I'm with the crowd that thinks that the last good FF game was FFX, and that menu driven combat is part of what made the series great. In FF12 they ditched it completely in favor of a wonky semi-automated system together with some of the dullest characters the series have ever had, and in FF13 they might've gone back to the old system again (sort of, kinda..) but instead forgot to implement player freedom.
FF12 was menu driven with an optional automated system.
Between that and your description of the characters I feel like you didn't play it.
But to each their own.
To each their own, indeed. I don't usually "defend" myself in forums, but you seem civil enough and FF is a subject I love talking about
.
I played FF12 about halfway through, and then gave up. Up until that point, I had tried to convince myself that it was fun, that it was still FF and that it had at least some merits that made it worth playing.
It was kind of like playing Duke Nukem forever back when it was new and people hadn't yet completely started railing on it... except that people never really did start railing on FF12. In fact, I got the impression that both critics and players liked it, which only puzzled me even more.
The constant stealing from foes to get money, to the complete and utter blandness of the protagonist Vahn, to the lackluster combat and environments... it all just added up to, in my opinion, the worst entry in the series. Even FF13 was better (which I actually played through til the end, mostly because I wanted to complete it for completions sake).
(Just as an aside note, my favourite in the series was FF9. Love it to bits, and have played it through several times. FF7 and 10 are close seconds)
