Praetor Star Battlecruiser Reckoning, Bilbringi Shipyards, Two Weeks since the Battle of Coruscant
Grand Admiral Thrawn stared out the transparisteel windows of the massive battleship, observing the activity of the shipyards set out in front of him. The
Reckoning had arrived at Bilbringi several days earlier, awaiting the refitting program to bring the older Imperial vessels up to the modern standards he needed the fleet to function at. The Praetor was a relic of the Clone Wars, a long, pointless and drawn out conflict that only served as an example of how not to run a war. Actions needed to be swift and decisive. Thrawn would not make the mistakes of the Republic.
His comlink chimed. It was Captain Pellaeon, commanding the
Reckoning's escort ships from the Star Destroyer Chimera. "Admiral, the VIPs you requested have arrived. I've sent them to the conference chamber to wait for your arrival. Requesting permission to run a secondary scan on their vessels in case we missed anything."
"Understood, thank you Captain. You may proceed with your review. Thrawn out." He pocketed his comlink and strode towards the
Reckoning's conference chamber. He was greeted by a large collection of mercenary types, as well as a cadre of Imperial officers. One fellow, a young man with a clean shaven face and bright green eyes, stood out from the rest. Del Karcot had proven to be an invaluable asset even before the first attack had come two weeks earlier. His tactical understanding of the Republic's defenses would prove invaluable in the months to come.
Of the several hired guns, few truly stood out. One exception was an oddly dressed Khommite. It was all in the way he carried himself. Posture was one of the easiest ways to gain an impression of a person. He looked with disdain at many of the other figures milling around him. He did however, give an approving nod to one character, set apart from the rest. Thrawn had heard of Subject 37's notoriety, but he had yet to see any impression of it. Perhaps the Clawdite really was that good at concealing his personality.
As Thrawn seated himself at the head of the table, the room settled down to listen. The Red eyed Chiss smiled, but there was no warmth to it. "Welcome, gentlemen. I trust that you are willing to hear my proposal.
"As you know, the war has begun anew. This means there is ample opportunity for employment in your personal fields of work. I am more than willing to oblige you with such an offer. This war cannot be won merely through military means. A single ship lost can make the difference between victory and defeat. If that can be avoided, I will use my power to see that it is."
A pale skinned Umbaran snorted under his pressurized suit. "And what does that have to do with us? We're mercs, not crewmen. Cut to the chase, Admiral."
Thrawn looked impassive, and continued. "Imagine this scenario: A planet is willing to accept Imperial Rule, yet it is currently occupied by the New Republic. It is defended by a planetary shield generator, and several planetary turbolasers. As a response to their loyalty, the Empire sends a fleet to relinquish control from the oppressors, and liberate Imperial subjects. During this battle, thirteen cruisers are lost as a means to driving the Republic from orbit. The Empire remains victorious, but the loss is higher than anticipated."
The Umbaran frowned behind his face mask. "So?"
"Take a second option. This time, ahead of the fleet, a team of operatives infiltrates the planet, and takes control of one of the Shield Generators, or sabotages a turbolaser. Suddenly, when the attack arrives, the Republic is faced with two fronts, instead of one. A cornered beast fights twice as hard, but offering an escape route when faced with overwhelming odds coming from a two pronged attack, it is always wiser to flee. Both sides in this conflict are short on supplies. The New Republic would not risk losing a fleet when they can help it. And so, the planet is again liberated, this time with minimal losses, and the eternal gratitude of the locals for the brave souls who fought for the undercover missions."
"So you're expecting to pay us with gratitude for black ops missions?" said the Umbaran skeptically.
"Certainly not. I expect to pay you with Credits. Several magnitudes of credits. With down payments up front to ensure your cooperation. I do not deny that these missions are extremely dangerous, but I assure you, my clients are payed on time. You may leave whenever you wish, but the offer stands. Think about it gentlemen. The door is there."
Several of the hunters turned to each other to discuss the proposal. Some of them left, escorted by the security officers. Soon, only a handful of the mercenaries and the officer cadre remained.
"I will see to arranging your first mission immediately." said Thrawn. He turned to the officers for a moment. "Now excuse me, I have one thing to discuss privately for a moment."
Thrawn ushered Del Karcot away from the others. The young Commodore maintained his air of professionalism even alone. Thrawn had great plans for him.
"I understand pulling you away from the Outer Rim at such a critical moment is difficult, Commodore. However, I also know that people work best when they are put in positions where their talents shine through the most. You are at your best on the border, but you will need more ships for the task I have set for you. I need officers like you to command the battle groups striking against the New Republic. Because of this, I had you reassigned to Battle Group Avenger. You will take command of the
Avenger immediately. Is that understood?"

Ilum, Jedi Temple, Sith Ascendants' Base of Operations
Ryn'Talos
Ryn'Talos sat floating in the temple's meditation chamber. Here, he could feel true clarity rippling through his skin. In such a state, he could see beyond the stars. He could stare into souls, into the dark eddies beneath the surface of one's mind. He could pry them open, uncover their secrets, and learn how to push them to their true potential, if it so benefited the Ascendants.
The Outer Rim was awash with an orgy of blood and chaos. The carefully orchestrated uprisings and subterfuge had carved a significant portion of the Rim into new staging areas for the Sith. Things were going far better than he hoped. While the New Republic clashed with the Imperial Remnant, the Ascendants had gathered strength in the shadows, suddenly surprising everyone with their appearance. Only a select few interlopers had discovered their secrets, and by the time they had, it had already been far too late. They would be dealt with in time.
Ryn'Talos's skin twitched. Followers were coming. A grin crept at the corners of his mouth. And his queen. Pana. She was pure ambition, and she wore it like a badge of honor. She didn't seem to care that her emotions were clear. It had been obvious from the beginning that she intended to use his teachings to surpass him eventually. But that day was not any time soon. Until such a time, they worked towards a mutual goal.
Two others were with her, familiars he had encountered during his travels before meeting his Queen. They were diametric opposites in their personalities. Grissk was raw power, the tip of a spear that would drive into the heart of the Ascendants' enemies. Drokath was calm and understanding. Such a forgiving personality made him utterly lethal as an assassin. He would serve the Ascendants well in the act of sabotage and murder.
"You have come to me students," Ryn said as the trio entered the room and knelt before him. "You seek clarity, a new task perhaps? I will give you one each. Achieve these goals by any means necessary. I merely provide you the end result. The actions are yours to choose."
"Pana, my Queen. You showed mercy to those that I would have you destroy. It is obvious that you are not yet ready to face your old comrades. Was it out of friendship, or some misguided pity that you allowed them to flee? It is of no matter, you still have a role to play in this war. Take the
Liberator and the 1st Clone Legion to Mon Calamari. I have sensed that a coming battle shall take place there. This temple is the means to our faith, Kamino is the means to our armies. Mon Calamari shall be the means to our fleets. Take the world from both the Republic and Empire. Strike when both are weak, and show no mercy."
"Grissk, to this end, you will accompany Pana. While she leads the assault from the
Liberator, you will take command of the ground forces and attack the floating cities. Do whatever you can to crush the opposition. Your strength and tenacity make you individually suited for this role. Commander Coric shall be your secondary officer. Though a clone, heed his council."
"Drokath, you shall do what Pana could not. Find, and kill the Jedi Xyras Varik, and his apprentice, Hann Polien. They, alongside that reprehensible Rugal Bernstein, were the ones responsible for us showing ourselves publicly. They have caused too many problems, and they have become a liability. Infiltrate their group, become their "friend". Eliminate them."
