take a few of those as the SPNKR tech is presumably far in advance of the humble RPG, it doesn't say battle brother - it could be some dipshit scout who is now completely screwed...

I could go on, they are reasonably even if you peek into Chief's fluff as well as the SMs - if we don't use chief's fluff, we can't use SMs so we begin to talk about people who can be killed by las pistols and who can go as fast as a guardsman.

Go Chief!

[small]Sorry for any terrible grammar or punctuation, I'm on a relatives laptop which is quite slow.[/small]
The key problem with the bolt pistol argument is that the bolt pistol fires a .75 caliber round, which is larger than, say the Halo sniper round. In Halo, the sniper downs your shields with a single shot, and kills with a headshot. So one bolt pistol round, rocket propelled round mind you, would down his shields instantly. And then explode, most likely killing him or at least damaging his armor in some form. Even if one round didn't kill him, a bolt pistol has 6 to 10 rounds in it. Also, since it doesn't say battle brother, it could also imply that it is anything up to a Chapter Master.

On a side note, only important SM's seem to go helmetless from what i've noticed. Which is still stupid, you think higher ranked SM's would try to protect their face from bullets..... *sigh*

Side-side note: Guard FTW!

Master Chief vs an astates. I'd favor Master Chief, because 'plot protection and luck' are unquantifiable factors. You can argue the tech and theorize about tactics all you want, but the simply fact is Astartes die all the time, the Chief simply doesn't. A spartan vs an astartes would be a more fair match up, though as a general rule of thumb the 40k universe exists on scales little to no other settings match.

Being bored, and a nerd, I was thinking about the similarities between the Chief and an Astartes.
Which lead me to wonder: in an all out battle, including basic weaponry and raw strength, who would win in a fight?

The Chief has a Pistol, Assault Rifle and an Energy Sword.
The Astates has his Bolt Pistol, a Plasma Rifle and and Chainsword.

Go!
I'd say the chief, and no, not cause i'm a Bungie fanboy, lol

Despite the astartes healing abilities, they are more bulky and arent as agile as a spartan.

Their pistols are pretty much matched in power, i mean the halo pistol might as well be firing explosive bolter rounds...

Where the assault rifle isnt as deadly as the plasma rifle, it does have a faster rate of fire and with enough work, it'll get through the astartes armor...plus the plasma rifle poses a threat to the user as well, if that thing is fired too fast, boom! bye bye astartes... give the astartes a Bolter or a heavy bolter, then i'd change my mind...but for this example, it's the spartan.

The energy sword it practically a light saber, it'll slice through that chain sword in an instant. And with the spartan's superior agility, he'd have no issue's dicing up the astartes.

A better, or at least more enjoyable match-up?

Master Chief vs Ciaphas Cain (HERO OF THE IMPERIUM!)
That's a match MC can't luck his way out of; if the chief is supermaturally lucky, Ciaphas is a bloody abomination of luck-based proportions.
Quick question, as the last we saw of master chief was that he was alive and floating towards planet question mark does that mean he wins as he is technically still alive?
As wikipedia states on Ciaphas "Passing away of natural causes, he was buried with full military honours?though, due to the many false allegations of his death, there is a standing order that Cain remain listed as on active duty at all times, an order which has not been revoked even though he is documentably dead and interred"

No. They really are.

I wonder if youtube has a clip from the film to prove it...

Edit: it actually has the ENTIRE FILM [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8-ZbZrXmNs]!
Now how do I tell it to skip to 32:30 to see them leaping about like loonies...

Chief. He's actually genetically modified.
Space Marines are only elite humans.
they are talking about adeptus Astartus. the space marines of 40k. meaning that they are genetically modified to be 10 feet tall and have no fear. they also fire guns that shoot armor piercing explosive shells that would realistically be called a war crime

You really have to read to get the full scope of it.
No matter how fast chief may be, a space marine is faster. And stronger. And more resilient. And more intelligent. And... yeah.

The Chiefs primary advantage is that he's neurally linked with a sophisticated artificial intelligence and his reflexes.

I would imagine in a cluttered environment the spartan would have the edge given that he would be able to obtain better firing positions more frequently, make effective use of motion sensors and be able to "out think" an Astartes due to a complicated AI.

Whereas in an open field with limited cover, Master Chief would be overpowered through sheer brute force.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I THINK PEOPLE AREN'T CONSIDERING THE MOTION SENSOR .
In the Books most have something simliar along with vitals sign displays, Spiffy targenting software and a bunch of other gear. (their Helmets are loaded with tech)

Okay, this is actually a hard question.

I think that if it were The Master Chief against one of them, the Chief would definitely win.

He has better training. (He was trained since 12 years old to be one of the most powerful killing machines in the universe.)

He has much better mobility and reflexes.

He has a lot of experience (He demolished entire armies single-handedly.)

He doesn't rely on his armor. He was trained to fight without it.

So really, against any kind of grunt without a face, he'd win, no question.

Now a Spartan vs a Space Marine is a toss-up. Dexterity and reflexes vs strength and armor. I'd probably still go with the spartans.
Sorry, gotta correct you on a few points here...

John was trained since he was 6, not 12.

He would rely on his armor in this fight... and he prefers fighting with his armor in genaral. He feels strange without it.

He never demolished armies single handedly. He rarely, if ever, worked alone until after the fall of Reach and the Halo incident. And even then, he had some (if pitiful) backup.

Now, with all that said, as much as I love Halo and John 117, sounds like these Space Marines would win. But that's only because it sounds like the creators decided to go overboard with them to make sure they sound damn near unbeatable. It's why I don't like Warhammer 40k. Too many things are just retardedly powerful. I find it boring.

EDIT:

I just watched some of the video that was posted, and I partially take back what I said... in the books, it shows what the Spartan II's can really do, and they'd tear those guys to shreds. They're just a fucking wall. They're like Hunters. And I saw them running... a Spartan II could run circles around them.

They have the advantage of weaponry, but so do a shit load of the Covenant. And we won every ground op against the Covenant that a Spartan was in up until Reach. Oh, and if they have a problem against the Space Marine armor?

Also known as the Spartan Laser. Also known as the "Fuck You" gun. It'd tear straight through that armor.

Spartans win in a one on one. But I will admit that the Space Marines would outnumber them. There were only 33 known Spartan II's to survive the augmentation process. Way more Spartan III's, but they weren't as strong. Just easier to make.

EDIT 2:

And to any of you saying the SM's are smarter than a Spartan, read the Halo books. If that movie was any indication, you're dead wrong.

Scouts aren't space marines they are space marines in training (except in the space wolves chpapter)

Also HAVE YOU SEEN THE SPACE MARINE FLUFF?

"reasonably even" is a crazy statement; look at some of the previous posts in regards to 40k fluff the writers are just going crazy these days.

Betcher's Gland
Phase 17: Consists of two identical glands, implanted either into the lower lip, alongside the salivary glands or into the hard palette. The gland works in a similar way to the poison gland of venomous reptiles by synthesizing and storing deadly poison, which the Marines themselves are immune to due to the gland's presence. This allows a Space Marine to spit a blinding contact poison. The poison is also corrosive and can even burn away strong metals given sufficient time.

Space Marines spit acid!

Warhammer fanbois vs. Halo fanbois

I think it'd be a fair, close, fight but in the end the chief would win due to Cortana helping him out (revealing weakness in armor and junk.)
