Uhh. Too bad he had equally high chance of winning against someone mashing buttons.

Also, who still cares about those world records?
Sure... because button masher can do this:

There is a monumental gap between professional tournament play, and eating cheetos and fucking around with your friends in your living room.

These people play for 6-8+ hours a day, they live, east, sleep and breath 2D Fighters. Playing against them is a game of chess, one mistake, game over.

Fuckin Daigo...that video was awesome when i saw it yrs ago and still is today...that being said i would never play SF with this man...
You should, the guy plays on Xbox live and GFWL and has been known to give people lessons and teach them various techniques he has developed.

Daigo is a great guy.

Hard to applaud a Ken player. Or any "skilled" SF player. Though I only know A and B rankers I play randomly in SSIV, most of which are cheap jerks. Then again, maybe Im dumb for backing off when I corner a guy. My own fault for fair play.

People are people - if he could do it, anyone could, given time and motivation.
This is actually not true.

There was an article on The Escapist a while back during their carebare "We love the casual gamer" bent about a Study (I think in Korea with Starcraft Players) that showed (as with all things) some people are just naturally better than others. They have faster reaction times, better eye to hand co-ordination, their brain makes the correct decision in 1/60th of a second.

Some people are simply incapable of learning no matter how long they practice.

Everyone has their own natural glass ceiling where they simply will never progress past, this ceiling can be pretty high but there is still a physical and mental limit to their ability. And some people are just better than others and they will always be better.

Anyone can learn to play Basketball, but there has only ever been one Michael Jordan.
Anyone get into a fist fight but there will only ever be one Muhammad Ali.
Anyone can pick up a controller and mash out some Street Fighter... but there will only ever be one Daigo.

Wow, people really take their Street Fighter seriously(probably too seriously).

I guess it's cool that he won something, but it's a shame it came from Guinness. That place is a joke now.

Actually... in Street Fighter at least, anyone who takes an hour to memorize a few combos can destroy a masher easily 100% of the time. Mashers cannot - that is CANNOT - break a well timed combo. You have to have some knowledge of what the hell you're doing.

Seriously, I've memorized a few combos for a few characters in Street Fighter IV (I got it last week) and played online, and I have yet to see Chun-Li's drop kick combo be broken, which takes away a third of the opponent's health and tosses them to a corner where they pose no threat for a couple seconds. Also, there's a counter to any move that can be pulled by anyone with fast reflexes, which opens up the masher to getting destroyed.

Getting close to a masher is really easy, too... Jump over them and kick them in the head, and pull a combo. They don't have a chance if they don't counter (and there's about a 1/100 chance of them doing so by accident).

So please, don't simply repeat sentiments spouted by Yahtzee (who admits he doesn't "get" fighting games) and go play a GOOD fighter.

If they can't uncorner themselves, they're fair game. It isn't that hard.

Not every character has a Vega backflip (I use that move more than anything it seems)
I care about enjoying the fight more than winning. A fair loss often feels good even after wasting cheap players.

One thing that upped my game for Chun-Li in SFIV was CLP, CLP, CLP, CLP, LP, HP.

Its such a fast combo, can interrupt a lot of the other specials and does a decent amount of damage thanks to the HP at the end and will also finish with a good amount of distance between them and you and with the right timing is unpunishable by anyone but Zangief.

Its also great for making your opponent sloppy because its such an annoying thing to be caught by that less disciplined players will start to get reckless.

Imposing a glass ceiling on yourself and others by saying 'no one could possibly be as good as this guy' is as good as shooting yourself in the foot. Michael Jordan wasn't sitting there as a kid thinking 'You know what? Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the best BBaller there'll ever be. I might as well not even try'.

Disney releases movies all the time about people triumphing through adversity. I won't make light of this guy's achievement because he obviously did spend awhile learning to play, and his motivation was definitely up there.

But the possibility is always there for someone to overcome.

And the sports <-> games references are giving a frightening insight on the types of people who revere these 'world records'.

Every character has a "flip move" (Chun-Li, Vega), a quick-use attack (Sakura, Fei Long) or a quick grab (Gen, Rufus). Anybody can get out of a corner.
