So, after much trying to figure out why swearing is considered bad, I have failed. Everyone who tells me to stop hasn't really come up with a reason other than is apparently reduces your vocabulary, despite me knowing vastly more words than they do.
Escapists, I turn to you know, why is swearing so bad?

It's yet another arbitrary social standard. I don't know why swearing is bad either. Consider it X-treme language used to punctuate statements and indicate emotion that other words can't.

Personally, I just think excessive swearing just sounds stupid. "Oh, that douche *yada yada yada* fucking shit *yada*" You can use it when you're pissed or whatever, but cursing in every sentence sounds retarded (apologies to anyone who takes offense to that).

Fuck them! Who cares what they think!

But I don't know, most "bad" words originated centuries ago and at the time were not considered taboo until more modern times. People are just becoming more sensitive, our lives are alot easier then previous generations so without some sort of struggle or danger we look for things to worry about... like bad language and being all PC.

Fucking bullshit. I just like cussing.

Basically swearing can make an ordinary sentance more effective. Such as, Be quiet please or SHUT YOUR FUCKING FLAPPING VAGINA MOUTH YOU ****. I know which one i'm more likely to obey.

originally it was made socially bad to protect women and children from the "rough language" of men. but as I now know women who will swear a blue streak a mile long at the drop of a hat, I fail to see why we would continue with it being a taboo.

but it would still feel weird to swear in front of my grandma....

I suppose because many swears either reference sex, human genetalia, discriminatory names, etc. But there are plenty of equal or worse non-swears out there, so why we should single out particular words and forbid their usage is beyond me.

Although too much swearing makes one seem unintelligent. There many more creative ways to express anger or disgust, but "fuck" has become so all-purpose it's hard not to fall back on. I can't respect a troll who says "fuck" twice per sentence. They never sound very smart.

Because of the connotations it carries. People associate them with very negative strong emotions. It's not arbitrary, it's part of communication. It is an efficient method of portraying how you feel. If there were no curse words, then people wouldn't be to just say "F*** you!" They would have to say something along the lines of "You make me very upset and I hope you die in a fire!" Conveys pretty much the same sentiment but one is much easier, no?

Like I said, simply an efficient method of communication. The problem with using curse words in common conversation is that hearing them still calls up the same associations, (the anger, dislike, etc), and it can feel to the person hearing it that they're being attacked, even when they know they're not, and that makes them uncomfortable.

The vocabulary thing is actually a logical fallacy. "Association doesn't equal correlation." A lot of dumb people with small vocabularies use swear words often in order to fill in the gaps in their conversations. But they don't have small vocabularies because they swear a lot, they swear a lot because they have small vocabularies.

Hope that cleared it up for you.

It's strange, I must say 'fuck' is not long a taboo word, also crap is very common and doesn't seem to hold that shock vaule it once had.
I don't think swearing is terrible if that's what your getting at

There is nothing inherently wrong with swearing, it is a useful way to convey emotion. Since it does convey emotions it can even be used artistically.

I think there are two ways to use swearing. One, you can use it to convey frustration or anger over a situation (ex. My damn TV won't turn on!). Two, you can direct it at someone else (ex. Fuck you!). The former isn't so bad just don't overuse it or it becomes meaningless. The latter is the more sensitive topic. Directing curse words at others conveys the strength of your emotions on the matter. The big rule here is just to also add some actual content to your remark.

instead of just "Fuck you!"

say "[instert whatever arguement here] So fuck you!"

Its surely not that simple either but there are my thoughts as far as I've taken them.

They were developed as ways to curse or damn a person if they were performing deviant or heretical practices and should not be taken lightly. Except on Live, PSN, or Steam. Then fire away to your heart's content. Not my fault if you get booted.

Hahaha my thoughts exactly.

Swearing is not that big of an issue, it all comes down to personal feeling. Yes some people do it complusively, but it mostly how they say it. If someone swears casually in a sentence or two then it's not bad. But when some people swear repeatedly it's a sign that the person has strong negative emotions. And that's not bad in any way.

As for me they say I curse too much at work. Well what the fuck do they fucking want me to do? I'm always miserable as shit at work and extremely angry and pisses, and I reflect that in my abusive language.

Eh, supposedly people throw cursing and swearing in with being unsophisticated, as why they call it sailor talk, as in the talk of commoners, blue collar people. But frankly, that's an outdated sort of notion that should've been buried 50 years ago, at least.

So, in short, I say to FUCK that shit. Swearing is a means of conveying emphasis when "Darn", "Rats", and "Crap" just won't cut it.

Honestly because I think endless cursing especially when you are detailing an argument or point just undermines your position and makes you look less intelligent because you are using commonly used words intended to give off a shock value. Swearing has its uses but should not be a crutch used all the time because swearing can cause offence which causes annoyance which eventually escalates into flame wars, hence killing conversation on the webs. So I for one am against swearing.
