My younger brother loves Turn-Based strategy games. For his birthday I would like to get him a new one, any ideas?

Franchises he has already played:
Final Fantasy Tactics (his favorite)
Fire Emblem
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Disgea

Good to see Disgaea on the list. I have yet to find a TBS that makes your team feel any more epic.

Look into the other Nippon Ichi games: Makai Kingdoms, Soul Nomad, La Puccelle Tactics, etc.

For others Age of Wonders comes to mind.

Can't go wrong with the Civilization series; great games, horribly addictive. There's also a really good one called Shattered Union (look it up on Steam).
The games you mentioned aren't all strategy games though, they are more in line with RPGs. I'm afraid I don't know too many of those, except perhaps for the classic Fallout games (1,2) and things like Jagged Alliance or UFO.

really depends on how retro you want to go.I usedta enjoy Breath of Fire:Dragon Quarter going back a few years now, could be worth hunting out.the extra effort means you care, right?

edit:just in case I'm thinking of the wrong one.I'm pretty sure it played a lot like FFT,but I might have confused myself with nostalgia.

A good one is Battle for Wesnoth.
For PC Fallout Tactics or Heroes of M&M
I don't know if it will be his cup of tea though.

Console?

Either way, Valkyria Chronicles and Resonance of Fate are good.

Both have elements of real-time combat. Still turn-based strategy RPG through-and-through.

Advanced Wars is a great TBS strategy series, if he has a GBA, get him Advanced Wars 2: Black Hole Rising. That game was Nintendo Hard on so many levels and took some real smarts to beat.

If you have a DS, its a toss up between Dual Strike and Days Of Ruin. If you like tons of different units, over the top tag team Commander abilities, and an insane storyline, get Dual Strike. If you like a smaller, more balanced unit roster, commander powers that dont break the game, and a "darker and edgier" story, than you will want Days of Ruin. Difficulty wise, I would say Days of Ruin is the harder of the 2 DS games, but thats just a personal opinion, they are both great games.

Theres also a Free to Play TBS game online very similar to Advanced wars called Battledex
http://battledexgame.com/welcome.php

It has tournaments, leauges, co op maps, and a really cool community. You could get him that and buy him a few booster packs and I can almost guarantee you that he would love that game as well.

depends how young he is. Galactic Civilizations II is a really fun TBS. And I personally found it easier to get into than Civilization.

Advance Wars is great, though it gets quite difficult at times. It's like Fire Emblem, but with Modern military units basically. Quite fun, regardless....

Civ 4 is SO much better than Civ 5, kinder on your wallet too. The Total War series is really good as well, and it has RTS elements in it as well.

Total War games, they are turn based strategy games, with RTS fighting, but you can sim the fights so it is fully turn based

Apart from whats already been mentioned ill add in the Langrisser games, sadly only the 1st game saw an localisation as Warsong on the MD (IIRC it was the very first english SRPG)

The 2 versions of Langrisser 2 have been fan patched SNES version has branching paths, MD is harder

Sadly the Sega Saturn Langrissers 3 - 5 remain in Japanese only.

Super Robot Wars, its turn based strategy with lots of Giant Robot shenanigans.

Valkyria Chronicles is really good if you have a ps3. Or get the second one if you have a psp.
