Americans are not as "sue happy" as people like to say. Every now and then a stupid lawsuit makes headlines, but what they don't tell you is that they are relatively few and far between and never really go anywhere anyway.

And they few that do go somewhere are reversed on appeal. Like the McDonald's coffee lady. Everyone knew when she won millions, but nobody knew about it when her award got reduced on appeal to only a few thousand which wasn't even enough to cover her medical bill.

Also, it's precisely because we have an easy to access court system that we don't have duels or blood-feuds anymore.
Actually she received quite a decent sum from what I heard; granted not even a fraction of the amount she was awarded by the jury however it was high. I could be wrong though; frankly I hope I am. The only reason she was awarded anything was because it was a rigged court. Seriously twelve working class (usually) jury members to decide if the multi billion dollar 'tyrant' that is McDonald's should have to pay another working class citizen for a mistake? Yeah...

Hell another story claimed she spilled the coffee on herself because she was in her car and had it between her legs but who knows.

OT: Pathetic, I am soon to be going into business myself and if I were to ever catch wind of this nonsense, I could not give a damn of her academic credentials. She is obviously not qualified by filling this ridiculous lawsuit and bragging about nothing. She can have a GPA of 2.7, 3.1 or 4000 for all I care. There are many factors taken into account when hiring a person and in many cases college is overlooked... required yet overlooked as ridiculous as it may sound.

Oh and congrats, you went to school every single day like a good little girl. Yeah while I missed fifty days a year back in high school at a minimum and still finished HS with flying colors. :p

If this actually goes through (and stranger things have happened with our court system) it's going to open the floodgates for further lawsuits by dumbassed kids who get the quick and dirty business degrees because "Hey, a business degree can get you a job anywhere!".

In full disclosure I too am enrolled in the Business program in my school, but I am getting an International Business degree coupled with a Marketing degree and a Japanese minor.....two and a half degrees in 5 years is a ***** lemme tell you......

well, this seems rather pathetic.

under almost any other circumstances i would be irritated by the stupidity behind this, but it just seems to pathetic for me to do anything other then smile at.

2.7? is that good in college?

anyway her elevator does not go up all the way. Some might "pounce" on her academic credentials but some won't especially in these tough times. She actually sounds a bit stuck up to me.
I can only guess that it's a typo. A 3.0 is the bare minimum to get the most basic scholarships. At least, it is around where I live. However, if she's in that much debt then it wouldn't surprise me that she had to pay her way through her entire time at school. Crap, hope she doesn't read this, I could get sued for libel....
I'm her in desguise. Prepare to hear from my lawyers. >:D

IIRC, Her award was reduced to like 70-something thousand but her medical bills were almost 100 thousand. The burns were 3rd degree burns and they were pretty extensive.

I think this lady needs a reality check more than a paycheck. I wonder how she's supposed to pay for the lawyers if she is unemployed
Well im guessing part of the lawsuit will also include these litigation bills. Either way, yea she does need a good kick in the ass.

One of the fun things about the American court system is we don't follow the "Loser Pays" style that is in places like Great Britain. We have tons of lawyers who will prosecute cases on the basis that if they win, then they get a cut from the award, but if they lose, the court doesn't require the plaintiff to pay for court fees and so there is no harm in trying to get money. In Britain, if you bring forward a lawsuit(frivolous or otherwise) and lose, YOU pay both parties legal fees.....cuts down on people throwing out lawsuits until one "sticks".

It was? Good, the lawsuit was insane. If her injuries were no fault of her own, I would argue paying for those medical bills, although she blew that away by seeking millions. Nevertheless many stories cite she caused the injuries by being neglectful. Thus c'est la vie, deal with it.

So far as I know the people who usually profit from these stupid lawsuits are the lawyers. This stuff happens in Canada too.

She had the coffee in her lap, SHE TOOK THE LID OFF WHILE DRIVING, and she knew coffee was hot since nineteen-fucking-forty.....she deserved nothing.

Now you can't get a decently hot cup of anything served anymore.

Edit: She was initially awarded 2.86 million, it got dropped to $640,000, and her medical bill came to $11,000.......over $600,000 because "the coffee was defective!".

2.7, really? With a solid attendance record? Obviously she wasn't paying attention to all the classes she was so solidly attending if she only left with a 2.7.

I heard one story... some women went to sue a place because a kid was running around in the store, ran into her, and she help and broke her hip or something... She was suing because they let kids run around in the store... funny thing is, it was her kid that ran into her...

In America you are free to sue as much as you want to and even if you lose you really don't lose because you don't get hit by court fees or the defendants legal fees.

The US is infamous with how easy it is to sew people in most countries i've been to.
Sewing people is generally seen as bad form unless you're a surgeon. Or a crazy tatoo artist. I wouldn't advise going around sewing people, they might object.

It's a ridiculous thing.

On that note, I was the target for an auto accident that happened while I was on the job. Some idiot fat lady wasn't watching what she was doing and after she blatantly lies to the officer and he leaves without doing anything, she makes a comeback in a day saying she was suing for damages because her massive SUV's fender was tore up and "her back hurt."

well maybe if she cut down on the fucking chocolate ice cream and donuts once in awhile.... just sayin'.

So anyway she gets a lawyer, and we never hear anything else about it. We can only guess that he laughed her out of his office considering she didn't have a case since the report CLEARLY shows that she was at fault in the first place. I never did pursue any sort of legal action myself, I just manned up and, with the help of my dad, did the repairs on my car ourselves.

Sometimes I just really hate people.
