Plasma Pistol/Pistol and taking it pretty slowly, wasn't as challenging as Mental difficulty in Serious Sam.

Play a game that you like, online. The players will present you a dynamic challenge. Find a way to add the tough ones to your friends list and play against them often till you finally beat them. Or you can cooperate with them till you find tactics that works well. Finding successful tactics is also a challenge.

2 really hard games that require you to constantly think can be ninja gaiden sigma (not really on the thinking part but the hardness is defenitly there)

and arma 2, hardest fps in the world (that isnt bullshit hard)

Naruto ninja storm 2 is an interesting in depth and difficult game aslong as you dont play on easy you should find it a challenge, i dont know why people keep mentioning halo games, number 2 was the hardest on coop legendary but single player none of them were particularly difficult, none as much as ninja gaiden2, first one was far easier.
C&C red alert 3 on hard is a challenge also, not impossible but challenging

S.T.A.L.K.E.R series. Very tough FPSRPG
Super meat boy. Very fun, frustrating, and frantic platformer.
Amnesia. Challenging to me because its a damn challenge just to turn the game on (God it scares me so...)

Catherine, on ANY difficulty. Easy will kill you too, guaranteed.

It's a hard game because it's a frantic puzzler with many different solutions for its levels. It lacks the mathematical rigidness of, say, Portal, where once you know where the portals go, you just know it forever and the next playthrough will be easy unless you forget it.

There are many different techniques, tips and tricks that you learn in-game for climbing up the wall effectively, and you'll be in later levels, learning about them and realizing "Oh! I could have done this 5 levels back and it would have been easy..."

It's not an artificial challenge. This is the real deal.

Catherine is the game the OP needs. Try it on normal first if your looking to beat yourself up. Go down to easy if you must, but even then it has a nice challenge.

Throw me in with the the people saying Catherine. I played on Easy and still died a lot. If you are really feeling masochistic then try Hard.

Halo Reach, Legendary, All skulls on.
Living hell. The entire campaign on those settings will kill you emotionally and mentally. Soul-crushing pain for the 3 weeks you'll be trying to finish Long night of Solace.

I'd suggest the Mega Man series, it's incredibly challenging and really fun.

I know you can download some of the classic Mega Man games and maybe one or two from the X series on the Wii's virtual console. And you can get Mega Man 9 and 10 on Wii Ware and PSN.
Also There are the Mega Man Classic and X Collections for the GameCube, XBox, and PS2.
Mega Man X 7 and 8 were made for the PS2 and aren't available in the Mega Man X collection.
Mega Man 8 came out on the PS2 along with Mega Man X 4, 5, and 6.
You can get the Mega Man Zero Collection on the DS.
Mega Man Powered Up for the PSP.
And the 6 original Mega Man games on the NES.

There are a few other Mega Man games out there but the Classic series, X series, and Zero series are the ones with the most "challenge" to them, I think.
