I get the outcry for more diversity in films and gaming. People want to feel represented in their favorite forms of media and that is understandable, especially in video games. However when it comes to LBGT characters and the urge toward them, I really feel like that sort of thing is completely unnecessary in most situations. You see what ends up happening, especially in film, is that the LBGT is overblown about their sexuality to make sure the audience can instantly know that they are there. This makes the character not only feel like a fucking cartoon but also frankly insults the LBGT crowd it is trying to appeal too.
What happened to people caring about characters based on their actions or responses to the situations they are thrown into by the plot. Would people have liked Han Solo any more if he was gay? What if instead of smoothing Lela at the end of whichever movie that was, (A new hope right?) he instead grabbed Luke or Chewwie for a big Gay tongue bath? Would that have made his personality or his motivations for everything else he did in the film mean more?
The answer is no, unless you're a moron.
So the fact that movie and game publishers have to announce, "Hey we have Gay people in our shit (wait that came out wrong, err so did that....hold on.)
So the fact that movie and game publishers have to announce that their produce does in fact have LBGT characters somewhere in the plot, is simply a cash grab to try and appeal to an group of people who really shouldn't give a shit....unless it's porn, then I suppose you could care who fucks who with what.
That isn't to say that having a LBGT character cant be done tastefully, or even correctly. Bioware has gotten this down with the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series. You can romance who ever you want with whatever character you have created. Personally I make a fat Commander Shepard for twistedly hideous that when I seduce that hot blue girls I can watch and go, "eewww I can't believe you did that to my ugly ass." I digress, those games allow the player to make the sexual preference choice which gives meaning to how that player feels like they are being represented, simply because they are representing themselves through their choices.
Throwing a random LBGT character into a film is like Robert Downy Jr. in Tropic Thunder proclaiming to have a black guy in the film. Unless it actually matters to the plot, skin color and sexual debauchery should not mean anything.
That being said I have to worry about this upcoming Star Wars film. The studio has acted like this is the biggest announcement about the movie they could have made. "We have LBGT people and blacks! Come see our movie please." I having a feeling that people are going to shit all over this movie.
