If you could find a copy of it and get it to run on your computer, which is a pain but not impossible then I would suggest Imperium Galactica. It has some of what your talking about albeit not to the same degree of control.
Imperium Galactica 3 focused on a single starship, IIRC. Masters of Orion 3 might have as well.

I'm a little fuzzy on both though, I'm afraid. I played IG2 and MOO2, but, not the third iteration in either series.
Imperium Galactica 3 was renamed Nexus-The Jupiter Project. I believe your right it was based on control of one starship. I too am not quite clear on MoO3 but I believe it was more of a 4x game. I didn't like IG2 as much as the first IG though...the enemy was able to stack too many ships and the fleet configurations and designs weren't as great IMO.

There is one game that i know of that is really strategic and deep in nature where you control one ship.

Anyone here ever heard of the X series? I have X3:Reunion with the XTM mod and it is definitely the deepest space sim I have. Ok, you don't have real damage control or fear of mutiny, but especially in the capital ships you definitely have to worry about your maneuvering, weapons, drones(if you use them), and fuel(though energy is used for warping between systems, not simply traveling through space).

The real depth of the X series though is in its trading and empire management. It's the only Space sim I know where the player flies his own ship but can buy space stations and other ships to form fleets if he wants too. The trading is also really deep with a dynamic economy.

Yeah, I kinda remember about IG3 being renamed. I did enjoy IG2, but it was my first, and to date only, outing with the franchise.

It's more of an arcade game, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the Escape Velocity games. As far as I know, Nova is the only one released for the PC, but data files exist that allow you to play the previous two games using the PC build.

Freespace or Freelancer?
Freelancer 2 for the xbox 360 was cancelled 6 months ago for unknown reasons
Do you have a link to that info? Who was developing it? I'm desperate to know, I've been waiting for a Freelancer sequel/reboot for years - its pretty much the greatest game published by Microsoft in my opinion.

And yeah, if you haven't played it, give it a shot. Aside from the cut scenes the graphics have held up pretty well and the gameplay is timeless.

The computer knows, it KNOWS, it knows EVERYTHING... and it's watching us, waiting for us to put a bounty on ANYONE else...

But seriously, the pirate shit would tie up so much of my fleet before the expansion just keeping the choke points safe.

Independence War, methinks is exactly what you were looking for.
Space sim, but not in a starfighter, in a small capital ship.

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/sim/independencewar/review.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=gsupdates&tag=updates;title;1

Kinda old and the physics threw me off a ton.

theres an expansion? i only have a single/LAN play because i used my cousins copy and cant find the disk i bought so i can use its registration key

I love Sins, but i have never won a single map. Not once. First i get hit by pirate raiding parties, then the alien armada (i play trade federation) comes in and glasses my homeworld. Then i just blitz my capitol ships on a vengeance strike

I forget if I've won or not, I've never lost. I maintain some very small expeditionary fleets and put most of my resources into heavy defensive fleets.

You're looking for 'Nexus: The Jupiter Incident' (for tactical play) or the X series (for a game with more of a sandbox universe and less detail on the combat). Both games have been mentioned before, but from the sound of your OP, Nexus is the game you want. Not that X isn't good (it's brilliant) but the dogfighting is comparatively simplistic and there's a lot of emphasis on building up a business empire from your cockpit. Very satisfying, but a whole different kind of fun to Nexus. (I think. I never actually got around to playing Nexus, it fell to the bottom of my incredibly large 'To Play' stack. I think I'll dig it out and play it now.)

Star Trek: Bridge Commander sounds like what your describing, although I've never actually played it so I can't say for certain.

EVE online is sort of like that, but not really. It is rather strategic sometimes, though, I guess. Just depends on your play style.
Eve can be incredibly strategic, but any recommendation needs to come with a very long boilerplate. I'll save this thread the anguish and go with the simple version - give the trial a go. You'll know within the first day if it's the sort of game for you. For 99% of people around here, they'll find Eve alternatively boring, infuriating, meticulous and (every so often) a heart attack waiting to happen.

This is close, but Star Trek: Starfleet Command 3 (The spiritual prequel to Bridge Commander) is a little more like what you're talking about.

Although I have to say, those two are the closest to what you describe that I'm aware of.

...However.

It is now my life's goal to make this game.
