What did Wolfram post that was ban-worthy?
I think they counted his post as advertising because it was a link to his article or something.

Bit of a shitty reason to suspend someone really, it was all on topic.
Yeah, I'm not a regular poster to these forums, but that mod must of had some sort of U.S. Homeland Security internet conduct standard to ban someone for that.

OT: I'm not partial to racing games, but Sonic Generations has had me grinding my teeth to get a faster speed each time, might be something to try?

NFS Most Wanted, and Underground 1 and 2 maybe. Most Wanted did the pursuit system best in my opinion, and I love playing it again and again ^.^ Loved the city too

Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli is pretty awesome. I had it on the PS2, but it must be glorious in HD. There's also a new sim coming to the PSN, I don't know the name. Looks a bit lower-res but quite realistic.

GRID is awesome, it's not too realistic but not too arcadey either. Every car is just so fucking satisfying to drive. That, combined with the awesome sound, graphics, racing tracks and cockpit view make it one of the best racing games I've played.
Yes, GRID is definitely a very good choice. Like he said, the driving physics are extremely satisfying, and one cool thing about the game is that the replays are actually really fun to watch due to the clever camera placement, and the great soundtrack.

I'd say Forza 4 is pretty sweet.
He's looking for a game on the PS3. Forza is an XBOX exclusive title.

OT: I'd have to say gt5 as well. Shift 2 is alright, and the drifting in it was much improved over the previous games, but the handling of the supercars is a little... off.

I played a lot of Burnout: Paradise during the free month of VIP we got after the hack and thought it was pretty damn fun. Since I'm not a fan of racing games I guess that's a plus.
It's already been mentioned, but unfortunetly it's all I got.

I had fun with Split/Second myself, though it kinda got old after they had you running the same tracks over and over. I also enjoyed Blur. Driver: San Fransico is a bit of a racing game and I'm having fun with it. Though I don't like how it forces those stupid dares out after every chapter.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, much better than The Run.

Burnout: Paradise, honestly IMO one of the best online experiences going!

Driver: San Francisco if you want crazy carnage, a fun storyline and just a good time all round.

I'd go with WipeoutHD. It's cheap, great racing and as for realism, who knows maybe it is super realistic. Maybe that's how racing will be in the future. You don't know. Shut up.

EDIT: Isn't there a cheap version of GT5 that's just the arcade quick race stuff? If there is maybe try that.
I'd recommend Wipeout HD as well. Very fun arcade style racing game, and quite cheap despite being pretty well filled with content. Well worth the purchase.

And I believe the GT game you're thinking of is GT5: Prologue. It's got far fewer cars, I believe coming in around 90 or so if memory serves, and there's less options to customize the cars that are there, but I would honestly recommend it over GT5 myself for the simple reason that the actual driving and race gameplay was flatout better than GT5. GT5 had a disappointing lack of races considering how long it was in development, added a stupid leveling system that made the end game utterly unbearable, and made money a bit too difficult to come by. The AI also didn't get any real improvements from Prologue, and there were so few restrictions on races that it made finding a challenge in the game difficult (which is admittedly a problem with most GT titles).

But Prologue had far more restrictions on what you could enter into races, and the challenge was at a much better level because of it, and because of the lack of customization options. You actually had to get better to beat a lot of the later races, not simply buy/win a better car and power your way to victory like you can do in 90% of GT5.

Overall it was a much more streamlined and rewarding racing experience. If you don't mind not having the huge car roster then get Prologue. If you want the huge car roster, dust off your PS2 (or buy one if you haven't already) and go find GT4, because GT5 is not worth the money unless you want to play online.

Except the OP wants it on PS3, so that rules out GTR2 and anything by SiMBiN, indeed any hard core sim at all.

Anyway OP the most sim like offering I can think of is F1 2011, a definite improvement on 2010, its price (on PC anyway) drops dramatically after release because it is such a niche title. If you like some realism and shaving thousandths of a second off you lap then F1 2011 may be for you.

Midnight Club: Los Angeles.

I don't know how it hasn't been posted yet, but seriously check it out. Insane customization, great atmosphere, great controls. It is pretty much Fast and Furious the game. You know the racing parts of Fast and Furious? Yeah, that is this game. You race in "underground" street racing circuits thus cops are a problem, and you do so for money and pink slips alike. Damages to your car must be repaired, it uses a reputation system for content unlocking. Has a vast map that races use for street racing. I mean, its made by Rockstar.

Perceived Cons:
It does use rubber-banding which is a personal taste thing, I don't find it an issue but some do. It's there to keep the race exciting from beginning to end.
Some complain it is too hard, maybe they just suck at racing games, I don't know. I find it challenging but not overbearing.
Some complain about the urban dialogue and T-mobile sidekick feature, I think it adds more to the game based on what it was trying to capture.

