Is anyone else scared shitless that two of nine justices supported the law?
Not surprised in the slightest; in fact, they were the reason I was worried (other than the esteemed Clarence "dick joke" Thomas). Scalia can be a stuffy old fart but he does side with reason and freedom some times. If memory serves, he also sided with Larry Flynt. That's a pretty big deal, considering the time and Flynt's profession.

Alito and Roberts = Bush appointees, and they have consistently voted in ways that have pleased Dubya ever since they took office. Surprised I am not.

Check this out:

http://games.ign.com/articles/117/1179211p1.html

Toward the bottom of pg 1 is a quote from Gearbox president Randy Pitchford bitching about how his poor baby Duke Nukem was a target of this law and trying to make Duke seem patriotic to sell more copies.

Betcha I can find a copy of Duke for less than $10 at a Gamestop in less than a year.

Honestly, after the "Games are art" thing, I figured this was already in the bag. And...it looks as though I was right.

This is a hell of a day for everyone in favor of common sense winning out over idiotic moral crusades. Sorry, fundies - guess what? You can't ban stuff just because you find it objectionable. If you don't like it, don't look, and if you don't want your poor, pitiful crotchfruit children to partake in violent media, you might actually have to be a parent instead of expecting other people to do your job for you.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised at this. 7-2 is pretty overwhelming in the context of a case that actually makes it to the Supreme Court. It's a big, beefy middle finger to the religious wingnuts.

So, does this mean that a 10-year-old can now go out and buy Duke Nukem or any other R rated game?
No just means video games can continue to be a self-regulating industry with the ESRB, instead of an industry regulated by national law.

Unfortunately, looking at some comments on the matter on other news sites, most people are still in favor of restricting video games in such a way.
Given the ignorance of many people on just how the ESRB and retailers work, even on this very site, I sincerely doubt this is the end.
Generally the supreme court is the end for just about everything. Also what websites are you looking at I cruised over to CNN.com and everyone there seem to be in favor of this decision.
Just now I went to Fox's website to look at the comments (I know this is not a representation of everyone's opinion). The article itself was, of course, spun against games. Most of the comments were ignorant drivel, saying that a minor can just go buy violent games now, but they can't buy violent movies (see my original post for why this is false).

I'm extraordinarily pissed off at the ignorance. I'm far from being a liberal, but also far from being a conservative. I sincerely hope this is the end of this.
I went there looking for news too and there was a banner ad for world of warcraft. I laughed so hard

This isn't just important for America, this is important for video games acceptance all over the world.
I really wish you guys would stop being so bloody arrogant that you actually think this was going to have an effect on anybody but the US.
I wish you would realize that the US has the highest game sales in the world and if we were to make it a felony to sell violent games to children, it would have over-arcing consequences for the industry as a whole. Don't be so arrogant to think this doesn't affect you.

After their ruling about Westboro Baptist Church I was worried that they might fuck this decision up too! Thank God I was wrong!

Im thankful for what this will do to help gameing but lets face it, when it comes to the "masses" the words of a bunch of learned people in a big house doesnt always have the most sway. This is great but if they favoured the other way I think most here will agree that they would fight tooth and nail until it was over turned and obviously this goes both ways. This is brilliant as it will be a bottom line to slam haters with but the opposing media/people arnt going to shut up any day soon.

Still, HUZZAHS all round!

Oh god I couldn't be more happy right now. Maybe some of the crap about video games will stop now... To think my mother was for this bill.
