I tried sushi when I was in Korea(yes, I know it's Japanese) and it was one of the few foods from that part of the world I still ate afterwards. It's much better than cow's blood soup and kimchi.

I've only just recently gotten into sushi. It's now my new sort of food of the moment. I can probably resist other stuff if I can't afford it but it's very rare I'll resist sushi.

As for when I got introduced to it? Well, if you count the beginner's Cali Roll, I was probably pretty young. Nothing special. Bought some from a store. But I've always wanted to actually try the raw stuff.

So I went to a place that was always there in my downtown square, ate some, fell hard. That couldn't have been more than like a year ago. Maybe even less. I just... I want it all.

All the sushi varieties. Every one.

When I was visiting friends in Montreal last year I had sushi a couple of times, and while I thought it was OK, I am not compelled to seek it out, and I have recently found out that I am intolerant to gluten but my friends have found a paleo/gluten free recipe to replace the rice with avocado that I may try out sometime.

We always had really terrible sushi at university, so I didn't get the urge to try it until I went on holiday to New York. Had some amazing sushi there, came back and found to my delight that some better places were just opening.

Now I live about 5 minutes from a place that serves up amazing rolls and sashimi, so we go there every so often.

I grew up in the country, so sushi was not available to me in any way until I moved out of the house when I was 17. When I moved to the city, it was in a predominantly Haitian and Italian neighborhood, so there weren't any sushi shops there either. One day on the way home from school, I stopped at a convenience store for a sandwich, saw sushi platters in one of the fridges and said "hey, why not?".

Of course, I knew that convenience stores are not the place to buy sushi and that I'd find much better in actual restaurants downtown, but the fish wasn't discolored and didn't smell, so there was no harm trying it. I liked it enough to try real fresh sushi the next time I went downtown, and have been eating it once or twice a month since. I love the stuff.

Anime! :p

OT: I remember this one Japanese restaurant that used to be pretty close to where I used to live back in the day... Since I was a huge fan of shrimp, I ended up trying out this one sushi roll that, supposedly, tasted like shrimp wrapped up in rice and seaweed...

Long story short, it didn't...

And then I tried sashimi some time later, which started my long-term indifference to sushi in general...

The end... :p

Tried sushi many years ago at a small sushi shop at a shopping center as I'd always been interested in Japanese food. Now I live in Japan. Though to be honest, I probably eat more onigiri and regular bento than sushi, these things you can get for cheap and are more common. And then there's the other treats you can find in convenience stores, do you guys have any idea how awesome octopus and squid jerky is?

There is this buffet restaurant my family has gone to quite a few times over the years that mainly serves Chinese food and food inspired by such, but also has a decent little selection of sushi they put out, mainly the made for the West salmon and crab rolls but also at times a small amount of the stuff actually made and eaten in Japan.

It's pretty good to my tastes. Now just need to try more of the original recipes.

I came across sushi when my dad brought a pack home the food store we go to. We've occasionally been to Sushi restaurants but we mostly buy packs from Super Store.

My friend was like "OMG put this eel in your mouth" and I did. It was magical, feeling that slimy long eel go down my throat....errrr and that is how I first had sushi.

Well, back in high school, I had a lot of friends that were into anime and manga before I even knew what anime and manga was (though previously mentioned, I actually did watch anime when I was a child; I just didn't know that it was called anime). Like so many individuals who try to get into everything related to an art form/media/fan base, etc. we all decided to go out for sushi one day.

It was a local Japanese sushi bar that I hadn't noticed before and I was excited to try something new. We were a small group, and none of us had sushi before, so naturally we got a big entree with a little of everything to try out. The first thing I had were California Rolls and I instantly loved it. I then moved on to Tempura Rolls and I loved it even more so than the California Rolls. I wanted to take a risk with the unagi because I wasn't sure that I would like it, but when I consumed it, I instantly fell in love with unagi.

Now anytime I go out for sushi, I order the most interesting and unique entree with unagi and just take that. Price is no problem.

I was very young when I had sushi, I wound up getting food poisoning from it so I would throw up whenever I ate sushi. I think it was only about a year ago when I stopped doing that. It tastes pretty good.

Raw meat? No thanks. If the cook screws up, enjoy your parasites.

And lets be honest, people DO screw up from time to time.

If the cook screws up the raw... what?

What you are describing is an issue of unsanitary handling, and if that's the case, you are in just as much danger eating a salad, so you should probably just not eat there. I've been eating sushi and sashimi on a regular basis in Japan for 7 years and have never gotten sick nor heard of anyone else getting sick from eating the stuff(unless they were allergic).

Anyway, I ate it for the first time at a sushi place near Fairchild AFB in Washington state. Now I live less than a 5 minute walk away from a pretty good sushi-go-round, and I'm eating there with a friend for lunch in an hour. Yum!

To begin with, sushi doesn't always contain raw fish. Sashimi is always raw fish, not sushi. Also, the problem with this thinking is that it's actually less of an issue for raw fish. Fish is naturally salty, and inhibits the growth of any nasties that will make you sick far better than any other kind of meat (for a time anyway). You may have noticed that nearly all meats intended to be eaten raw are seafood as opposed to chicken.

There's also very little for the chef to screw up on. Provided it's been handled correctly from when it was caught to arriving and is fresh (which, being the while appeal of raw fish, goes without saying) everything should go smoothly. I and many of my friends have been eating raw fish for years and never gotten sick. I did get food poisoning from a hamburger once though, so point sushi :p
