Sushi and you

Well the very first one was some employee had samples on her tray in this shopping centre (Fridge). I just took a fish one.

The proper introduction of Sushi was when I visit my brothe down in London and the first thing we did when I arrived was heading to a sushi place (it was lunch time). Eating them was odd at first (so raw) but I soon to grown to liked it.

Sadly it has been a while since I had one since my parent don't liked sushi meaning no sushi for us. Ok sure the city I sometime visit has now got a sushi place but as we all know sushi are expensice and that place is always busy (huge queue to get in)!

Never had sushi. Don't like any fish though, aside from fishsticks drowned in ketchup. So yeah, no interest in trying sushi either.

Well, I might try those still moving octopus tentacle things, just for bragging right and the ick factor. I kinda like putting gross stuff in my mouth... (ladies...

Also, I don't think I've ever even seen a place that might sell sushi. Though I haven't been looking.

I'm very fond of sushi, as well as sashimi. Tempura isn't really my thing, though.

Born and raised in Vancouver, and have lived my entire life in coastal BC... which I would have to guess is about as full of sushi as any place outside of Japan. Seriously, I can think of at least five different sushi restaurants that I have been to here in Victoria alone. Also two Japanese grocery stores with pretty good sushi... and just about all the major grocery stores here even have okay sushi. For anyone who hasn't been introduced to it... it's almost shockingly banal here. Except of course that it remains delicious.

So yeah, I love it, but can't remember when I would have first had it. That memory is lost to the depths of time. I do remember that there was some served after my Dad's wedding in Hawaii, which was like 12 years ago. That wasn't the first time I had sushi but I think it was the first time I had sushi with raw salmon and tuna in it.

I do in fact usually prefer straight sashimi to sushi rolls or even nigiri though. Tuna is really freakin' amazing. I mean pacific salmon is just about the best fish cooked, but when eaten raw tuna wins no contest.

As far as I can remember I have always loved it though, but then I have eaten many different types of sea food all my life and pretty much always loved them all. From salmon to oysters, from ahi tuna to calamari, also eels, urchins, octopus, soft shelled crabs, lobsters, mussels, prawns, etc.

Can you tell I'm hungry?

Probably around 2006 or something, I went to an asian restaurant with my father and they happened to have sushi in their buffet.
Now I gobble that shit up like it's candy because IT IS CANDY, ONLY BETTER.

Went to a vaguely Asian restaurant about 5 years ago and they had sushi on the menu, so I decided to try it. Might have been the quality of the sushi, but I didn't much like it. It didn't taste awful, but not something I feel I need more of.

My area of Aus had a very heavy asian multiculture so i had many types of food easily available.
Combined with living at the ocean front we had an excellent supply of fresh fish.

I love sushi, Japanese or Western, I love it to bits. I'll probably eat almost any kind of sushi or sashimi. It's great with Miso soup as well. Mmmmm, numnumnumnumnumnumnum. The western stuff like the California or Alaskan roll generally has more ingredients and much higher calories, but it sure is goooood.

Tea and sake are a fine complement to such a marvellous meal. There were a few places in Hong Kong where you could wander in through the curtained doorway to be greeted by as lively bellow from the blade-wielding chefs. There was even one restaurant I remember that had little boats to carry the sushi, before they changed the system to conveyor belts instead.

My dad brought some home once when I was a kid.

Haven't eaten the stuff since.

It was okay, I didn't dislike it, but it wasn't tasty enough to compel me to go looking for more.

2001, California. Was introduced to Sushi, edamame and tempura all at the same time. 1000 kinds of win there. I don't remember the place I went to, just the person I went with.

I can't remember when I first tried sushi, but it was at least 15 years ago. I didn't try decent sushi/sashimi until I was around 20, however and uggghhh the difference.

Nowadays I will eat sushi at least a couple of times a month. I'd eat it every day if it weren't so expensive. I'm lucky enough to live in London that access the sushi is easy.

In 7th grade my team of four won the quiz contest that my teacher held, he offered to brin us pizza or sushi. We were an adventurous group so he brought in a sushi boat from a place that had opened up and it was delicious. It was a little difficult to get until I got my first job and my first car since my parents hate it but now I eat it about once a week.

The first time was with my Japanese class I believe, back in 2000-2001. I was 17-18 years old. Our sensei would occasionally take us out for sushi or to go to Stockholm and visit a few of the Japanese shops there. It was great fun =)

Tried some at a Japanese restaurant once. Wasn't a fan. Not the most thrilling tale I've ever told.

I'm such a sushi snob. The supermarket brands, Yo! Sushi, Wasabi: they just don't cut it. I've had fresh sushi in Japan, and I like to order it in actual Japanese restaurants, but I don't buy it unless I think it's going to be good.

I prefer sashimi though. More of a meal.

My uncle took me to a sushi place in my teens when I was visiting him in Miami.

Didn't care for it. At all. I don't like fish to begin with, and I just couldn't stand the taste or the texture.

So, if there's ever an Escapist sushi buffet, then you guys can have my share. I'll stick to the cheeseburgers like the fat generic American that I am.

This was technically the second or third time I ate sushi, but its a good story so I'll use this thread as an excuse to tell it.

Anyway back in 2000 I had my first real job working for a major American IT firm which has a small office in the UK. A few months after I started work, the tech crunch hit and the US head office decided to close the UK branch, making everyone there redundant. Now, I didn't really mind as I hadn't been there that long, but my boss was really pissed. Before the news landed, we'd booked ourselves into a big tech conference in London. I assumed it would be cancelled but my boss was very clear "No one in America has told us to cancel our tickets, lets go, have fun and get some CV points which we'll going to need soon". Anyway this ended with us going to the best sushi restaurant in Mayfair and the bill ended up at about 80-100 quid per head all on the company tab. As the guy who handled accounts for us was also getting laid off the bill got reimbursed no problem.

I'm not going to try defending this story morally, but damn that was good sushi...

Also I got to see Douglas Adams give a talk at the conference shortly before he died, so I'm very glad I went.

I got to eat it when going to university first and a few times since then.
Considering all the praise here I apparently just haven't had one that is properly done. Because all I ever got was unseasoned fish wrapped in unseasoned rice and some plant skin on top... didn't taste like anything really, but wait you must dip it in sauce... well then I'm just tasting the sauce, could just have some rice with sauce then.

The Wegmans out by me started serving sushi a couple years ago. I don't eat meat, but the vegetarian variety was lovely. I'd eat it a lot more often if I didn't have to drive out there to get it. (And if it was a bit cheaper.)

I tried sushi when I was in Korea(yes, I know it's Japanese) and it was one of the few foods from that part of the world I still ate afterwards. It's much better than cow's blood soup and kimchi.
