THIS. I have type II Bipolar disorder. Bipolar depression. I don't get crazy, tear-your-face-off manic episodes. my downs aren't "I HATE EVERYTHING and I'm going to weep and jump off a cliff now!" I go long periods of time feeling literally nothing at all, to short, super-creative bursts. FFFFFF I hate bipolar stereotypes. I hate people finding out, since they tend to avoid me afterward, or treat me like I'm about to explode with the slightest provocation.

I think we were talking about different things. When i said bipolar stereotypes, then i indeed meant it literarily: Stereotypes that are based on dualistic polarities. This does not mean that i necessarily disagree with what you wrote - just that my post was talking about something else than your post.

I've gotten the stupid American crap for the past two semesters since I got lumped into the foreign dorm. The Japanese and French kids should really stop assuming that I cannot understand them. *rolls eyes*

Then there's the: "She works out in only a sports bra! What an attention whore/slut!" I actually PASS OUT if I work out with a shirt on. My body heats up too fast, I get dizzy, and I'm down for the count.

This one is probably the most annoying: "She's a girl, she can't play video games!" I am not the best player, but I've beaten my fair share of games. It usually just takes me much longer than most 'hardcore' gamers. However, that's not because I'm a girl, that's just how I like to do things.

Well I often get a shifty glance from older people and they tend to avoid me (once a person actually crossed the road to avoid me). It's either because I'm a teenager, because I wear mostly black or both. I'm actually a really shy person and compared to some others I know I'm a saint.

I work with computers as my job, so naturally family and friends assume that I can and will fix their random electronic device... more often that not for free too ¬_¬. Not so much of a stereotype as it it an assumption.

Also having long-ish hair stuck me in the emo camp at secondary school. Not a fun camp especially when there were no emos there anyway...

That's the complete opposite of my reasoning... usually when the thought, "She's pretty." or " She's too nice." crosses my mind it's usually followed up by, "She's too good for me..."

Out of curiosity, how much of that do you get on this site? A fair bit would be my guess, but considering you're kinda-sorta-new here, you might have lucked out so far.


As for me... quite a few. The Japanese stereotypes, for instance, complete with people spontaneously bombarding me with broken Japanese. These stereotypes would be completely wrong in many cases anyway, and I'm not even Japanese. I just live here.

Then you get all the teenager stereotype. Meaning that I'm lazy, constantly angry, refuses to listen to any metal lighter than lead, replace commas with the profanity of my choice and so on. That never gets old.

Or for people who know me better, my being a pacifist and never being angry/hating anything means that I'm often seen as a pushover. This is, sadly, far truer than I would like.

Then you get people who assume that my reading books and having a liking for classical music means I think I'm somehow "better than anyone else". I don't. Quite the opposite, really.

Also, my being Israeli and Jewish apparently means I want to oppress the entire world by means of blowing things up. Honestly, I don't know where people get this idea. I can't afford explosives on my kind of income.

Generally speaking, I get annoyed by this when it comes up, then feel bad about doing so. Honestly, though, I've got more flaws than I know what to do with. Why do people need to come up with the few I don't have?



Edit: To end this on a positive note, a stereotype I do enjoy. Well, a very select part of the British stereotype, anyway. By which I mean that I got myself a top hat and made a monocle, since it amuses me far more than it should.

The typical geek girl: No, I don't like JRPGs and I don't want special attention for having breasts. Get over the fact that there are geek girls and women - I have.

The art student: I'm not super artsy and dress in all colours of the rainbow spectrum and love to listen to indie and all that crap. Lower you expectations, not everyone that studies art is like that(and I don't know how you figured they should be).

Emo: Oh, christ, alright, I love the colour black and gray is very nice too, I fucking hate pink and don't cut myself though. Nor do I listen to really shitty music where all they do is scream and/or whine about how much their lives suck(even though they're immensely popular and make tons of cash, but whatever).

Stereotypes in general, really. I don't like categorising, although, I realise we as humans do it automatically to handle information and such, but I still think you should realise that's all there is to it.
