Well escapists Obama apparently next week is going to broadcast to every school in America to talk to them about education and "how he will inspires us".

http://www.gvnews.com/articles/2009/09/03/breaking_news/00obamaschools903.txt

He will also be giving kids homework assignments and things to do while they are there. This seems innocent enough but at the same time this seems really freaking scary. So I give it to you guys what do you think?

How dare the president talk to studients about the importants of school!
I'm failing to see the problem.

PM a mod to move the thread.

Ask a moderator. I see Obama is a regular president. It's a very good contrast to Bush.

I'm PM'ing Baby Tea about it. Give it some time or PM another mod about it.

As for the speech, he once invited an 11 year old to the White House to interview him for the school newspaper. This is something similar.

I think this is pretty good, and does help show what kind of person he is. It's also good to see him targeting the speech at the people who are the most likely to be effected by his policies on education.

EDIT: Anyone else notice that Tom Horne in the article said the exact same thing three times?

EDIT2: I also like the fact that people are complaining about him controlling the economy, the environment, healthcare and now education, which are all things a president controls as part of their job.

I think it's a good move. Rather than manipulating the way in which educational value is measured like the No Child Left Behind Act, Obama would rather take steps to motivate kids to pursue their education as they choose.

well, I'm not sure which way to spin this. In one corner, it's good that he's taking an interest in your education. In the other, it's a little bit weird that he's supposedly giving out homework assignments.

i think it sounds like a good idea.

the US needs to put more emphasis on education, so this might be a step in the right direction.

From a pragmatic point of view those same kids are going to start voting soon, and creating a relationship now might very well influence their voting later on. And also the kids that stay in school and take an interest in their education are more likely to vote for more liberal candidates, so this might be a step in the right direction.

While I might not agree with the president at all times, I don't deny him his right to talk to the citizens of the nation.

I think it could be very inspirational to the students to hear from the president. This is going to be on CNN and broadcasted over the internet. If President Obama gets too political in this speech, there will be political consequences.

I have heard of school districts (my neighborhood's as well) that will be showing it the following day after administrators get a chance to look at it. I think that's over-reacting a bit too. The White House announced that they will be publishing the transcript on Monday (Labor Day).

I find it disingenuous to rally against this. I spent many a wasted school hours listening to my faculty, inspirational people, and other people I didn't care to hear from that adding one more guy doesn't seem like a big deal.

Hell, I might just listen in at work when it happens ;-)

not that I don;t applaud that action but the 11yr old was pretty damn famous in his own right. it's not like he just mailed the whitehouse and asked for an interview and got it. He had already interviewed Larry King, ummmm... and a bunch of other people whose names escape for the moment. most of them were politicians.

I dont know it just seems strange to do a national broadcast only to kids. Reminds me of Korea or a facist state or something. "Believe in your country and nothing else why is your country amazing why am I amazing how do I make you feel about being amazing" I am reminded of the last question of the goat.

Edit: Me oh my I have been looking up more articles and there is an all out war going on about this.

Edit pt2: I forgot to mention thank you for contacting a mod Zombie_fish. I think I contacted someone but I dont know if they were a mod. I was pretty sure but not 100% so sorry about that whoever you are.

it's rather simple. If your a Dem or think for yourself you will like/have no problem with the idea. If your a rep or mindless sheep you will think it's a terrible thing. Repuglicans have already sent notes and letters detailing their pure hatred towards him giving a speech.

You do know that Obama actually plays a significant role in writing his own speeches, right?

I guess we will just have to wait and see how the speech turns out. I dont know I just dont trust our government as it moves slowly socialist or into some sort of fascist dictatorship.

Sorry, people don't get my name right much and I'm a bit nitpicky of it as a result. And thank you for that. Common way to tell if they're a mod or not is how their username looks in the forums. A blue one is definately a mod, and a yellow one is a staff member but not necessarily a mod. There's a complete list of mods in the posting guidelines [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.116827] as well as what part they play.

The article says it will be shown through the White House website so we may be able to view it from there. If so, I may just have a watch and see what comes from it.