It's my favorite racing game by far. GT5 is OK, NFS is ok, nothing beats this game though for street racing.

i would prefer more realistic racing games but thanks! :)
GT5 has been around for ever now, you should be able to pick it up fairly cheap. While the AI is dishwater-dull, online is actually pretty good fun. The game has been around long enough now that the community mainly consists of those who are in the game for the long haul and actually want to race like minded competitors. In other words, the rammers have all long since fucked off.

F1 2011 can be picked up fairly cheap too - it was a disaster on the PS3 at launch and bombed. Every branch of GAME I went to around mid-november had tons of the fucking thing pre-owned. The thing is, they've actually patched it up to a pretty decent standard now. Do be sure to look up the tyre bug they missed though. It's not a game-breaker - if you know it's there and how to work around it!

Need for Speed: Shift Unleashed 2 probably sits about halfway between realistic and arcade. The developer really wanted to go for realism, but EA said "no". It shows, with a very "hybrid" handling system that sometimes feels simple, and other times leaves you fighting against the car with no real idea what the problem is.

As for The Run? Shite. Hot Pursuit is still head and shoulders the best PS3 NFS to date.

Other racers worth a look:

Driver San Francisco - a driving game as opposed to a straight racer, but still good fun for a week or so.

F1: Championship Edition - a bit long in the tooth now, and with a woefully out of date driver and team line up. Still a fucking ace game though, with a good difficulty curve and interactive pitstops that can win or lose the race if the mechanics fumble a tyre change because you fucked up the QTE. And this was before the term "QTE" had even been invented. And it was actually fairly demanding compared to today's "interactive cutscenes" that QTE's have become.

WRC - Now I know it didn't do well critically. But here's the thing - it lost a lot of marks for a lack of spit and polish. I only have last year's edition to go by, but I believe this years is not significantly different. Now, although it lacks a bit of shine, everyone knows that rally cars are not supposed to shine. They are supposed to leap grunting and snorting across yumps and through streams and to be utterly covered in filth and muck. If you don't get mud on the roof, you are DOING IT WRONG! And that is where WRC is actually pretty damn good once you get to grips with setting up the car. It's such a demanding task to thread your 300bhp 4WD monster through narrow, twisty gravel and mud paths with trees and rocks lining the way as opposed to half a mile of gravel and some nice comfy tyres to end up in. Seriously, fuck the critics - it will cost you like £10 or something, and I guarantee that if you like a hard, challenging car game that has a go at being serious, then you will definitely get your £10 worth.

Wipeout - It's old. It's ancient. The franchise goes back to the launch of the PlayStation (back before it was called PSOne or PSX or PS-whateverthefuck). But it's still brilliant fun. It can be frustrating and hard as nails as you move to the faster, high tier races, but that's how any game should be. Work for those trophies, motherfuckers!! And the online community is still healthy(ish) after Sony gave the game away on the back of the PSN hack-a-thon.

DIRT has specifically not been mentioned, because the only one I have is the original Colin McRae Dirt. I suspect the series has moved on leaps and bounds, and I remember it being pretty good fun, but leaving me unsure as to whether I was supposed to take it seriously or approach it as a pure arcade racer?

Best thing to do? Rent (or borrow from mates) a few before deciding which one you are most likely to sink serious time into before buying. A couple may even have demo's on PSN. I know there are still F1:CE and GT5 playables on there. A couple of months back anyway. Maybe.

Have fun whichever you pick, and I may even bump into you online. Only because my mirrors were too small though...!

[EDIT]: How the FUCK did I forget Burnout Paradise? 'Tis truly awesome.

All I've heard is that the PS3 version looks and plays like shit compared to F1 2010.

It was. It was utter pish on launch, and it's still not the prettiest racer in the world. Now, I personally thought it improved after the patches. Some disagree. There are a couple of hundred pages of forum rage about this over at the CM forums but my opinion, at the end of the day, is that the game is actually pretty good now. Far from perfect, but I've actually had a ton of fun with it.

Probably helps to be an F1 fan to get so into it though. If you aren't an F1 fan then you might want to look elsewhere.

The racing is actually really good at the higher levels, but it helps to have a basic understanding of how Formula 1 racing actually works as the game doesn't give you much help. It assumes it's being played by people who know how to sort out the loose rear end on an F1 car, or who know how to work a tyre strategy up for a weekend of performance tests on the Friday, and Grand Prix racing on the Saturday and Sunday. If you are now wondering what the fuck I just said, then you might get pissed off real quick at this game.

If you want a good, honest challenge that will last you ages though, then it's definitely a contender.
