why in gods name are people getting mandarin or kanji writing as tattoos?! I mean thats like me getting a tattoos with the word "beef" on my arm for everyone to see, which is exactly what my friends fiance did. Basically he wanted everyone to know that hes a Taurus so he decided to get a mandarins word for "beef" tattooed on to his arm thinking that it meant Taurus. So let me ask you, do you guys know anybody that does this stupid crap to make themselves look cool?

How about almost everyone in Miami? I myself will never get a tattoo, seeing as I am deathly afraid of needles.

Occams razor. In any "Why do people do X" scenario, the most likely answer is they are stupid. And now you know!

As for my contribution, I don't know people who do that, but they probably do it because they lack the ability to think things through.

No I don't know anyone who has writing on their skin that can't be washed off. I don't really have a problem with written tattoos like that, it looks kind of dicky but so what? It is there skin after all.

If I really cared about what constellation I was born under I would probably have the actual constellation tattooed on a more hidden spot, back maybe? It would be much more discrete but still presentand to me it wouldn't be a bunch of dots but something that I care about. Too bad I certainly don't don't care about a group of stars, not enough to tattoo them on me anyway.

Yeah I have a buddy who is a tattoo artist and he dies a little bit every time someone asks him for an Asian symbol...

I have to wonder though, are douchebags in Japan getting English words tattood on them?

To quote lost
"That's what it says. It's not what it means."

but in all seriousness I would damn well make sure I KNEW what something meant before permanently marking myself with it.

My friend told me of a woman who got a tattoo she thought said "Love" but actually said something like "Grocery Store." Oh, how bad would that suck?!?

If I were a tatoo artist, and someone wanted Kanji for [insert word/phrase], I'd be quite tempted to tatoo "I can't read Kanji" in Kanji, or something to that effect. I don't understand tatoos in general, but I tend to think I'm in the minority there.

I think Asian symbols are cool as long as you actually know what it means instead of just thinking they know what it means. Besides, they look nice. What's the problem?

People who get random symbols tattooed on them are retarded, I suppose, but I'm not opposed to the idea of Asian symbols as tattoos.

Maybe it's just 'cos I'm genuinely interested in Japanese culture? I've taken 4 yrs. of the language. I dunno'.

My brother has Southern Cross and "True Blue" across his stomach. Horrible.

Any type of dragon or anything cliche and lame like that is generally shite.

Well, I rarely think tattoos are a good idea, but that is just personal preference, if people want to permanently mark their skin to show their ... whatever-it-is-they-are-trying-to-show, then let them. On the other hand, I have a policy, if any of my friends that I thought were sensible people get a stupid [sub](Emphasis on Stupid)[/sub] tattoo I am allowed to backhand them ... hard .... in the face ... with a tank.

Nope, though an equivalent phenomenon exists: http://www.engrish.com//wp-content/uploads/2010/01/everyday-good-feeling.jpg

It's the same concept as Latin terms: if you don't speak Latin, it sounds cool. Even if it makes no sense.

For example:

-Partis morsus es dolens
-Duos pro unus proprius
-Tripudio vulgivagus , sapiens scholasticus quod eximius madidus

Brownie points to the first man to run to babel fish for translation.

A big muscle-headed self-centered jock that gets a Tribal tattoo on his arm and then suddenly thinks he's the awesomest most edgy guy in existence

I'm happy to say I don't know anyone like that. Tattoos aren't all bad, as long as it's something that doesn't make you seem like an ignorant moron.

I'd get something classy, like Vault Boy.

I might get a tatto written in Latin that says "you understand latin, well done", but other than that...

For those interested, in Latin that apparently would be: "Vos agnosco latin, eu."

I made that very same point to my Dad a few gours ago.

OT: I want to get a design, but not a word. Hell, I'll admit I even think they look cool.
