Man i'd love to try Jeet Kun Do or Krav Maga but here in Ireland it seems to be nothing BUT McDojos.
I do Karate so I'd recommend that and not everything is a MCdojo in Ireland I've been going for 13 years and I am only blue.

How about turtle hermit style? .....Just kidding...

Seriously though, I would recommend Ryukyu kempo and Jodoryu jujitsu. If you want to know anything about them just ask.
Go ahead, I would like to know more.

How did I forget about turtle hermit style? xD

This is something that exists in every martial art: assholes who think they're the absolute best at everything. I don't see why you're speaking about it as if it's only Karate that does this.
Because Karate has the majority of said assholes. Have you ever been to a tournament? Honestly, besides a few of the sensei, they all acted as if they were the next Bruce Lee. Plenty of the dojo I have attended (and ones I have simply watched) seem to think so too.

Go to someplace that does Full-Contact, and you'll see how fucking awesome it is.
I have done, and I trained in full contact Karate for a few months. Still didn't change my mind.

Zen-do-kai. It pretty much prepares you for the kind of drunken brawls that any 15 - 50 year old is likely to get themselves in to outside of a tavern or pub.

If you really don't care about self-defense, then pick one out of a hat because you think the name is pretty or whatever. There's really no reason to ask anyone's opinion. Wushu, TKD and Capoeira are acrobatic, wushu and xma have pretty "weapons," JKD or wing chun let you pretend to be Bruce Lee, etc. Try all the free classes you can get. Don't sign any contracts.

On the other hand if you want it to actually be effective your options are MUCH more limited.

Go on Youtube, look up "aliveness." Watch Matt Thornton's video and understand it. You'll know all you need to know about how to train effectively.

As has been mentioned in this thread, lots of exceptions exist, but a partial list of styles that are usually pretty good in terms of training with aliveness are:
boxing, wrestling, judo, brazilian jiujitsu, enshin, kyokushin, seidokaikan, WTF taekwondo, muay thai, sambo, and a dozen others.
A partial list of styles with bad reputations in terms of aliveness:
aikido, wing chun, most karate, most taekwondo, japanese jujutsu, most kung fu, taido, wushu, and several dozen others.

There are exceptions. I have seen aikido schools that spar, tai chi used in competition, really crappy sambo, etc. If you are "training" with a compliant partner where you both know your role, you are not going to improve your ability to handle uncontrolled situations. If you are trying to do things to a partner at full speed while avoiding him/her doing the same to you, you are probably going to improve your ability to handle uncontrolled situations, especially when they more closely resemble your training.

Oh, and if people tell you that sparring is fake because it has rules while "the street" is real because it doesn't, watch their training and see how many rules they have. "Touch my cheek to symbolize an eye gouge" is a rule. "Don't actually punch me" is a rule. "When I twist your arm this way, you fall down to simulate pain" is a rule. You'll find the people who are too deadly to spar are actually much more heavily laden with rules than any boxer or judo player.

Shotokan karate is great. So is ju-jitsu (I did the original Japanese one, I prefer it over BJJ). I also suggest bojutsu, but keep in mind it's more difficult than karate (at least for me). Kenjutsu and iaido are also always awesome.

Krav maga can be brutal, so that's effective. Also try some combat knife training, it can be useful.

I too have seen this attitude in krotty people in the United States. The sillier their training is the deadlier they think they are. I still can't help thinking I am about to mostly disagree with you though.

What was the nature of your full contact Karate training?

Can anyone recommend any interesting martial arts I could try?

I used to study Taekwondo however I stopped when I realised I had not progressed in a long time as the teacher would focus literally all his attention on a select few students and mostly ignored others.

I'm not really looking to marial arts for self defence, but rather as a hobby.

Any suggestions would be greatly apretiated.
Capoeira, if you can find a school for it would be awesome (and something I would love to learn). Really, the best thing I can suggest is look at what schools are available in your area, and go to a a couple of classes just to see if it's something you'd be interested in. Most schools will let you sit in on a class, and it gives you a good idea of what the teaching style is like.

It never is.
I dunno I've found a video...

That was hilarious. You know that dude is actually a stunt man right? By which I mean he's actually a Power Ranger: http://us.imdb.com/name/nm1355683/

So what's more likely, that the ninja school down the street is cashing in on the 80s ninja craze with crap that looks plausible to the layman, or that the Red Ranger actually knows the touch of death?

EDIT: Never mind, he wasn't even a ranger. How likely is it that a Putty knows the touch of death?
