I know as a fact that many escapists choose metal to be their favourite genre, but I know many people prefer the faster, more violent style to stoner. Now for all intents and purposes I'll classify stoner to covering doom, maybe sludge and drone metal as well.

I'm just looking for some people's thoughts on it, it's a really underground subgenre and it makes me wonder why it's not more well known.
Drone Metal
Doom Metal
Sludge Metal
Stoner Metal
Some more Stoner for you

I don't expect you to listen to them all as some are quite long, but for those of you who don't know what it is, take a gander at the general gist of each one, and please none of the "Metal is shit, listen to proper music" please, it's subjective, and I think you might find this quite different...

Metal may be my favoite genre, And i will say the example of Stoner Metal you've posted is pretty good (considering the tiny bit of it i've listened to), but like you've said, i prefer the faster, angrier stuff :p

However, Tool is awesome when your stoned (true story... but i don't get stoned anymore)

It's fair enough for my tastes, but I would never listen to it regularly because of the dry-ass guitars on most stoner metal albums.

I am decidedly "meh" on this. I really can't comprehend how "slow and hard" works....

That's what she said! ZING!

Sorry. Slow and heavy music is basically just grinding the riffs out instead of shredding.

This ^^

well amongst other bands. I like to start off with something quite focused, bit of punk, post punk, hip-hop, Phil Spector produced 50's/60's pop or 60's/70's soul. Then move on to possibly 80's or 90's indie specifically My Bloody Valentine or early Jesus and Mary Chain spring to mind. Then perhaps move on to some Funkadelic, Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth or Pavement (depending on how I feel) then move in to the realms of Pink Floyd or perhaps Boards of Canada.

Listening to the 'Sleep Druid' track it is pleasent enough, but I doubt I will follow it up listening to anymore.

Grunge did what Emos do now but better
I always viewed them as almost contemparies, I tend not to say I like emo as people don't think ahh.. so you are a fan of Fugazi, The Get Up Kids and Sunny Day Real Estate. Admittedly it was about ten years ago (possibly slightly less) that I listened to the stuff above a lot. It appears the term emo has changed though.

Thats generally my sortof taste, however, if you are a fan of those sorts of things (especially MBV, JAMC and Sonic Youth), then you might find some drone metal interesting. You can definately hear some of those bands as influences, which is why a lot of bands on the scene are more popular with the indie crowd than the standard metal crowd (Boris, Sunn O))) and Isis have all got very good reviews in Pitchfork for example)

Kyuss, Fu Manchu and The Sword are probably my current favorite bands. Great relaxed, mellow sound (well not so much The Sword, they tend more towards epic), chill riffs, groove, ... what more do you need?

Actually, have some samples:

I love all styles of metal, Boris are AMAZING and I love kyuss, and for those who may be confused "SLOWER is always HEAVIER" it's just the way it is, the faster it gets the less heavy it is

Eh, I'm a bit more of a fan of the faster stuff. The songs you showed weren't that bad, but they weren't particularly interesting to me. I guess if I wanted slower stuff I already have songs like that. Although this might also just due to the fact that whenever I get exposed to a new music genre, it might take me a bit to get into it.

[Deleted videos as I don't know how to "snip" them but wanted to shrink my post slightly]

Thankyou, and to return the favour might I suggest White Light/White Heat era Velvet Underground (Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine and JAMC vrey much indebted to them). Also in the space of one album (WL/WH) they also cover everything from the focused pop of the title track to the strung out excesses of 'Sister Ray'. All together now "I'm searching for my mainline, you know I couldn't hit it sideways".

p.s. I think I probably thought of Sonic Youth etc due to their feedback infussed possible links to the track I listened to.

Also thankyou TeeBs for the seal of approval, I was going to comment on it but am anxious about another post feeling like I am monopolising the thread.

I would add VU videos in but I seem unable to embed videos.

EDIT: Listening to the first track, think I need headphones (and weed) to really apprecaitte it.

This is arguably where it all started:

I'll listen to heaps of different types of music when im stoned, from Afroman (rap, for smokin up) to Owl City to drum&bass and dubstep artists. For trippin' or chillin' Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Hendrix, Marley, RHCP, and the new Gorillaz album; Plastic Beach, are perfect.

Only experience with it is Kyuss, and while songs like Green Machine are pretty cool, the rest sound a bit too muddy. Probably because Homme plugged his guitar into a bass amp...

That said, I do like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. They aren't stoner metal, but they are awesome.

Failed to quote above post^^

If you like BRMC, I would reccomend you check out 'Jesus and Mary Chain' and 'White Light White Heat' era 'Velvet Underground'.
