I was sitting here thinking how I enjoy squad games. Abomination, Space Hulk, UFO games come to mind.

Anyone got any games that involve squad based combat, preferably with experience gain and/or tactical gameplay, to suggest?

Well this is sure a coincidence I was just watching a Gears 2 video when I spotted this. Needless to say I recommend Gears or if you can wait a few months Gears 2.

I've played a bit gears of war. I thought it was decent, tho didn't play it very much. My interest kinda got killed when my friend said "you don't need guns, just run up to them and chainsaw the baddies, much better". Or is my friend just stupid?

Nah a shotgun > chainsaw.

Star Wars: Republic Commando is a great squad based fps game, really fun, played through it a couple of times, the controls and AI are really solid, great fun each time :D

Well, that'll work 'till a certain extent... getting hit once whilst your chainsaw is revved up, leaves you incredibly vulnerable, though

Anyhoo, I'd recommend Brothers in Arms over GeOW, since you can still be a one-man-army in GeOW (but that's just the case in most shooter games anyway), and in BiA you need to look at your surroundings, look at the positions of the Germans (and where they might maneuver if you decide to go to a certain spot), then act fast, and adapt if the opponent changes tactics too. Also, it's a lot more realistic, since you don't kill off 100+ germans per level.

Oh man! Here I go again! Once more, the universal game for everything, "Brothers in Arms". Absolutely demands squad tactics and presents them well. Very tactical (unless on "easy" or "normal") and with a reasonable difficulty curve. You are in charge of a squad consisting of, well, you and then a fire team and an assault team (they usually consist or 3 or 4 men). You can tell them what to do and where to go. Basic tactics include using the fire team to suppress the enemy and using the assault team to get a good flank on them while they're busy. The game requires thinking situations through, assessing options, and making those cliche "tough decisions". Out now are "The Road to Hill 30" for original xbox and maybe ps2, "Earned in Blood" for xbox, ps2, and PC, and coming in August, "Hell's Highway" for xbox 360 and PC.
If you're into squad-based games, you have probably already heard of these and I'm just spouting needless, annoying information. If you haven't heard of them I would strongly suggest the purchase of these gems. They do not disappoint. I have the two that are currently out and I'd say they are the best WWII shooters ever made. But what's my opinion to you? You'll have to see for your self.

Oops! I guess you posted this whilst I was typing mine, old chap! Sorry about the redundancy! Anywho, there's your second opinion, Udyrfrykte!

I'm an ass. That was supposed to be a quote up there. I think I'll go cry myself to sleep.

No worries, we all fail at life at some point... :D

Thanks for the advices so far. Gonna get my hands on BiA, sounds promising.

And I've already played Star Wars: Republic Commando. Great game (until it crashed at some level and my savegames didn't work anymore)

Star Wolves...Sci-fi Space Battles, nice Story and RPG style leveling of your Crew.
You can even assign them Ships and equip these fitted for the purpose and/or the pilots skills (giving a ship full of light automatic cannons to a Sniper would defeat its purpose)

Or Star Wolves 2...but i reccoment the RealSW2 mod, which is sadly only german, but the game without it is totally buggy (its just less buggy with the mod) but you can fly HUGE Spacecrafts in it...

If you haven't already got it, I highly recommend Rainbow Six Vegas. R6V2 is also pretty good, and unlike R6V the multiplayer levelling up system is also available in the single player, which unlocks new weapons and gear for your avatar.

Armed Assault - you can usually pick it up with all of the expansions for around £10, but IMHO are the best military squad based FPS of all time (check out Operation Flashpoint, its predecessor, too).

The graphics are not up to much, but the depth of the rest of the game is mindboggling. Most western armies currently use the game engine used in these games to train their troops.

Basically, if want to be Rambo, don't play this game. If you want a game that gives you realism (not this wishy washy CoD4 fake realism) and immense freedom, then get this game.

I know it has to be recomended some time, but Metal Gear Online is actually a pretty tactile shooter.

You usually have to stay in groups, request for backup via Codec messages, and basically go in as a team.

There may be some GLARING flaws (WAY to easy to get Headshots, collison detection fucked up) and sometimes it isn't always tactical, but most of the time it really feels like something you have to work together to win.

BiA, GRAW and R6V are good tactical shooters. I can't think of anything to add to that.

Hidden And Dangerous and the imaginatively titled sequel, Hidden And Dangerous 2. I'm sure I read somewhere that the original H&D is now free, but it was kind of buggy, worth checking out though. H&D2 is an awesome game and can be found on budget these days. Squad based WW2 shooter - warning, it requires an awful lot of planning and thought, and is harder than a diamond encrusted nail.

Except from that the AI is retarded, and most of the game you run around talking anyways. No thank you :)
