My buddy had a Spinal Fusion, which I think is a winner. He's actually tons of surgeries. It's kind of a running joke.

I have never had surgery, or broken a bone. Unless stitches count.

I can't do general anaesthesia... with my heart problems, it'll put me down for good. So yay.

When my wisdom teeth were being removed they told me to start counting to 10 and I got to 6 and then everything was a blank. I didn't even remember closing my eyes, I just remembered being woke up and brought to a chair to rest.

It wasn't bad until when I got home and my mom was picking up my subscription of painkillers and pain just rose up. It hurt so bad but then when I took a painkiller it was alright

I've had 2 surgeries done on my right hand for 2 boxer fractures. The first time I broke my little finger metacarpal, I had to have pins put in. The second time I had to have a titanium plate screwed on the bone. I was put under both times, and both times I woke up feeling like I want to throw up. The first time I managed to kick the feeling to the curb, but the second time I did throw up.

If you're being put under, try not to eat or drink anything prior to surgery.

Edit: Edit: I also had a tonsillectomy, but I don't remember a single detail about it. I don't even remembering having it done.

Just a little pro tip: If you're put under and wake up to find a hot nurse standing next to you, for the love of all that is decent LOOK AWAY! Because the anesthetic makes you so loopy after waking up, you'll just embarrass yourself laying there with a derp face and a boner. >_>"

The thing close to one is when I had to have my wisdom teeth taken out. I had problems form the anesthesia for at least a few months after that. I refuse to ever do anything that involves using that to put me to sleep ever again.

You were put to sleep? I was just drugged, I remember EVERYTHING...

Yeah, I thought they had to put you to sleep for that. Like, I thought it was illegal to not do it that way.

Maybe it is... I don't know, but I remember most, if not all of the surgery pretty clearly. I... won't go into details, for risk of making OP unnecessarily nervous. I live in Canada though, maybe that's different.

I'm in America, so maybe. But I don't imagine there being much difference between the two regions. Then again, I'd really have no idea for sure. lol

The only surgeries I've had were to remove my wisdom teeth and to remove a pilonidal cyst (I highly recommend NOT looking that up, BTW). I walked out of them the same day. No one keeps me in a hospital overnight.

You (or I have ) have just prompted everyone ITT to look that up.

They occur in your coccyx (sp?), which is just above your bumhole.

Cleft Palate fixed as a baby, marrow taken from my hip to replace a bone in my mouth, a nose job to fix my screwed up nose from the palate, and a hole in the roof of my mouth closed.

Cleft Palates SUCK, but at least when you go under you're high as a kite.

Broken hips, had to have huge pins placed on each side with support bars just to keep it together for 4 months. Currently, there are multiple bones missing from my hip, and I'm not medically capable of walking. Ironically, I walk everyday and continue to do everything physical I want. Doctors are incredibly perplexed.

I've had two kidney biopsies, a lumbar puncture, a tooth surgically removed, and more needles poked in me then a pin cushion. I have a kidney disease that basically causes my kidneys to not filter protein right. That is the reason for everything except the tooth. As long as your doctor is competent you have nothing to fear.

well one, i had weak pain meds so tonsil removal was 2 weeks or sheer hell for me.

but request some stronger pain killers as you will probably need it.

not to mention the 2 knee surgeries and a shoulder surgery within a year. but they gave me better stuff for that.

My so called "friend" broke my jaw by sucker punching me from behind and I had to have surgery to set the bone and take out one of my wisdom teeth because it went directly through the root. Thankfully, I didn't need to have it wired shut. I had to eat eggs and other soft foods for like 3 months and the right side of my tongue is still numb.

Then early last year, I got a hernia and had to have surgery to put my intestines back into my abdomen. The pain from my jaw was bad, but it was nothing compared to the pain I felt when I sneezed. It felt like my abs were on fire.

I am so grateful for morphine and vicodin.

I've had surgery one time in my life. It went smoothly. I would have recovered beautifully, except I sort of ignored a lot of the doctors advice about things I wasn't supposed to do immediately after the surgery, and quite frankly I've needed a redo for many years now.

All 4 wisdom teeth taken out when I was 20.
Had a lot of vicodin and the most bland meal plan in me for the next 3 days or so

Besides that, no other surgeries, only been hospitalized once- never have needed surgery.

So, since I'm going in for a tonsillectomy in ten hours, I'm a little on the nervous side. I've decided that the best way to cure this would be to ask you all about it.

How about it, my fellow Escapists? Have you had any surgeries in the past? What were they like?

I'd say it's pretty normal to be nervous.
However, tonsillectomies are extraordinarily routine. The odds of anything going wrong are insanely low. Just follow the post operation instructions the doctor gives you and you'll be fine. Plus you get to eat a lot of ice cream, how awesome is that?

I've had a few surgeries. I was mostly nervous about the needle for the sleepytime drugs (because I'm really, really terrified of needles).

Most of my surgeries were for cyst removal, but I also had one where I had eight teeth removed (all four of my wisdom teeth and then four other teeth closer to the front) before I got my braces put on.

But my doctors were usually quite nice (aside from one trying to jam a popsicle into my mouth before I'd even woken up all the way) and I never suffered any kind of complications. Also, I usually got the room to myself and the food at our local hospital is pretty good (or at least the vegetarian meal I had was good).

They'll basically just knock you out and you'll wake up hours later with your tonsils gone. I've never had your procedure done before, but I imagine that your throat will be sore for a few days to a little over a week. They'll keep an eye on your for a little bit to make sure there are no complications, and then they'll discharge you with some directions that you'll have to follow. You'll probably have to check back a couple of weeks later so that they can check your progress.

As long as your in good health there shouldn't be anything to worry about, the surgery is routine. There is a risk with any surgery but that's usually with the anaesthetic but you generally need some major health problems for that to become an issue.

I've had one surgery. No, I won't say what the surgery was for. It's kinda private, embarrassing, and much much worse than a tonsillectomy. But if you really must know, then I might say what my surgery was.

Never had any surgeries. Very little experience with doctors at all. Besides for getting birth control pills, last time I went to the doctors would have been........................... when I broke my toe (went because I was arguing with mom, she said it was dislocated but I didn't want her to try and undislocate if it was actually broken which it totally was) about 3 years ago.
