If Ive noticed one thing as a gamer, its that there are games that are hated just for the fact that they are popular. It seems to me that being a popular game is a double edged sword. Im not saying that this is a bad thing, because I am a culprit of this (Halo 3). It just seems to me that if you make a game with a lot of success, people will hate it because of that success, not because they didnt enjoy the game.

So Im here to ask you, Escapist, what games do you think are hated today most because of their success? My votes would have to go for Halo and WoW. I know a lot of people who hate them and have never even tried them. They just hate them because they are popular games. Im not saying its fair, but it happens. A lot.

I don't really hate Halo for it success, I played the game and found it to be average. The only reason I hate it is because I expected it to be the best game ever by the amount of fanboyism, but I ended up spending $150 on a game I only "kinda like".

WoW indeed. I doubt many of the haters have actually played it, they just hate it because it's very popular and they see the stereotype of a lifeless nerd playing it in his basement 24/7.

I usually only reserve hatred for games after having played them for at least an hour. Usually 2-3 hours. I don't see how popularity comes into play here, either a game is good or it isn't.

Super Smash Brothers Brawl, without a doubt.
Most people I know that dislike the game actually own it. They still play Melee now.

I must agree with Dayne here. All in all, Halo is a game worth its money, but some people are promoting it wayyyy too much.

My answer is Final Fantasy. Which one? All of them.

Oh, and Metal Gear solid(s).

I don't really hate games, there are only the ones I'm interested in and the ones I'm not. Luckily I didn't make completely poor choices. I'd never play any racing or sports game, but if people like it, they should knock themselves out.

Haters only waste their time. And a discussion gets very unobjective along the way.

I honestly can't say I hate any of the things that have been mentioned so far, even if I don't particularly like them much. WoW as a game is fine, it's just not anything like a game I would actually want to play, let alone pay for in perpetuity.

Also, how do you spend $150 on a single game?
That was probably factoring the cost of the X-Box into the price.

I can say I dislike Halo for its popularity because of all the raving fanboys trying harder and harder to shove Halo down my throat. It was alright, but not worth my 50$, now stop trying to get me to look at your screenshots!!

WoW, a million times over. I can list several things that are annoying about it, but it's a very solid and easy to play MMO with tons of content. Most of the arguments I hear about it could be attributed to any mmo ever made. It is hated mainly for its popularity and the MMO player stereotype, as well as personaldislikes assoiciated with friends or themselves not budgeting their time very well.

Final Fantasy's another one that comes to mind. In general they're all very well done rpgs with decent storylines. Many arguments against it stem from dislike of the fans coupled with a dislike of the japanese culture elements placed within the game.

Also, I very much doubt many of you have had a franchise "shoved down your throat." The term "I'm tired of hearing about it." might be more apt.

Note, I can understand disliking either franchise, but hating it's a bit silly as in general both are solid but don't escape the norms of their genre.

I was a person who hated Halo, because I played it and just felt bored compared to the other games I was playing that night (RSV2, COD 2 & 4). Though I actually do like it now since I ended up buying it for 5 bucks from a guy in a parking lot.

On-Topic: Halo, Call Of Duty, GTA, Final Fantasy

Legendary Edition (If that's what it's called). Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition is $150, too.

Since when is quality directly linked to sales figures? You can get high sales through marketing and advertising (see Nintendo)...doesn't mean the game is objectively great.

Talking to most people, your correct, they dont have it shoved down their throats. But when I said "raving fanboys" Im speaking of a lot of my friends... Who constantly tell me to get Halo and give it another chance. "Its not a bad game! I dunno why you dont like it! Cmon man!" Im teased about not liking Halo by my fanboy friends around 3 to 4 times a week. That may be a factor in my hate towards it, now that i think about it...

Didn't really like Halo3. I always do th Single-Multi player, and I found the singlepl;ayer of Halo 3 to be lacking.

Another one, BattleField 2. I like the little training bit in single player. In multi player, I got kicked for blowing up a jet that an enemy was in by using C4.

Personally I don't really give a damn. If the game is fun I play it. Infat the reason I origionally bought an xbox 360 is because Halo 3 was being released. Having played the first two at friends houses and loving them, I needed to have the third for myself. As for other games...like I said I'll play it if it's fun, or in WoW's case, I'd play it if there were online fees.
