I don't mind if they're French or Japanese.
Berserk
A bleak fairy tale about the quest of the Sisphyus-like figure Guts and his quest for vengeance against his former comrade at arms, the wannabe Nietzsche Ubermensch Griffith, which creates piles of corpses stacked unimaginably high. Amazingly detailed artwork and excellent writing by creator Kentaro Miura battles against his crazily inconsistent release schedule. It does have an official localization (by Dark Horse I believe), and scans are released by Evil Genius if I recall.
I really recomend berserk its so realistic its only manga because it comes from japan if you cannot handle gore do not read but if you can its one of the best things I have ever read I count the days between chapters being released it is so good.

Oh yeah, definitely Persepolis if you like bildungsromans. Uh, Azumanga Daioh, while I'm not a huge fan of manga, is a great read if you pick up the omnibus. Also, Scott Pilgrim is funny in a kitschy kind of way.

-Pride of Baghdad
-Bone
-Preacher
-The Boys (the superheroes in this world are corrupt assholes)
-Sin City
-Binky the Space Cat (ok, it's a kids one, but it's fun for anyone who's a cat fan, besides all the other ones I've mentioned so far except for Bone are super dark)
-Amulet (another one that younger readers can enjoy, but I'm an adult and I teared up a little. It's good stuff..don't judge me!)
-Pinocchio, Vampire Slayer
-Wormwood
-Ranklechick the Three Legged Cat

Edit: Oh good, you're cool with manga. In that case
-Petshop of Horrors
-Yotsuba
-Hellsing
-Buddha
-Full Metal Alchemist
-Fruits Basket

This is the only reason anything is manga. That's all manga IS, Japanese comics. There's no "manga" genre because there's manga from every genre. Similarly, anime is just the Japanese word for animation. People that think all anime and manga are either DBZ or porn don't know anything about the mediums.

Honestly I agree with you infact I have had arguments about this the point I was intending to make is more that it isn't a anime drawing style its more of a realistic or realism which I respect so much more as a artist I am so tired of all the anime artists out there esspecilly the ones who only do fanart even more so the ones the who do chibi art which is really just an excuss not to try and use detail and learn perportions not to mention shading.

This technically shouldn't count if you mean a Western comic, but Black Jack by Osamu Tezuka is a good one.

Basically, he's an underground doctor who charges outrageous fees (even by 1970s standards) but he's basically a one-man surgeon who can do the literal impossible. He's by no means a bad man, but he's got no problem being seen as a horrible man and definitely has no problem killing those that he thinks must die, especially if it means revenge. It's kinda strange when he considers life precious and would never consider euthanasia as a solution.

If you mean non-superhero Western comics, I'm not as knowledgeable so I'm sorry if I've given you no help.

Well it's not like all non-realistic manga/anime styles are terrible.

He also insists that doctors aren't gods while performing surgery on himself in the middle of the outback while being attacks by dingos.

Tezuka was fucking WEIRD.

I've been reading through Ex Machina recently. It's an entertaining story. It's set in an alternate version of our world, where something that took place here, didn't take place there, but everything else is there, so theres references to Superman and Batman, but they're comic characters and not real people.

It's a bit like a drama tv show, meets comics. Very good.

Skullkickers is a good comic too. If you like D&D the newest series is actually very enjoyable with great art and decent stories and just the right amount of humor.

Well they aren't official categories or anything, but whoever made the chart did a good job fetching examples and showing variety. That said I'm obligated as an Alexander Dumas fangirl to remind anyone who sees this not to watch Gankutsou.

I kill Giants was pretty good
I keep staring at the big collection edition for $40 at my comic book store every FNM and I never end up buying it but everytime I am so tempted is it that good to drop a 40?
It was definitely money good spent for me.... although I bought it a bit cheaper ;)
But still I was very pleased with it, the story and art were marvelous.
