My brother has Southern Cross and "True Blue" across his stomach. Horrible.
I wanted to get the Southern Cross tattooed on, but you're right. It's gone from a patriotic gesture to a label for bogones and/or those who reckoned the White Australia policy made us strong! No offense meant to your brother, don't know him so I ain't judging. Just that's what the Southern Cross Tattoo has become.
Nope, you got him pretty much spot on.

Yeah, but there are worse [http://www.tattooique.com/info/prank-tattoo-lettering-the-artists-riot/] things. This article tells of someone who got sick of the same phenomenon this thread is about, and started tattooing entirely different things than they asked him to. Sadly, he was imprisoned as a result.
that asian fella made me laugh
OT: people get those tattoos because they think it means something or it looks cool.

I think Asian symbols are cool as long as you actually know what it means instead of just thinking they know what it means. Besides, they look nice. What's the problem?

People who get random symbols tattooed on them are retarded, I suppose, but I'm not opposed to the idea of Asian symbols as tattoos.

Maybe it's just 'cos I'm genuinely interested in Japanese culture? I've taken 4 yrs. of the language. I dunno'.
I'm with you.
I've got no interest in japanese culture whatsoever, but if you're genuinely interested in it, find it fascinating, or whatever, feel free to take a kanji tattoo. Just because morons take them, doesn't mean that you shouldn't.

If your knowledge of japan is "Kung Fu and Pandas", and you took a japanese tattoo because they're kind of hip, and everyone has them.. shame on you.

Tattoos are generally obtained either for vanity or power. Vanity in that one believes that the tattoo they get makes them look cooler, tougher, edgier, etc. I once read an article on the power dynamic of tattoos. Something about how marking the body that god gave you lifts one's belief in their own power...a power assertion act, basically.

There are a ton of bad tattoos out there. I've even got a couple bad ones myself, but I don't begrudge anyone for doing what they want. As for the stupidity of some of the tattoos, some people just don't mature intellectually until later on in life. In my particular case, it was a conditional thing. As in, I was doing what Dave Attell calls "time traveling"...I only recall bits and pieces of the nights I got my ugly tattoos done.

If tattoos aren't your thing, don't get one, everyone's entitled to an opinion. But to b*tch about other people enjoying the freedom to do what they want with their bodies is...well, b*tchy.

why in gods name are people getting mandarin or kanji writing as tattoos?! I mean thats like me getting a tattoos with the word "beef" on my arm for everyone to see, which is exactly what my friends fiance did. Basically he wanted everyone to know that hes a Taurus so he decided to get a mandarins word for "beef" tattooed on to his arm thinking that it meant Taurus. So let me ask you, do you guys know anybody that does this stupid crap to make themselves look cool?
I could go for a tattoo that said "beef". I would also write "it's what's for dinner" underneath it and put it someplace suggestive...if I ever got a tattoo, that is. As it stands now, my skin has enough trouble, so I'll limit myself to easily removed temporary decorations.

Occams razor. In any "Why do people do X" scenario, the most likely answer is they are stupid. And now you know!
*Star flies across the screen* The more you know!
As for my contribution, I don't know people who do that, but they probably do it because they lack the ability to think things through.
eh it isn't the same with out the music :(

OP: I remember a story I heard on tv where the people are miss led by the tattoo artists. The customer asks the guy at the shop 'hey i want something in mandarin that says 'life''. then the tat artist says okay I think I found the right one. Then a week later someone who knows mandarin ask the guy with the 'life' tat 'why did you tattoo 'butt sex' on your forearm?'

Actually, sometimes they do. And what's even better is the t-shirts. They just have random English gibberish on them, just like those shirts they sell in the States with random kanji.

Man, I fully agree with the OP, adding Chinese or Japanese tattoos when you don't even understand them is a complete waste of time.
What I hate is how tattoos are always so unoriginal or cliched. Skulls, flowers, hearts, foreign writing, etc. Why can't people be more creative?

To be pedantic, Mandarin isn't a written language. Chinese literature is uniform, despite there being a huge number of spoken languages and dialects.

Meh, I don't care what people write on themselves if they think it looks good. Although if they wanted real calligraphy, they should look no further than Ottoman signatures:

That's just one dude's name.

iv got a tribal armband with my last name over it on my left arm

i got it cause iv always liked tribal designs and wanted something that meant something to me to go with it

i think you should only get a tattoo if you can make it mean something to you, or make it personal

if its what everyone else is getting... or F***ING STARS!!!!... then i dont approve

ill post pics if anyone asks to see it

You know what this reminds me of?

When idiots wear shirts with such symbols on them meaning "long life" and such.

Oh wow! So mysterious!

Pricks.

If someone gets these sort of tattoos on them, they obviously bear bad taste.

Oh yes, and it is as equally hilarious.

I saw a guy in a club last week with `fruent English` tatooed across his shoulder

When it comes to kanji, if you cannot read it, do not get it under your skin. Remember, some kanji means differently depending on whether a Chinese person or Japanese person is reading it.

I have no idea why some people do it though. I suppose that they think it looks cool and cultured..until a Chinese person points out that they `love, power and courage` actually mean `a fool and his money are easily parted`

I'm not adverse to tattoos if they have a good backstory/significant meaning and look good, for example a good mate had one he got in the infantry, a skull wearing a slouch hat.

Wouldn't mind a southern cross, not the commonly used one,

For when I graduate medicine.
