So if I made a movie about giant, lesbian monster dogs and -monkeys fighting with honour and choreography, in a 1980 setting, with a Heavy Metal soundtrack, MovieBob would love me?

Sounds like a foolproof plan. I would definetly have seen that movie.

Yeah, this pretty much sums up why I don't agree with Moviebob, but still find him rather enteraining nonetheless. I don't share the same tastes as him, but he still manages to make his (very different) viewpoint interesting.

For instance: Lesbians in film. If you actually know any lesbians IRL, it just seems kinda weird to fetishize them. In reality, it's just two normal chicks in a relationship, and their public displays of affection cann be just as nauseating as those of a straight couple. In the movies, it's always two HAWT actresses acting in a manner that is clearly supposed to appeal to adolescent males. But hey, I won't begrudge their understanding of the target audience. If it appeals to your viewers, of course you're gonna use it to your advantage.

I agree with him on the fight choreography to a degree, though. But stylized violence still doesn't appeal quite as much as the brutally realistic variety.

Good list, but it's not a formula for a good movie. Some elements contradict:

Heroes who are jerks don't fight with honor.
Epic picture win.

Hey, another guy who 100% cannot find men attractive. My inability to get girls has given me time to consider homosexuality more than a little bit, but it's just impossible because men are so freaking gross. I can't even look at regular porn because it often involves at least one guy. Give me one fully clothed woman doing nothing, over that same chick banging fifty guys. Yuck.

Two things:

1. You thought the Hills Have Eyes remake was awesome. I love you. On a similar note, what do you think of Devil's Rejects? Because I love that movie.

2. I think you hit the nail on the head about lesbians and melodrama. We may try to deny it and there may be the occasional exception, but on the whole, I don't think men are really sentimental, romantic, or outwardly emotional. In fact the only romantic film I ever enjoyed, and largely because it was convincing enough for me to buy into, was Aimee & Jaguar. Excellent, excellent, film. Have you seen it?

I agree with most of your points.

The only thing I seriously disagreed with though was the part about chimps. I haven't ever been fond of chimps, to me they have been hairy, short men with malformed feet and a tendency to throw shit at people. Gorillas (especially the giant CG type) are awesome though.

The thing I agreed with most was the thing about dogs. Although I have trouble when any kind of animal (other than a chimp) gets killed in a movie. I can see a human killed in horrible ways (fictional of course) and not get effected, but if a dog gets injured, I get a lump in my throat.

If I wrote for this website I would never read comments because it's full of people that don't get the point.

1) He's not saying these are recipes for his favorite movie, just things that are considered an added bonus. I doubt he has that straight-to-DVD flick about puppies in space just because it has dogs. It's just better than if it starred cats.

But imagine if it starred platypus.

2) Congratulations, you disagree with him on a point. Now everything he says must be wrong! Sheesh, if you expect everyone to agree with your perspective how can you have friends? How can you even talk to other people?

On the topic, I understand the inability to understand why women are physically attracted to men. But I've never quite understood the whole thing with chicks doing each other either. Then again, I'm not a pornography guy to begin with, but at least you can place yourself mentally as one of the guys thinking if that were you. In lesbian porn and stuff, it's just "Oh, hey, don't mind me, I'll just sit here and watch...which is creepy.....and lonely...".

I'll just chalk it up to "one of those things people make too big of a deal out of", like Catholic school girls and cheerleaders (and yes, I understand the implications of both, but it's still sort of meh for me).

On fight choreography, I like it at times. However, it's become so over-used that action scenes are starting to pull me out of movies. And this is a guy who loves watching The One despite all of its problems (worst use of Papa Roach ever, aside from the actual use of Papa Roach). Hell, just watching Matrix: Reloaded on TV again helped it sink in. When your chase scene has commercials in the middle and leaves me checking my watch, it's lost all sense of meaning. I don't care how many ways you endanger the MacGuffin or whatever is at stake, it's way too indulgent and loses its value.

So after seeing so much choreography, the second I see Kung-Fu fists flying around my eyes glaze over and I wait until the plot picks up again. Same goes with overly choreographed sword fights and lightsabers.

