Speaking of mmos, hows WAR doing? I haven't heard from them after they got walloped by blizzard outselling them 4 times over on release day.

Or AoC for that matter.

Erm, WAR is doing reasonably well I think. They're about to release two of the classes they held back at release, and have what seems like a pretty fun in game hype going on over it.

AoC is following Tab Rasa methinks.

Wow. Is this the shortest-lived commercial MMORPG?
Not mmore than a year after its release its shut down.

That's just sad.
but I guess they had it coming...

I think that is a ploy, and the give was the "free for the last month" part. If you get to play for free for one month, then take it away, a lot of people will want to play and then it will be popular again. Very sneaky
Nah, I played it when it launched, it doesn't have that type of staying power.

It wasn't a bad game, it's just the quest spacing was weird and there was no reason to party with anyone. Doing instances by yourself doesn't warrant a monthly fee.

I don't regeret getting the limited edition of it though, amazon had it for sale cheaper than the regular version, kind of interesting because when I got the game it was only about a month old.

This is a sad thing.

Whether or not you played Tabula Rasa, it just doesn't bode well for massive online games. This will cause more game companies to think twice before trying to compete with something like World of Warcraft. It doesn't matter how innovative your game idea might be if it can't get published due to fear of the competition.

This will also cause the informed gamer to think twice about picking up a game that requires online play. Are the servers going to be closed after a short amount of time? Will I be able to reinstall this game a year from now and play it? I saw Hellgate London coming after playing the beta, and I refused to buy it (they got $5 from me for the preorder because my friend said it was going to be SO AWESOME).

Asheron's Call 2 (while Asheron's Call 1 was STILL going)
Auto Assault
Earth and Beyond
Hellgate London

All of those seemed to close after a relatively short time. I remember when Auto Assault and Asheron's Call 2 were still sitting on store shelves - little did the general game buyer know that the servers have already been shut down rendering the games unplayable! You can still find copies of Hellgate London if you look around a bit.

I've always been a big fan of the MMO genre, but now I'm starting to wonder what the point is. Why invest all of that time into an online game...sometimes hundreds of hours...if the servers will just eventually be shut down one day? What is the point of that?
That is one of the reasons I want to stay away from them. My current job I'm away for months at a time; it's kind of a waste to be paying monthly for something I can't use. Why put so much investment into something only to have it wiped out? I don't want to have to start over.

I was impressed that my WoW characters were still available after about 2 years away from it. I really thought they would have wiped them out. I ended up giving my account to a guy that reactivated it.

I think if the majority of game companies could have their way, they would rather have the "pay to play" method so they have a constant income off of a game. There's also the incentive to keep paying when you're not playing just so your hard work has not gone to waste. It's a horrible cycle.

Eventually there is going to be another MMORPG out that I won't be able to resist, and I know I'll be drawn into this once again. I just hope I don't gamble on the wrong game and play to an early server shut down.

I've never understood why the companies that shut down their servers don't release their server software as a stand-alone product. Surely just about everyone that owns the client would jump at the chance to run their own server and tweak the game as they see fit.

What I would like is an MMOG (G - game (of any sort)) is a MMORTS, like EndWar's online campaign, but a) on the PC, and b) maybe with a whole war on a 'single map'! But I don't think b) is feasible...yet.

Alternatively, a MMOFPS other than World War 2 online (seriously, games that obsess with realism at the cost of gameplay annoy me).

Or something like Civ.

Or an MMORPG that actually has the players building homes and stuff (that wierd upcoming one, maybe: http://www.quelsolaar.com/ - confusing website, but given its being programmed by 1 guy, its interesting to see how this one pans out)

I wouldn't say "ploy" - more like good thinking - if you've gotta shut down an MMO, why not hook them onto your successful ones?

I'd like an MMO shooter like Planetside... except have it easier to get into the action and have the world be smaller.

Alternatively I'd like a sandbox MMO along the lines of that brilliant bit of Vaporware known as Darkfall where player actions determine what's going on. I'd get EVE as it seems to be that... except I don't like the whole flying spaceships dynamic, I'd rather be my character not a spacecraft.

Speaking of Yahtzee, what happened to his review of Tabula Rasa? I've heard that a lot of people think it to be one of the best he has done, but it seems to have been completely removed, forum posts and all.

I wouldn't keep playing and paying for a game that I knew was gunna be shut down, and from their move, they knew that most other people wouldn't either. The game would die faster.

Also, are private or 3rd party servers not an option for those who wish to play the game further?
