I was watching one of these generic police shows last night when I noticed a lot of people shown acted very negatively or even violently toward the police and the camera crew even if they were not the ones being arrested. Made me wonder why the police revieve so much hate from some people for just doing their jobs. I personally respect the police, sometimes what they do may seem unfair but they get paid to enforce the law, they dont make it, it's just their job to enforce it and 99% of the time it's for the good of society. For some reason they then recieve the brunt of the anger when someone thinks a law is unfair or unjust.

Anyway discussion value. What do you think of the police in your country? Have any interesting or funny stories about your experiences with the law? Ever been arrested?

EDIT: I understand these shows are heavily edited, a bit like this post, but none the less you find attitude toward the police in some areas is very negative.

Funny you ask, a security guard shouted at me like a week ago. I failed the metal detector, so he came back with one of those handheld metal detectors, and my belt beeped. I looked down to see what had beeped, and the guy told me to keep my head up. I responded with my normal voice: "Sir, do not raise your voice"

For all the rap the police get in the UK, they were damned good in getting an arrest and conviction for the little shit that decided to use my face as a punching bag one evening on my ride home.

Very professional and have kept me informed of individuals progress since then. Sadly, unless he finds God, a woman he'll likely be in and out of the system until he winds up in the morgue.

All in, I've been very impressed with my local nick. Though it may well be different for inner city beats, there's not a lot goes on around me.

People act out when they see cops arresting someone else in the car with them in hopes that making a complete jackass of themselves will stop the cops from doing anything. As I said, it only makes them seem like complete and total jackasses.

I think that the cops, if they do their jobs correctly, should be respected. If they don't, then they don't get my respect.

The police get a bad rap because for every good officer out there, there's at least one bad one. I live in Texas and in a city nearby here, we just learned they themselves have been using illegals in employed capacity, in their case as a jailer. In my own city the a visiting cop responded to a scene outside his MOTHERS HOUSE, a gang fight, and shot and killed one of them. At the funeral three of them were arrested on federal warrents, and the police chief not only released them, but ordered the rest of the force to leave them and their gangs alone.

The police don't get a bad rap for nothing. Yes, there are people that will ***** because they got a ticket and every cop is out to get them, but in reality, there are cops out there doing real damage to our cities.

I have family and friends in the RCMP (Canadian Mounties), and I totally 'get' that these men and women deal with the worst of society everyday, putting their lives in jeopardy whenever they are on duty. They have my complete respect, and I always treat officers of the law with said respect. In my past dealings with them, every cop I've talked to has been courteous, understanding, and many of them were light-hearted, funny guys.

I like cops, and they have my respect.

I personally enjoy the police. Sure there are jerk face cops, but most cops are good and decent (At least in the US).

You have got to remember these shows will cherry pick the most exciting and interesting moments and those are when people get angry and/or violent to the police. Nobody I have met has thought that badly of the police.

the big thing i think people need to remember is that cops are people too.... yes they have a job to do and people whinge about them left righgt and centre... but at the end of the day they go home from work, put their feet up and have a beer just like everyone else.. alot of cops get abused or hated on principle because they are just doing their job which i think is disgusting....

the thing that irks me the most is that all the people who hate the police and whinge all the time about how shit they are are probably the people who are always in trouble or repeat offenders and dont follow the law... BUT when something happens to them like their car gets stolen or they get mugged or house broken into etc etc they are the first ones down at the station whinging about how the police are not doing their job properly and should be doing more.. .

recently a man was killed on a motorcycle in my country because he colided with a police car... him and his mate were having a race between 2 cities... one was on a motorcycle and one was in a Holden ute.... the holden ute was winning and doing about 190kph(118MPH)and a cop coming the other way picked him up and did a u turn to chase him.... the motorbike came up behind and was doing about the same speed and did not have enough time to slow down because he was going so fast and went through the cop car back window and died.... anyway a news interview was held for the driver of the ute and he is quoted as saying "i blame the police for killing my mate... its their fault he is dead... the cop was irresponsable for turning around and chasing me on that stretch of road because my mate didnt have time to stop.. i think the cop should be charged with murder"

anyway the cop was suspended while an investigation went on and he is now back working... no the cop didnt kill your mate.. you did cause you decided to break the law... you cant blame the police for stuff that happens when you break the law....

