I like both equally, but I wish tf2 had a more sensitive damage system, sometimes it feels as if my bullets don't really count for much!

Alright, yeah. Yeah, from what I've heard the PS3 version has even less stuff than the 360 version, because it was produced by EA instead of Valve, apparently.
yeah the entire Orange Box is total shite on a trife on the PS3 but my grandma got it for me for christmas so I can't just get rid of it...

TF2.

MW2 is just a glorified griefing engine. One which I, admittedly, have used with the whole OMA-Danger Close-Noob tube combo. Balanced my ass

Neither are 'trash', and It's very unfiar to judge a game by its population. (This is not the choice of the creator). However I find MW2 is easier to get into. (I enjoy both)

TF2 anyday.

There's, like you said, so much more variety and you can just play it and have fun, unlike mw2 where you have to be extra careful about every single step or else some camper will shoot you and you won't have a chance to shoot back at all. In TF2 you can have fights with the enemy, but in mw2 its like 2 bullets = dead.
Don't get me wrong, I like both, but TF2 is more fun.

Oh, and i'll much rather have wacky, cartoony funthan gritty (sh*tty) realism thanks.

I have a horrible feeling I'm going to get flamed to death for this...

I actually prefer MW2. There, I said it. I think the kicker for me is that, because I stopped playing TF2 for a while for reasons completely unrelated to MW2, I got substantially behind on updates and new equipment and thus, when I went back to play it again, everyone else has all this nifty shit that I don't.
I know it's all balanced and such but I want the new stuff, not the generic stuff I was playing with before I left however in order to get the new stuff that makes me actually want to play I have to use the generic stuff that makes me not want to play. This is, as I see it, the biggest problem with achievement-oriented unlock systems.

That and after playing hardcore almost exclusively, having to shoot people more than two or three times just seems...wrong somehow.

-Team Fortress 2 has 3 classes whose sole purpose is to pretty much annoy the shit out of anyone and everyone they come across (The Spy, the Sniper, and the Engineer).
What? It's pretty obvious that the spy/sniper are high profile target elimination (being able to easily kill enemies that pose a large threat to the team such as heavy/medic combos and sentry nests) and a well placed sentry nest can be a powerful defense.

Hmmm. Your point about variety is well-made, but I still find TF2 much more repetitive than MW2. A big part of online shooters, for me at least, is "controlling your space". Killing bad guys that come by and not getting killed yourself. This is more or less impossible in TF2, where games often descend into a brawl. You're screwed if your team don't 'get' the game.

Of course, it's all down to personal preference. I like my shooters to be shooters, I like the weapons to feel like weapons. The comedy of TF2 is hilarious when watching, but when playing it rather passes you by.

In my opinion, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory was a far better class-based game and fulfilled both variety of gameplay and good shooter mechanics. Teamwork was also vitally important, but you only really needed one other guy/gal who knew what they were doing to complete the objectives. Add to that that all of the classes played a very important function (which I don't believe they do in TF2).

I clicked on this thread in the hopes to see a trainwreck of people trying to argue with a never ending battle about two completely different games that should never be compared, while making themselves look like complete idiots.

I was not disappointed.

OT: I like TF2 because you can customize the way each individual character on the other team to make them look as deviant and maniacal as possible. It was one of the problems I had in the first game; the characters seemed to friendly and relatable to me(Kind of made me wonder if I really was on the good team, or if it was just an attempted brainwash from the red teams evil overlord Pidgeon) Also, the vast array of experience points and how you will never play the same level twice, due to environmental destruction

MW2 on the other hand, really hit home when it introduced the Real time stratedgy element, making for some often mind bottling multiplayer experiences. Plus how they took away every gun and traded it with a banana was a very risky move, yet turned out good in the long run.

I'll probably get TF2, but playing mw2 right now. A few arguments for your points:
-The creators of Modern Warfare 2 most likely laughed their asses off when asked if they were going to make the online multiplayer fair and balanced. The strategies that are considered noobish aren't considered that because they're bad, but far, far too good and kick most anything ass.
Balance will always be an issue in online games, and the 3 most annoying strategies in mw2 (camping, knifing and noob-tubing) seem to cancel each other out. Apart from a few bits and pieces, mw2 IS balanced, in fact i consider it more balanced than the other call of duty games. And the devs did care, the game has had a lot of patches so far, some of them changing overpoerwed mechanics and exploits.

