well amongst other bands. I like to start off with something quite focused, bit of punk, post punk, hip-hop, Phil Spector produced 50's/60's pop or 60's/70's soul. Then move on to possibly 80's or 90's indie specifically My Bloody Valentine or early Jesus and Mary Chain spring to mind. Then perhaps move on to some Funkadelic, Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth or Pavement (depending on how I feel) then move in to the realms of Pink Floyd or perhaps Boards of Canada.

Listening to the 'Sleep Druid' track it is pleasent enough, but I doubt I will follow it up listening to anymore.
Thats generally my sortof taste, however, if you are a fan of those sorts of things (especially MBV, JAMC and Sonic Youth), then you might find some drone metal interesting. You can definately hear some of those bands as influences, which is why a lot of bands on the scene are more popular with the indie crowd than the standard metal crowd (Boris, Sunn O))) and Isis have all got very good reviews in Pitchfork for example)
[Deleted videos as I don't know how to "snip" them but wanted to shrink my post slightly]

Thankyou, and to return the favour might I suggest White Light/White Heat era Velvet Underground (Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine and JAMC vrey much indebted to them). Also in the space of one album (WL/WH) they also cover everything from the focused pop of the title track to the strung out excesses of 'Sister Ray'. All together now "I'm searching for my mainline, you know I couldn't hit it sideways".

p.s. I think I probably thought of Sonic Youth etc due to their feedback infussed possible links to the track I listened to.

Also thankyou TeeBs for the seal of approval, I was going to comment on it but am anxious about another post feeling like I am monopolising the thread.

I would add VU videos in but I seem unable to embed videos.

EDIT: Listening to the first track, think I need headphones (and weed) to really apprecaitte it.

This is arguably where it all started:

You just recommended me one of my top 5 favourite albums of all time.

Are you into any krautrock? Can, Neu! and Faust all did some interesting things with drone, minimalism etc. Also, modern composers like Terry Riley and Steve Reich are worth checking out.

You embed youtube videos with [ youtube=(code)], if you quote a post with an embedded video in it, you will see what it should look like.

That's what she said! ZING!

Sorry. Slow and heavy music is basically just grinding the riffs out instead of shredding.
A la Black Sabbath's Iron Man then? Just the opening maybe?

If that is the case, then I would be less lukewarm to the idea, but I still not very interested. Personal opinion though.

I fucking love metal, but most of this just sounds really dirty and slow. Not really a fan of it. I like metal because it's heavy and fast.

I love Stoner, Doom and sludge, but im pretty picky about what i listen to.

But heed my words, If you are even remotely into any of that kind of stuff, listen to Sloth.
They only ever made one album, called "The Voice Of God" and its near impossible to get, but its worth it. its pretty much the best stoner/doom album ever made in my humble opinion.

In this thread people dont understand that this thread isnt about getting stoned to music, but about the Metal Subgenre of Stoner Metal, which has its own slow heavy sound.
Which is called that because it was made to get stoned to?

I like some stoner metal, though only in small quantities. There's only so much Kyuss and Electric Wizard that I can listen to.
Doom metal, however, I'm totally in for.

No, its mostly inspired by Black Sabbath's riffing, its not made to get stoned too, although it could be great to get stoned too, but it has its own distinct sound, which its heavy slow riffs downtuned slow riffs ofcourse, kinda really close to Doom and Sludge, which what OP is talking about. If it were music to get stoned too, i doubt he would only put up stoner metal songs.
Im not saying its doesn't have a distinct sound, what I was trying to get at was even if you know what stoner metal is, your going to talk about music you would get stoned to.

Glad to hear you are a fan of VU, although on the flipside it does mean you can't discover WL/WH for the first time.

For some reason I got Neu muddled up with Sique Sique Sputnik so had never really listened to them. After a couple of brief searches on youtube I came a cross what i think is a French/Japanese rap band then the song "Hallogallo" which is incredible, thank you very much for the recommendation. One name that is missing from your list (intentionally?) is Kraftwerk. I think it is impossible to like krautrock and not have heard of them, but thought I would mention them simply as I am a fan.

p.s. thanks also for the advice on embedding youtube videos I was cutting and pasting huge imbed codes.

Yeah, "Iron Man" intro is a pretty decent example. There's a lot of Black Sabbath stuff that would fit into "stoner metal" too.

"Stoner metal" is one of those umbrella genres that just don't work. Same goes for 'Sludge'.

You have listed Sleep as 'sludge', but I've always thought of them as one of the Big Three of stoner, alongside Monster Magnet's Dopes to Infinity.

Personally, as you might have noticed, I prefer to call a whole range of bands as 'stoner', because to keep dividing and labelling bands is a retarded practice. You'll end up with genres like 'post-psychedelic stoner rock, with some sludge metal influences', which are utterly useless.

In any case, since my range is so wide, I can offer many different bands. Two of my favourites are:

CAUSA SUI

TRUCKFIGHTERS

I enjoy it somewhat. I can appreciate Tool, and I'm a huge Clutch fan. Clutch shifts genres so frequently though, it can't really be classified as stoner metal for long.
I'm not even sure if it counts, but it's excellent nonetheless.

Actually I listed Sleep as stoner =P Along with Kyuss. Also it was our very own Furburt who converted my musical taste to liking this sort of stuff, I have like 3000 stoner songs now =D

Electric Wizard is awesome, but all the others bore me almost from the second they start.
Check out Jex Thoth by the way, it's more Doom/Psychedelic rock but you might like it.

Haha, my bad, then.

It wasn't ment to offence, anyway. I can see why people put things in constantly narrower definitions, but with forms of art you'll end up with a crazy amount of different styles, to the point that the very function of labelling is lost.

Any band that has to qualify themselves by naming their genre "stoner ___" can fuck right off. Seriously way to pander to the lowest common denominator.

Oh god. I just listened to the stoner metal example and found it TERRIBLE. The same, over and over again..........aaaaaaaaaaaargh! Thats actually the worst music I've heard in a good long while and I'm a die-hard metal fan.

I like mostly faster metal because its more exciting/interesting to listen to. I like my music to be as melodic as possible. With...."extra" notes everywhere. A little something to discover every time I listen to a song.

That was awful. Just awful.
