Wondering if there has been a game made where you are a Commander of a single ship and you well fight other ships, while managing fuel, damage control, weapons, mine emplacements, drones, maneuvering, mutiny etc...
I just watched the new Mechwarrior reveal and the trailer comes in the same ballpark as to what I'm talking about with the tactical readouts and such in first person, except I want that in space. I want to be Captain Keyes fighting offf the Covenant above Halo, I want to do that stuff, maybe I'm just ranting, but wondering if there's a game anything like this.

EVE online is sort of like that, but not really. It is rather strategic sometimes, though, I guess. Just depends on your play style.

The only game I know of that was like that were the Star Trek Academy series, albeit barely, maybe Tachyon: the Fringe. But most space games are strategic in nature. Sins of a Solar Empire being the most prominent modern space game as far as I know.

Space Empires V lets you control a whole race, with the main point being to take your ships and take over the other races in the universe. The ship portions are almost exactly like you describe.

I think he's talking more like you control one ship, period. Not strategic. More like a flight sim sorta thing, but in a massive ship.

Freespace or Freelancer?
damn, beat me to it.

yeah I'd say freelancer.
Additional to FreeLancer: Freelancer 2 for the xbox 360 was cancelled 6 months ago for unknown reasons :( I just finished the first one.

OP: Anyway, if you want a game like the one you described, I'd recommend most of the old games.
Star Trek: Star Fleet Command was a good one.

Nexus: The Jupite Incident. A very good tactical space sim. A bit on the hard side, but quite satisfying. I reccomend you try it.

A game like that wouldn't sell well in today's market. A game like that would appeals to your hardcore strategy/sim players, which make up a very small percentage of gamers.

I for one would love to see a game like that.

For an rts go with SW empire at war (best with the expansion).
For a space sim I've only played freespace 2
Edit: Actually your idea of controlling a larger ship sounds quite good too.

Yes actually, there is a game like that. Unfortunately it's really really bad. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Combat

Sins of a solar empire might quench your thirst.

Homeworld:

(has a sequel too)
Or Haegemonia:

(has add-on pack too)

Both were fun games as I recall and seem to fit your bill.

I was going to post this. I read a good review for it where I am convinced now the reviewer was huffing paint. It is hands down the worst game I ever played and the cd is currently a coaster for the coffee I am drinking right now.

The game your describing is pretty much my dream game and the closest I ever came to playing it was an old FPS called Mace Griffin bounty hunter. It mixed FPS with space combat and the beauty was you could walk around your ship while in space. In reality it was no where near as cool as it sounds. I've always wanted the kind of game where if your ship takes too many hits you have to run around Han Solo style repairing it or repelling boarders. I would say this would make a good Firefly game but I would just make everyone here sad.

I'm going to suggest X3: Reunion on this one. If you get into it enough you can control a full fleet of ships and manage weapons etc. It has freeform gameplay but it's a huge commitment of playtime.
And if someone made a Battlestar Galactica mod for it where you traveling across the universe looking for food and fuel while escaping the Cylons I would appreciate it.

Sorry I got carried away.

so far this is the closest, but correct me if I'm wrong, the gameplay looks more like star wars battlefront 2 rather than strategy.

If you could find a copy of it and get it to run on your computer, which is a pain but not impossible then I would suggest Imperium Galactica. It has some of what your talking about albeit not to the same degree of control.

Imperium Galactica 3 focused on a single starship, IIRC. Masters of Orion 3 might have as well.

I'm a little fuzzy on both though, I'm afraid. I played IG2 and MOO2, but, not the third iteration in either series.

There is Homeworld and Homeworld 2, a spaceship RTS.

It revolves around gathering resources and building various fighter wings within the Mothership (Pride of Hiigara for Homeworld 2) and unleashing them en mass against the enemy.

It isn't the single ship vs multiple enemies game you are looking for bit it comes close I think. Besides, it's the only spaceship vs spaceship game that I can think of aside from Star Wars: X wing.

Edit: Oh right I forgot, Star Trek...er, games.

I very much like the sound of this, but I don't think this has been done in the whole "walking around a simulated interactive bridge" way.