As for huge ass monsters...I was really hoping Cloverfield would somehow kick start a new generation of Godzilla style flicks. I was naive...

I'd add cats to this pretty comprehensive list.

Also, Bob? Have you seen [em]Rise: Blood Hunter[/em]? Not a great movie, but it's fun, and there's a lesbian scene with Carla Gugino.

Yes.

THAT Carla Gugino.

Well, then, you and I have some different tastes, though I will agree on dinosaurs (as long as they're not Disney'd up).

However, to divert for our differences and similarities ('cause I don't wanna figure what I like, especially as a not-so-movie guy with shifting interests, like maybe 30s fashion ('cause 50s is "laem" except in Fallout-ish ways)), let us observe something from DOOM that is, yes, awesome.

As far as most of the rules in your list go, Monsters, Giant Monsters, Lesbians (In some certain contexts), Heavy Metal, Fight Choreography, Heroes Who are Jerks and Fighting with Honor are probably some of my favorites.

Although, one set of rules that I enjoy is the idea of Modern Day David Vs. Goliath fight scenes. If you follow me on this one, Raising Arizona and The Mask have two great fights scenes.

Raising Arizona has Nicolas Cage's H.I. fighting against Randall "Tex" Cobb's Leonard Smalls in an epic fight scene that has Knives, Motorcycles, Grenades, babies (A rare exception) and a badass fight scene in which Nic Cage's character
Only gets one real hit on the villain, and that's with a plywood board, and that's it, well and the grenade
really isn't the same character he continuously plays today.

The movie is really good, but that fight scene is just awesome to me because of the badass villain against an average size hero.

The Mask also has a very awesome fight scene involving Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey playing the normal persona of the aforementioned hero) against Dorian Tyrell (Peter Greene, he played Zed in Pulp Fiction and got shot in the pilot of Justified) Ipkiss is just a bank teller fellow, while Dorian is a gangster. How do the two match up? Well, pretty well, suprisingly. Every time I watch the movie (I revisit it quite often) I actually get caught up in it all over again.

So if anyone asked my opinion, Modern Day David V. Goliath fight scenes are kind of cool. Big, almost hulking villain against someone that's about my size makes for a nearly awesome movie.

Compiling your list into one theoretical film made me think that you must LOVE those cheesy SciFi movies that have like a giant dog terrorizing some smug prick and his two bisexual girlfriends, complete with mediocre fisticuffs fight.

It sounds as if a movie based upon Norse Mythology would hit on most of these points, with it's giant monsters including a giant dog (well, Fenris is a wolf and they are part of the dog family),fighting with honor and inspiring many a heavy metal rock band.

Unfortunately for you, there is too much focus on the derring-do and beauteous muscular physiques of manly men and not much love shown for women by anyone of any kind, let alone other women.

Maybe someone can find a way for mythological events to take place in the 1950s/80s, possibly with a pet giant ape belonging to the Jotuns?

Is it possible to go too far with combining the good things on this list, say, giant dog-woman lesbians in a mash-up of the 1950s and 1980s fighting with honor to a heavy metal soundtrack?

I seem to recall you mentioning a fondness for Brotherhood of the Wolf and I think this covers pretty much the whole film.

This is actually fairly valuable stuff to know to see how well your views will match up with ours. Any chance of a similar list of small things that will always turn you off from a movie as well?

My favorite movie, and I can't say this enough, will always be Big Fish - but as far as 2nd place goes... I have to give it to an action movie, but I can't pick my favorite, and I think that some others may agree with me that it is a hard decision between Speed, Die Hard, and Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior. (With special-honors to the last scene of Con-Air)

But, between those films, a lot of them match your likes - so I'm glad that I can get a little validation from MovieBob.

One thing though, if you aren't a fan of realistic MMA fighting shows would you be more of a fan of the entertainment fighting shows? The more choreographed and practiced shows? I haven't been a regular viewer for years now, but I still enjoy sitting down to watch the fireworks from time to time.
