I can't really speak for the fans, but I certainly don't have that mindset. I'd expect TF3 to be just a fresh as TF2, Men of War 2 to take Men of War to entirely new levels, Starwars Battlefront 3 (let's all take a moment to mourn Pandemic) to not just be SW:BF2 with better graphics and a few new doodads. I guess thats just me, but I agree that Blizzard at least thinks that fans are like that, and wants to make money.
Team Fortress was a mod for Quake. The version made for Half-Life (the first version most played it would seem) was a port with
fewer options and do-dads. TF2, the third crack at the game in spite of the name, actually saw some changes but much of the core experience remained unchanged. StarWars Battlefront 2 was nothing more than the first with extra do-dads, and was itself little more than a StarWars themed Battlefield knock-off.
The problem here is not that I don't agree with your basic argument. In spite of liking StarCraft II on it's own merit without the interference of nostalgia, I can assert that it is not the sort of game I prefer. The problem is that what you, a person who is clearly not a fan and supporter, expect and what the actual fans want are entirely different animals.
Also, for a better example that supports your argument, I'd look at the jump from Dawn of War to Dawn of War II. The game actually changed dramatically and only kept the most fundamental trappings and concepts from the previous entry.
