Hello dear Escapists, I was wondering if you could help me with something.

Recently I officially started the first classes for my BA (or is it BSc? I don't know) in Psychology, and the professors saw fit to throw a SHITLOAD of work my way, right off the bat. :(
Not easily discouraged, I sat myself down with a nice big glass of lemonade and a nice, heavy book. After an hour or so I felt like listening to some music while studying, but I found that most music I like is more distracting than anything else.

However, after a while, Eric Satie's Trois Gymnopedies came past, and this was actually a blessing for my concentration. So now I'm sitting here, Trois Gymnopedies and Six Gnossiennes on repeat, and I'm getting a bit bored with playing the same two songs at infinitum.

Therefore, my question to you is: what kind of music would you recommend in this context?

Classical. No really I'm serious. It works wonders.
You can tune it out as well as listen to its intricacies. Get a Bach Pandora station or something. Or Miss Hildagard with her chants and suchlike.

yes, I hear that the classical musics are meant to help with concentrating and such.
Don't know if it's true though :p I don't listen to that stuff :p

I'd say Classical or Trance. I listen to Trance when I work, its easy to tune out, but still keeps you on that beat and flow to help you work.

i was listening to remain in light by the talking heads yesterday and got an entire 1,800 word essay done in about three hours. this was a miracle for me, usually i'm easily distracted and it takes me ages to do work at home. so it seems reasonable to assume that that album was a boost to my concentration
softer music also works, especially Wilco.

Really instrumentals are where its at.
If you don't like Classical (I'm sure there's some classical you would like) try Jazz.
There are also some good instrumental music from around the world: try Indonesian Jegog or Japanese drumming.
And if you only like contemporary music, you still have plenty of instrumental stuff to choose from: guitarists like Steve Vai or even just weird groups like Barry Black.

Interol would probably be my choice. The classical makes sense to me in that calm music seems most fitting. Loud metal would be more distracting for most. I need sound in general to concentrate though. Silence makes me think, thinking makes me sad, being sad makes me not work.

Try any Jack Johnson song. I found it relaxing when studying for my GCSE's.

Any song, in my experiance, is distracting as hell so I always just listen to instrumental peices.

Nobou Uematsu, And So I Watch You From Afar and Philip Glass do amazing things to my concentration.

If you're gonna use Nobou the FFX OST and his only actual album Phantasmagoria are the ones for it. No black mages though you don't want something that's too busy.

Must second this. Something with steady beats that will sit in the background and melt right into your brain.

I can't listen to 80s music while I'm working because it makes me want to sing along. But trance or classical are good choices.

I can't concentrate on studying with music in the background. It distracts me.

Both.
I find that there are some music typed that I generally don't listen to (like country) but even within those genres, I can find stuff I like. So if you haven't heard classical music you like, you probably haven't heard it all.

My point however is that I think instrumentals (of any type) are best for studying.
