@0:24, that is Shiva from Streets of Rage 2 & 3. I take it you've forgotten about him.
I've only played SoR 3, and I don't remember that much of it. I got as far as the stage where you need to break down walls before the bulldozer kills you.

Honestly, what I remember more than anything is Roo, and how I always tried to beat Bruce before him.

I know child me would not mock her name.
Oooh, goody two shoes? :p

Meh, needed you at school. People mocked me for my name all the time, and at work, little shits (a.k.a. teenagers) still find a way. :(
I've had my share of bullies too. It was really bad in the 6th grade and some early parts of the 9th grade. By that point in high school, either the people that were jerks to me finally got along, went to a different school/expelled, or if they were still assholes. We made non-verbal agreements to not talk or interact with each other unless we were in the same class.

As for not playing SOR1 & 2, get to it. NOOOOOWWWWW!!!! (demon voice) I don't care how you get the games. GOG, Steam, Genesis Collection, originals, or eShop. I'm surprised the bulldozer section gave you a lot of trouble. I know Sega of America ramped the difficulty to crazy levels, because the JP version (Bare Knuckle 3). Even on the hardest difficulty, you'll rarely ever die. For me, the sections that gave me the most trouble was rescuing the chief of police/senator section. The main problem with SOR3 is that enemies gets so much health if you crank the difficulty to hard or above, and putting it on easy gets you a fake ending and you can't go any further unless you're on Normal. Fucking 90s gate keeping and rental scam bullshit. If you get the Genesis Collection (PS4/XOne/Switch) or the SOR trilogy for XBLA/PSN (last gen) you can play the Japanese counterparts of all the games.

Actually, I think I like her better than Skate.
I agree, and I am a fan of Skate. The problem with Skate is that it's a bit tedious to play him solo. You need a co-op partner. This is me more so talking about playing on Mania (2) or Very Hard (US/EU version of 3).

Cherry Hunter, hmm? She can [redacted - insert your own innuendo here] any time!

Eh, she seems an OK character, with her diagonal attacks she seems to be the new Skate. This is a real nitpick but I never really liked characters with a "musician" design - instruments aren't weapons, they would splinter after a couple of hits. And no, playing your instrument a bit loud is not an AOE attack.

This leaves us with the obligatory Tank character, then? I'm hoping for my boy Max to return.

You forgot to add the snippet of <link=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izGwDsrQ1eQ>Careless Whisper to your innuendo.

Anyway, I'm actually glad this exists. Streets of Rage was never my favourite Sega IP, but I played and enjoyed SoR 3 on the Mega Drive, so, hey, it's nice to see them back, and that the characters have aged.

The 2d/3d brawler genre is back.
Um, is it?

I'm not dissing the genre (even if it isn't really my thing), but I don't recall any massive resurgence. I recall Double Dragon IV getting an installment in 2017 (that was panned) and...that's it.

3D, sure (Devil May Cry for instance), but 2D? Not so much.

2D has had some great stuff too, especially Dragon's Crown. That game was absolutely stunning to look at and was actually pretty damn complex for a genre typically simplistic.

You get to fight dragons while riding on a sabertooth cat!
I want a sequel. I also love Japanese interpretations of western fantasy.
I just want it to show up on steam. I want all of Vanillaware's games to be on steam.

If you want another really good brawler you should check out Fight'n Rage.

EDIT:
I got this for the Switch and Steam. I recommend the TakeOver as well. It's unoffically Streets of Rage 4, until the actual SOR4 comes out.

That does look pretty cool.

And now I'm interested. The yellow shirted badass brings the pain and bitchin shades to the fight.

Jax, is that you? 0_0

Yes, I know he's based on Zan, but that aside, cripes, energy beams? Energy abilities from Blaze? Energy shields? And here was me thinking that a boxing kangaroo in Streets 3 was peak insanity.

I used to love Streets of Rage 1 and 2 as my favourite of the genre, but I'm not that excited about this. SoR 3 was nothing to write home about. All I can say is they had better put the effort into the soundtrack - doesn't sound anywhere near as good tbh.

I recommend giving 3 another chance. Just play the Japanese version. It's easier even on the hardest difficulty. and it's pretty easy to play as it's on two different compilation packs where you can switch the setting to Japanese. the soundtrack was ahead of its time even with the third game. I still refer to soundtrack to the first two games, but three does a good job. 3 had dubstep in 1994, before dubstep became even a thing. Yuzo does it better too. Hell, you'll have a bigger appreciation for the Streets of rage 3 levels and songs, if you play The Streets of Rage remake. The soundtrack of 4 will be awesome. nothing can reach the height of the first or second game soundtrack, but look forward to it.

One thing that does makes me a bit hopeful about it that LizardCube and DotEmu, who seem to be behind this, did a really good modern rework of Wonderboy III (originally for the Master System). The artwork looks very similar.
