So I just played through the original Splinter Cell, SC Pandora Tomorrow, Chaos Theory and Double Agent. Man those games were great. Far superior to conviction if one doesn't consider the outdated graphics. Excellent stealth games that consumes quite a lot of time if played through hard.

Anyone who could mention some games that are very much like the original Splinter Cell if one enjoys stealth?

ahh.. now you've made me want to whip out the ol' xbox and fire up splinter cell...

OT: I've heard great things about the Thief games but never played them myself, probably horrible graphics though

I thought conviction was too violent for a splinter cell game.. Go hide in a corner and shoot anything that looks at you funny.. That's not splinter cellish.

Try the original AssCreed, the Thief series or the original Deus Ex (not part 2).

The yet-to-be-released-but-partially-leaked Deus Ex: Human Revolution allows some sweet sneaking action.

Just play some more Ubisoft games, the ones that have stealth are usually pretty good at least IMO.

Yes they are very good stealth games but unfortunately they aren't any more than that.

The games I have found have always been too narrowly focused to stealth-ing around.

Metal Gear Solid series did better because although entirely stealth focused it still had the gameplay mixed up a lot with forced confrontation, disguise-as-enemy sections, boss fights, chases, pursuits, etc.

I think the latest game Conviction mixes this up enough to save the series but I don't think quite enough.

Some of us want the stealth because it's more gratifying than kicking a door down and spraying everything with bullets, y'know.

OT: Pick up the Thief series, like everyone else said. MGS is way too long, and by the time you get to MGS:4 it utterly murders stealh. Plus you have to endure the story ._.

Oh I like it too, but just not without some variety along the way.

Shooter games also have to mix things up with new gameplay styles, but there aren't many different styles of stealth. Wait, actually there is! Disguise is a major one not used.

I find Hitman is a much better representation, it has stealth and disguises in dynamic relationship. And varying dynamic goals. Splinter cell was just a tad too repetitive with the whole darkness and light thing.

MGS4 I agree has utterly broken stealth mechanics. The guns are too effective and AI too dense, but worse I think is the octocamo that makes you effectively invisible ANYWHERE with zero effort. MGS3 had a better compromise, you could hide in plain sight only if you had the right camo on that you had to WORK for to find/win.

I would only recommend 2 of the 4 MGS games, MGS1 and 3.
