It's not that people are aggressive because they use profanity, it's that they use profanity because they're aggressive.

Fucking nonsense. Its no more harmful that using any other word. Theres nothing magically tainting about the words themselves. If anything it would affect them due to the context.
Watching a movie with a stoner saying "Im gonna get a mother fucking cheeseburger." is vastly different to seeing a movie with someone bashing someones head in while calling them a fucking **** etc.

And even then there is no real proof that violent media makes people violent so this is clearly some jackass just trying to tag their claim onto the violent media argument.
this.

context people, context! words do not magically hold weight or force emotions.

Study Claims Profanity Causes Aggression

Researchers at Brigham Young University claim that profanity in videogames and television causes aggressive behavior in kids.

A BYU study asking 223 young teenagers about their favorite videogames and television shows and how often they cursed found that kids who are exposed to profanity are more likely to use profanity themselves, which isn't terribly surprising. What is a bit of a surprise, however, is that they're also reportedly more likely "hit, kick and punch others, or engage in non-physical aggressive behavior like gossiping and spreading rumors about someone."

"Profanity is kind of like a stepping stone. You don't go to a movie, hear a bad word, and then go shoot somebody. But when youth both hear and then try profanity out for themselves it can start a downward slide toward more aggressive behavior," said BYU family professor and study Dr. Sarah Coyne, who refrains from swearing herself due to an "honor code" at the university that forbids the use of naughty language by both students at staff.

Ohio State University Professor Brad Bushman, who was not involved in the study but has taken part in previous media-critical research [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109455-Study-Claims-Anti-Game-Research-More-Reliable], said the BYU study demonstrates that "profanity is not harmless."

"Children exposed to profanity in the media think that such language is 'normal,' which may reduce their inhibitions about using profanity themselves," he said in a statement of his own.

But as usual, not everyone agrees with Coyne's conclusions. Psychology professor Dr. Timothy Jay of the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts said the assumption that language can harm kids is without any basis and noted that previous research has demonstrated that words, including the bad ones, can actually have a beneficial effect.

"There is literature that shows the prosocial effects of media on children, the authors ignore these reports," he told Fox News [http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/10/17/swearing-on-tv-linked-to-teen-aggression/]. "The authors make no case for profanity being beneficial, as in humor elicitation, or social bonding, or as a coping mechanism, or as a relief from pain."

Profanity is an emotive sound, it actually stems from a different part of your brain and causes different reactions. No, it doesnt mean if you say "fuck" you become violent, but if you say "FUCK! FUCK YOU!" tensely, you are directing hate towards someone, which is different, and encourages you to make more hate and violence.

Critical Thinking: Would you guys mind more language filters in games, if that will stop the complaining that games cause violence and bad for kids? You gotta admit, hearing what a 12 year says on a videogame with adults does not sit well with people, lol.

Show your work.

People that use profanity are more likely to do other assholish things like hit, kick and punch others, or engage in non-physical aggressive behavior like gossiping and spreading rumors about someone is the point of the article. Now instead of blaming it on video games or some other evil thing can we please just blame this on the real cause "parenting or lack there of?"

If your kid thinks it's alright to swear, bully and all that, you raised it wrong. The cause of the problem is always closer then you think.

On a related note, aggressive types are also more profane. Significant? Pfft, nah, let's ignore that.

It's more like violence causes profanity and not the other way around but I bet their eyes were too full of shit to see that relationship, because they set out from moment one to prove that profanity is bad.

Because it couldn't possibly be that naturally more aggressive individuals are more likely to swear! Clearly swearing causes aggression.

Eh, I doubt it would do anything. This is just another excuse to bash games and television. Get rid of the profanity and they will just find something else. People will find a way to complain about Elmo Teaches Typing!

I'd love to see how well Dr. Coyne adheres to her honor code when she stubs her toe or locks herself outside her house.

In the meantime, I'll be putting together a study examining if pointless, biased anti-new-media studies cause higher aggression and profanity in the newborn-to-dead age group.

I personally think they just got it backward when they presented the idea in the first place and had to roll with it. Aggression causes profanity, not the other way around, just because people say their fucks and shits around me doesn't make me want to kill kittens or crap like that.

Do you know why all these studies are bullshit? Because all kids play video games these days. At least all boys. And most of the kids were always assholes. Gaming used to be the hobby for introverted kids, shy kids who liked to play alone more than with other kids. Now video games are like any other form of entertainment. Everyone is exposed to games. So the study doesn't prove anything. Games or no games, majority of people have always been assholes and majority of kids have always been assholes. Nothing's changed.

So researchers found a link that children exposed to media containing profanity demonstrate more bad tenancies. OK, got that.

The question is, are the bad tenancies caused by exposure to media that is too adult or by the bad parenting that exposes them to said media?
