When I first heard about the Wii, I was excited that I would be able to have proper sword fights against enemies in games like Zelda, and was very disappointed when I finally played Twilight Princess and all you have to do is waggle the controller around. I haven't used Motion+ yet but I have heard you can still get away with waggling.

I hope that this Wand Sony is making turns out good, the tech demo they showed at E3 looked promising enough, seeing as they did have a sword demonstration.
Yeah, see. Thats the difference between the two technologies. One just tells the console "i'm moving left". And one is... well as you can see from the demo. A real 1:1 representation of the wands orientation and motion.

I had the same problem you did. I was so excited for the wii. REAL SWORD FIGHTS!!!! But the wii's technology just isn't made for that sort of thing. This is. And i can't wait to see if any developers use it right.

Everything looks awesome before it comes out. People were probably saying the same things about the Wii remote before it was released.
Nobody mentioned 1:1 for the Wii!

I'm actually going to consider buying a PS3 for this!

...but seriously it does look alright and I'm sure it could be quite fun if they implemented it into some decent games.

Nobody mentioned it, but it was probably the first thing anyone thought of when the concept of the Wii was pitched to the public. Just saying, I've yet to see motion controls done really well. No reason to expect this new gadget to be any better than the others. And if it is, you can bet Sony will charge an arm and a leg AND you won't be able to find a copy anywhere because Sony won't manufacture enough to meet demand.

Sony hates customers.

Yeah, of course tech demos look great, but extrapolate that into real world life and people, I know I won't want to have to buy 2 Gems and be all over my living room to play.

The very nature of motion control tends to shorter gaming experiences due to physical limitations, just wait until you can't play cause your arms have collapsed from strain.

Have you watched the tech demo? Watch it, then imagine if Bethesda makes Elder Scrolls 5 with that as a basis. real time sword fighting, real time archery, and magic calygraphy. Its got potential. People just need to realize its not a piece of shit waggle wand like the wii mote.
Oddly enough, weren't those the same things surrounding the wiimote and Twilight Princess?

I wouldn't get your hopes up too much, Kid.

2 things for the OP:

Have you played Wii sports resourt? if no, check it, no arm flailing mindlessly, but 1:1 motion controllers.

2nd: Sony's wand is strigh up copy of nintendo wiimote (with motion plus) and natal. Its not original and we are only able to say its better then any of it's competitor when it comes out, but i stick to my ground that its a shameless copy dressed up as something inovative.

And by the way, as you said, its a tech demo, there's more freedom of movement that in a regular game (wsr was also a tech demo for motion+), otherwise there would be countless glitches and errors to be made by an unforseen movement. I have the motion plus and i guarantee it's 1:1 with no wickups in either PGA tour 10 or WSR, the only M+ games i have so far.
As you said on your post, you should have looked into it a bit closer.

Technology advances though. 2010 is not the same as 2006, when the Wii was released. This is an actual etch demo showing actual 1:1 motion controls. Unless they're pulling a Molyneux, this should turn out okay as long as they implement what they've shown here (and it doesn't cost a gillion dollars).

The advantage they have is that they've experienced motion controls with the Wii. They can now understand better what gamers want in terms of arm-flailing and learn from the Wii's mistakes. People keep saying that using a controller is the best gaming method evar, but it wasn't always this perfect: look at early console controllers, like the Intellivision's, or Atari 7800's, or even earlier ones... these things can and will evolve naturally and in my opinion, most people that do nothing but complain are just suffering from a bad case of "you changed it now it sucks".

EDIT: I forgot to mention earlier that I do see a downside to the sword-and-shield thing that was going on in the tech demo. The position the character was in was just awkward. I hope game developers will do something about it, because I don't want to play a game where my character moves like a zombie with severe back pain.

You discard too many of the comments as problems that the writers have exclusively with the Wii. Personally, even if it works perfectly as a 1:1 motion sensing controller I am still not interested.

I am not even mildly interested in the concept of even slightly acting out the motions I want my character to perform. Uncharted 2 and Darksiders being my most recent purchases, I will use them as examples. Uncharted is absolutely filled with climbing mechanics, am I going to have to mime climbing on my couch every time I want to pull myself up a 4 foot wall? Same goes with Darksiders. It's action is slow-paced relative to other games in the hack & slash genre, but there is still a whole lot of sword-swinging. Is anyone here really interested in swinging their arm for each individual sword strike in a game like Darksiders, or worse yet God of War?

I'm sorry, but if I can't play TES V because I suck at pantomiming archery, then you can shove the fucking wand up your ass. Leave the motion controls out of serious games. I don't want to keep dying because I haven't been properly trained in sword combat.

Here's a hint... most gamers aren't good at golf, archery, sword fighting, darts, tennis, or any of the other myriad of things motion control has been used for. People play games for fun, for escapism... this is why guitar hero and the like are so popular, because you don't need to be able to play guitar to play the game... if you try to reverse this principal you're just going to have a big pile of fail in your lap.
