No, sorry if the title misled you, I don't want to hear rumors, predictions, and the like, nor do I have any.

What I really feel the need to ask is: Is there a point to even making a sequel?

This game is basically the best multiplayer experience I've had, even counting the assholes with mics. I'm used to it, because I do turn into a deadeye with any sniper eventually, so people abuse me often.

Now in most games where sequels are made, the multiplayer never really changes, minus new weapons and occasionally gametypes. Examples being CoD, Halo, Gears of War, Left 4 Dead. However, the justification for the sequel is a continuation of story, a new singleplayer, updated graphics, and the like. And for each game I listed, they all include that, with the minimal changes to multiplayer.

Now here we have TF2 (Team Fortress 2), which is purely multiplayer. There is no singleplayer, so no new story can be made. The graphics are nigh on un-updatable, as they used a pixar-esque cartoon graphics. The game modes and classes are balanced and fun. Most of all, even my friends with integrated graphics chips can play the game, as the specs are stupidly easy to meet without sacrificing the higher end of the spectrum. On high you still see shadows, good effects, etc.

Oh, and VALVe updates the shit out of the game, with class updates, new weapons, and I think there's been a new gametype in there once in a while.

So could VALVe really justify making a sequel to this game? Ideally, as long as the updates are fresh, don't destroy the delicate balance (which they haven't, surprisingly, just changed it a bit), everything else is taken care of. The graphics aren't an issue, its made to look good, but not hyper-realistic. I don't think they can churn out a sequel without making a sequel in name only (ie new classes, maps, graphics, etc) as they can take care of most of that right now via updates, and keep attracting new players while keeping the old.

There really is nothing to make a sequel for. TF2 is perfect as it is. Even if I need a new video card to run it better, heh.

They've actually started production on TF3 about 27 years ago. Valve time and all...

I can see them making one later on in the future, but it's going to be a looong time comin'.

I don't think TF2 could be made into a sequel. If Valve really wanted to, then they could attempt to cash in on the success of TF2, but the market base would be split to the point of an unsuccessful launch and probably a loss of money. They could take what they learned about making that sort of experience and apply it to a new game that could be essentially the same, but would provide a definite enough difference to allow for a higher probability of creating another hit game. That is the only feasible option i can see.

Not really much point to making a sequel, although it would sell really well. It'll probably be out in ~15 years.

Eventually there will be a TF3, but not for a long time. It'll take a good long time till a sequel becomes necessary.

See this is what I've been thinking about myself. I have no idea how Valve should handle the continuation of the Team Fortress franchise. The game definitely doesn't feel like it needs a sequel. Despite playing it for 3 years straight, it does not yet feel old. How many games can you actually say that about? Very few, and I doubt many of those would be FPS games. Part of this is I believe is because with Valves constant updates the game hasn't really had a chance to stagnate. Unlike most games, TF2 is constantly evolving due to these updates. Vanilla TF2 feels like a very different game from the modern TF2. So if Valve keeps giving these updates, would there really be any need for a sequel? Eventually the game is going to have changed so much that it could already be considered a sequel. Except we won't have to buy it again, which I sometimes feel guilty about. I payed $20 for this game, yet it's easily my most played. I feel like I should have payed more for it.

Why does everyone love TF2 so much? I hate that game. Apparently it has problems with Intel processors. What that translates to roughly is I only get to play on one server that I set as a favorite when I got the game, which is a 24/7 2fort map. So I get all the wonders of camping demos, everyone spraying in tight quarters so I can't play spy, snipers that sit on the battlements and are good enough to headshot me over and over again. Since I bought the game off the wonderful creation called Steam I can't return the game. Maybe the game is good on other maps? On the one single fucking map I am stuck on it's pretty terrible.

Edit: And yes, to get the obvious out of the way, I tried all the fixes I could, reinstalled TF2, reinstalled Steam, did a Voodoo dance, the works.

*ahem* WHERE IS MY ENGIE UPDATE?

I don't think Valve is dumb enough to try and release a sequel. If they do another multiplayer FPS, I'm sure it will be on a different concept.

Say what you want about L4D and it's sequel, but as the OP said, TF2 doesn't have a story. There was a lot of room for new stories and characters in that game.

Really, Unless it's the far far future I doubt TF3 is needed, mainly for the reasones Kraken said.

I didn't have an appreciation for Vanilla TF2. Then I didn't have one for it halfway through when only half the classes were updated. Now I love the game. Scout is by far my favorite class. Everything just feels...right.

As far as a sequel goes...Probably not until they feel they've done all they can on this system they've built it on.

That 2fort map is the bane of my existence. Nothing sucks more then being shot repeatedly by a sniper named "Sir Sean Connery" as I try to get used to the rifle.

However, I am on an intel core duo, no issues besides firewall ones at first. Try looking at your firewall settings in regards to TF2, if its blocking stuff then it'll really make it a ***** to play. Like not connecting to servers, no favorites.

But I don't see why you don't pick another map, even if you cant favorite it, honestly.

What was it that Gabe said at the beginning of the Dev Commentary?
"After nine years in development, I hope it's been worth the wait."

Not only was it worth the wait, but if Valve were to make TF3, expect another nine years for it to get done, art shift partially through included.

Because the game will literally not let me connect to any server other then the one I have favorited (the 24/7 2fort map).

I'm just wondering what will Valve do when everyone who can buy TF2 has bought TF2. How eill they make the money to keep working on the game. Yes there is steam but once no money is being made from TF2 will they completely stop working on it. I know that this is not likely to happen but it's just the thoughts that keep going through my head like a nightmare.

Go into options > advanced and enable the dev console.

Pick a server, and if it says its not responding, open the console and type "connect (server IP)" and hit enter (without the quotes or parentheses), it should connect, and if it does, its a firewall issue, not your PC.

Try it and let me know if it worked?