-While Modern Warfare 2 has a lot of variety, it's not REALLY that varied at all. All of the guns do pretty much the same thing as every other gun in that same class of weapons. If you look at it that way, there's five types of primary weapon, and 4 types of secondary. That's not that varied at all.
While some guns are very similar, it's not exactly 5 types of primary. Most assault rifles handle very differently, for instance one of them is semi-auto while 2 are burst-fire. Some do low damage with high accuracy, some do high damage with a low rate of fire and high recoil. I can't say your gameplay changes drastically if you switch to another weapon of the same type, but for the most part it's a different feel.
Thank you. I was actually waiting on some well-reasoned input from a MW2 supporter. Admittedly yes MW2 is somewhat balanced but it seems like one of the "big three" unbalanced strategies is always the one killing me. When I never use any of them except in desperate circumstances, I am hesitant to care about the three cancelling each other out. As for your comments about guns, you are right, but I'm just posting what I said then. I stand by it to a degree, however, and I personally think that the differences between guns lie primarily in their only slightly-different appearances.

You see, they're both entirely different games built to be played entirely different ways.

The whole balance aspect keeps getting brought up and obviously, Tf2 wins hands down. That's because every class is set by Valve and they've each been given a predetermined role to play.
On MW2, a Sniper could have a Rifle and a back up shotgun, a few claymores and could probably run a little faster.
He'll be different from the other sniper who's on the other side who opted for the SMG for an off weapon, and packs a different rifle.
Both of them play, different ways.

There's the key point that's over looked in your comparison, TF2's class system makes itself balanced and limited.
Whereas MW2 lets the players pick and choose their load out, however some set-ups will just been a little one sided.
This also leads into your variation point too, the only reason TF2 is varied is because of the roles of the class.
If you took away say, the Medics healing, engi's turrets and the Spy's invis and cloak. You'd be left with people with guns and a melee.
There is little variation here too, so the whole "guns do the same thing" is lost upon itself.

TF2 whilst in public games may be more strat based (I used "may be" because I've never noticed it myself), looking at MW you can hardly think it's anything but a run and gun unless a clan comes for a pub stomp.
Try a ranked game using the mods (this is going back to COD4 here) league matches are hella strict and incredibly tactical.
The "noob" stuff gets thrown out the window and you're pretty restricted. Even in cases were the limitations in comps are removed, you'll find more serious players sticking to more professional loadouts.

That would be my counter point, not a flame.

I found that when playing Modern Warfare online, my layout was determined by everyone else. For example...certain weapons or perks where NOOOB (most where for good reason tbh). Because of this, it loses variety..."same shit, different day" as quoted from the same game n___n

TF2 is less serious and is more of a Game then MW2 which tries to be a simulation.

I recently purchased TF2 on Steam, and have been playing for about a month now.
I personally believe that TF2 is a shining example of good game design.

See, TF2 has a very specific visual style and theme to the game which is consistent through the classes, the voice acting, the level design and even the online community (TeamFortress.com).
The stylized theme makes a refreshing change to the usual "Generic WWII Game", "Space Marines 3" or "Modern Warfare Clone".

While it's taken me awhile to get good with some of the classes (I'm still a shocking spy), when I first started playing I just grabbed something straightforward (soldier, scout) and started having fun straight away.

The thing I find the best about TF2 is that I can change the pace of the game at any time by switching class. If I get frustrated with getting gunned down by sentries as the scout I can switch to the demoman and take out the sentry, or switch to the medic to help boost my team. That way each class feels kinda like it's own unique game as it's such a huge shift in perspective. This helps make the multiplayer feel a little less repetitive than "camp, snipe, get shot, weep in the corner for a few seconds, camp, snipe" or the "get shot, spawn, get shot, spawn, get shot, RAGE QUIT".

Just my $0.02 on the matter.

TF2. You can run around spraying pictures of busty ladies on everything.

The unlocks aren't necessarily "better" items, just different. I almost exclusively play the Soldier, and the only unlocked item I keep equipped is the Equalizer (the melee replacement, and I rarely ever need it). I'm much better with the stock launcher and shotgun than with the Direct Hit and Buff Banner. Same goes for the other classes - it's all about your personal playing style.

OT: I should add that I always feel very "alone" in MW2; the team element just isn't there. It feels very "every man for themselves", and even if I'm doing well, it never feels as cool as a solid team victory in TF2. There's nothing better than everyone working together to roll the cart into that last point during overtime after Red's been giving you hell for fifteen minutes. Pure awesome.
