Study Says Gamers Are Bad Drivers

You may think you were born with a steering wheel in your hand but a new study has found that racing gamers actually make worse drivers than their non-gaming counterparts.

Doing its part for the never-ending pursuit of Science, Continental Tires quizzed 2000 drivers in the U.K. between the ages of 17 and 39, half gamers and half not, on their driving habits. What it learned will shock you: gamers - that is to say, people who play racing videogames - take more risks, do more stupid things and are stopped by the police more often than non-gamers. Yet at the same time, gamers on average pass their driver's license test with fewer attempts than non-gamers and also suffer fewer fender-benders and other minor incidents.

"It seems that while gamers develop useful skills and are more confident, they need to apply some balance with a sensible assessment of risk," said Tim Bailey of Continental.

31 percent of gamers reported running a red light over the past 12 months, compared to just 14 percent of non-gamers; 45 percent claim to have suffered road rage, while only 22 percent of non-gamers acknowledge the same issue. The figures are similar for actions like accidentally clipping someone's car not saying anything about it (19 percent to 11), speeding (25 percent to 13) and scaring others with their driving (26 percent to 11). On the other side of the coin, non-gamers required an average of three attempts to pass their driver's test, as opposed to only two attempts for gamers, and have been involved in an average of two "prangs" over the past 12 months, as opposed to just one for gamers.

"I am not surprised that regular gamers find themselves making the same decisions and judgements when driving for real as they do when in the virtual world," said Peter Rodger of the Institute of Advanced Motorists [http://www.iam.org.uk/] safety group. "The issue is that when actually driving, our actions lead to 'real' results, and mistakes have very real consequences."

The final results, gamers vs. non-gamers:

Since the study was done in the UK, I doubt it applies to me. See, I'm an excellent driver, who happens to play the occasional racing game. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to clean neighborhood children out of my grill...

And have they excluded other variables (like age, gender etc)?

Also, it appears we crash less, and get our drivers test quicker, so not all is bad.

Wow, this has made me feel so much better about me driving this year. I've heard questions due to my autism, how I might not be tall enough and how I'm tired most of the time and now apparently video games make me a worse driver.

Well shit. And my latest Driving game wasn't exactly something that you could shrug off as educational. Burnout Paradise Ultimate Box. I feel screwed, royally.

Calumon: Aww nuts. Now I can't go to the Bakery with him. He'll crash and I'll hurt my nose! : (

Gamers in the UK are insane though. Seriously, most of my computing class games, and I wouldn't trust a anyone of them behind the wheel.

I don't believe it.

I personally am a very skilled driver. I just really like bitchin' powerslides on snowy roads.

I must not be normal then- The driver's test administrator told me I was a bit too careful. I still passed with flying colors, though! :D

I think the only way gaming really affected my driving ability is in the fact that I always remember which way to turn the wheel when going in reverse. Apparently, others have a hard time when learning how to drive.

You see, we develop useful skills! They said so themselves! We just can't live within the constraints of your primitive road rules, MAAAAAAAAAAN!

=P Seriously though, drive safe, okay everyone? No koopa shells out the windows!

I've been pulled over once for speeding (he said 66 in a 45, my speedometer read 55 and slowing down before I hit the 45 zone, but I digress) in the 4 (maybe 5) years that I've had my license. I got a perfect score during my driving "in cars" and on my driving test I got marked off a half a point for taking a left turn a tiny bit too sharp. I can handle my car in the worst weather better than most people can in prime conditions.

I take heavy offense to this. The only thing I suffer from on that list is the occasional phone conversation and road rage (Simply because I cannot fathom how you can live in northern Ohio and still not know how to drive in snow. Especially in your 4WD SUV).

Hey that guy chopped me up at the roundabout, I had no choice but to do a takedown on him. But seriously, I'm actually afraid of driving so I don't think I count.

Or maybe gamers are just proud of their breaking of laws and the like in real driving (I mean games reward it most times too)

They didn't include fatal accidents in their results, did they? A guy I work with drives like a maniac and has gotten dozens of tickets, but he's never gotten into an accidents ever. I'd say this is a fairly important statistic they left out.

Pfft, I drive like a well-visioned grandma. The only car accidents I've been in were because the other drivers hit me.

Self-reporting and issues of statistical significance kind of make the conclusions iffy for me.