WAKE THE FUCK UP YOU LOSERS!!!

cops are not bad... real life is not a movie and generally if your nice to a cop and dont fuck him round he will go out of his way to help you...

I agree here. The cops where I grew up did they best to work with us when there was a rash of break-ins in my neighborhood and they even have a program called "shop with a cop" where a lower-income kid gets $100 and goes to a local department store for a day of shopping and then treated to pizza, they try theiur best to serve the community in anyway possible.
Then you have the douches out in a certain neighboring city that arrest people because they go 2 miles over the speed limit and haven't filled their quota. Sorry your city is loaded with hills, officer -___-. It really all depends.

I've never really had trouble with the police... they smile at me while I walk down the road, I smile back thinking what fools they - *ahem* I mean they are very good and in my experiences they have responded quickly and efficiently with thought for the people involved.

They have as much, if not more, of my respect, than I even to soldiers.

I've met a lot of good cops.

Haven't met any bad cops. Yet. They're out there, but I haven't seen them.

People used to respect the police, i think the problem is that the system has (at least in the uk) steered away from a local bobby who everyone knows. In my town we dont have a permenant police force, all part time, and the gangs from the cuty which is maybe only 50 meters away know this, they come and deal drugs over here because there isnt anyone to arrest them, its quite sickening

I think negative headlines in the yellow press really hurt the regular cop. As stated earlier it is undeniable that there are bad cops, these ones make the headlines which form public opinion.

Here - for example - there was an incident where a cop raped two female prisoners, he got charged with 4(?) years of prison. This offers two public instances to be mad at: The police (for the crime) and the jurisdiction (for a mere slap on the wrist compared to what that man had done).

If now one comes into contact with either one they won't think: "Wow I'm sure that's a really nice guy in the uniform over there", but rather "I hope that's not an asshole like the one in the news".
The latter reaction is likely to lead to fear, which may in turn cause anger.

Well actually if you act nice, you are more likely to get a ticket.
My sister acts super nice to cops when she gets a ticket but her friend acts like "No! I wasn't speeding I knew how fast was driving, maybe you made a mistake, are you sure you didn't?!" and the cop may a lot of the time says "You can go...."

I don't really ever come into contact with police, considering I don't even drive yet.

Though, from my experiance (Or, more correctly, my watching of CSI) it seems that people get frustrated with the police because the police enforce the justice system, which can sometimes be extremly unfair. I've been angry at many endings of CSI's because of unfair punishments that I've seen. (I don't know how accurate the justice system is in that show, but it seems rather unfair sometimes.)

But, with all that said, I would always treat a cop with respect if I ever came into contact with one.

My mom works as a dispatcher for the police here, so I have tons of funny stories, but most of them are only funny if you know the people. I don't usually have a problem with police. If anything, it's usually other kinds of security, or like, higher authority than police, kinds of people.

I appreciate that police officers enforce the laws, mediate situations that need to be mediated and arrest people who need arresting. This does not mean I have to like them, and I don't. I know they're just doing their job, but their job is to intimidate me and backhandedly convince me to unknowingly give up my rights to make their job easier. Their job is to give out enough tickets or fines and seize enough forfeited civil assets to balance their budgets. I can't comment on what officers I don't know are like outside of active duty, and it's unfair to judge all cops based on how the bad ones act, but I do not like them while they're fulfilling those duties because that involves screwing people over.

They get a bad rap because if they know the rules then they sure as hell know how to break them without getting caught in the act. And in today's global mindset it pays to get ahead through fair means and foul moreso than it does to do things 'by the book'. Doesn't mean there aren't genuinely good cops who try to do what's best for everyone, but it does mean that most of them will sooner be the exact opposite of the paragon of justice that is toted out every now and then on the news.

Cops has a bad habit of showing the very violent cases. My friend at a scene of cops once actually said that after a dip in the ratings, the camera once paid off a few pedestrians to be a little rough with the cops and get "Warned" away. It's all show and bluff... Things like that don't happen in Montreal unless it starts to get really bad. Then again, the people are smart enough that when the cops say "PLease stay in your car while we check this information sir" You stay in the fucking car...
