Who has actually criticised the trailer for having a black stormtrooper? Citation desperately needed.
It was quite hard to miss unless you somehow weren't paying attention or reading the comments when the trailer first went up.
Guilty as charged. I don't read youtube comments because I consider banging my head against a door to be a better way to kill brain cells.

As a general rule when it comes to common knowledge there is no real need for a citation.
What exactly is common knowledge in this situation? That a black stormtrooper should offend some people?

This is also the kind of situation where I tell people to do their own research, since if you want to find it, it's not all that hard to do.
I'm not typing 'why do people hate black stormtroopers' into google, especially with the new metadata retention laws they just introduced in Australia.

The guy also might not be a Storm Trooper and simply wearing the armor.
Of course, but don't let Occam's Razor get in the way of a good internet lynch mob.

Okay, it's an analogy for X-supremacy and racism under a fascist government, why can't the empire use only black soldiers? Does it HAVE to be white-supremacy all the time? Get creative ffs.

Also, just to point out to the people that say the stormtroopers should be white due to Nazi parallels...they are clones of this guy. Who is not white.
Yeah, but he's not black. That's the important part. >.>

People were making a fuss about this? o0

Wtf..So much for living in the 21st century.

And regarding the stormtroopers all come from the same cloned source, that hasn't been true since the kamino rebellion during the early stages of the Empire, the old fashioned Fett clones are ageing by this point and an extreme minority, most stormtroopers are clones from inferior sources or standard human recruits.

Heck even if you discount Battlefront 2 (which is still relevant to the cannon last I checked), in that new series "Rebels" (which for the record I dislike), they show you clearly that stormtrooper cadets/recruits are NOT clones, and there was even a black recruit amongst them!

So there is 0 lore conflict with having a black stormtrooper. Heck the Empire is more into xenophobia vs non humans then anything to do with human ethnicity last I checked, never had it been hinted they were white supremacists but HUMAN supremacists.

"Nazi Analogy" I always found the Empire more analogous to colonial Britain (what you think it's a coincedence all the higher ups were played by British actors?).

Which give Boyega is British... well... it's a perfect fit.

Hell I wouldn't even say the Empire is about any kind of supremacy, they are more like Mussolini than the Nazi's, the Empire is about keeping the Cargo shuttles running on time whatever the cost as opposed to any outright supremacy. If a few people end up as slaves or such, it's a small price to pay for the orderly running of the universe and the Death Stars first target being Alderaan a majority human populated world, kind of demonstrates and supports that.

Not all Stormtroopers are clones anyway, even if EU isn't canon anymore, Star Wars Rebels is and it has non-clone stormtroopers.

Given that we regularly saw Stormtroopers of different heights and with different voices in the original trilogy it seems pretty obvious they were either not all clones or no longer all clones of the same guy.
This. I'd imagine that during the formation years of the empire, there would be a few people who figured that being a stormtrooper would be cool, if only for the fact you no longer have to worry about stormstroopers showing up and killing the shit out of you.

Judging from their aiming skills, they seem like they'll take anyone :p

Wait so being confused about a Stormtrooper not being a Jango Fett clone makes you racist now?

I freely admit to not be familiar with most of Star Wars lore - my personal experience is limited to the films (as in episodes one through six, not the animated ones) and Knights of the Old Republic. Don't recall anything mentioned in those about Stormtroopers being not clones, so I assumed they either weren't clones anymore or some random guy was just dressed up as a Stormtrooper like Han and Luke were.

Really don't see the point of everyone getting up in arms about this, but the idea that it instantly equates to racial hatred is just silly.

Critics of Boyega base their argument on the fact that the Empire is meant to be an analogy for Hitler, the Nazis, and the "Master Race," and thus having a black actor portray a Stormtrooper undermines that analogy.
Wait, wait, wait... people are actually, seriously complaining that there aren't enough NAZIS in this Sci-Fantasy SPACE OPERA?!?!

Look, if by any chance any of you people are reading this, please, just take good, long look in a mirror and contemplate your desire to see more Nazis. In a film about space wizards with laser swords. And if you ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO HAVE more Nazis in such a context, I hear Iron Sky 2 is coming soon, so why don't you go watch that and leave the black stormtrooper alone?

My only thought was that the way he popped in plus his expression were rather silly and made the trailer look more like a parody than the real thing.

Stormtroopers are all clones of same genetic code mass produced to be a cheap military force. That would also explain why they are all such a horrible shots, the original source probably was.

I got no problem with stormtroopers looking however the hell they want (well except perhaps fat because using a fat person as cloning base for military personnel is just stupid), as long as they are consistent with the "all clones" fact.

From what i read they were clones to start with and then over time they had to hire people for the army. In the original trilogy all the troopers were different sizes. So now, im guess SW7 happened 30 years after SW6 (just going by age of actors) so their is normal conscription.

That wasn't racism. Elba playing Heimdall was changes to an established character, as well as one that is described as "whitest of the gods". I'd be equally annoyed had they picked a white guy to play Blade. I wasn't particuarly happy with them changing Bane in Dark Knight Rises to be "british" either, he's supposed to be carribian/Spanish. I like Elba as an actor, I just don't think it was necessary to change Heimdalls racial appearance.

I wouldn't even say this was racism, just misconception. Given a lot of people are under the impression that all the Storm Troopers are still clones of Jango Fett, saying "wtf Black Storm Trooper?" makes sense. That's not racism, that's questioning something you have been told and believe to be true.

Of course they're not all clones of Fett anymore as the Empire was recruiting Stormtroopers in the oiginal trilogy and I'm pretty sure they didn't retcon that out. And at this point, most of them are dead anyway.

However, I've yet to see any questioning of a black stormtrooper, save one person, who did it on the basis that they thought all Stormtroopers were still Fett clones.Personally I thought it was pretty obvious he was in disguise in the trailer, or he'd just signed up to fight for the Empire and was freaking out. The only discussion I've seen is that stupid Lightsaber.

OT: People have been treating the Empire as an analogy to Nazi Germany or America or whatever.
It is. Against aliens. This black dude is just another human, the Empire is not concerned with skin colour, it's concerned with species. For instance, the fact that Thrawn, not even a full-fledged alien but a near-human. got himself so high up in the Imperial Navy was highly irregular.

So yeah, any comment against this dude's skin colour is nonsense. Except if that skin colour was blue or something.

The fact that people are still getting pissy about races other than white being in film makes me want to pistol whip humanity until it stops being stupid. Plus, when you get down to it, basically EVERY fascist regime has been a bit hypocritical about the race issue; some claim they want superiority of their race...but then they realize how logistically difficult that is and thus MUST work alongside other races. Heck, the original trilogy showed this; despite the Empire being comprised of humans they weren't above hiring non-human bounty hunters to track down Han. Of course the excuse they would make is that the ends justify the means, but that's the point: being racist doesn't work in the modern world because if it did you wouldn't need to hire non-human bounty hunters in the first place.
