What do you think of Techno/Trance/Dance music?
And who is your favorite artist?

Personally, I like Basshunter, also Envy from Newgrounds

Do you know any good dance? Probably not...

What, so we are intolerant of other people's musical taste now?

Don't be to harsh, he seems to be a decent poster, even though his musical tastes differ slightly from the general Escapist.

I don't listen to much of that music any more. I used to, I liked the thrill it can give, a boost of adrenaline when you need it. Nowadays I'm rather mellow minded though, but I can still enjoy it at times. There's no specific artists I can mention though, as long as it sounds like it came from hell it's cool. Oh and the Prodigy, of course.

Edit, sorry for being the third person in a row to quote you Voodoopigs, I don't wish to annoy you. I just would like to give somebody new a bit of a more welcoming reply.

I think Basshunter pretty good, but his songs are cheesy in English. The songs in Swedish about computers are much better. But my favourite techno etc. groups are Pendulum, Sabrepulse, Prodigy and Hot Chip.

Are we talking about techno specifically, or using the word as a catch-all term for anything that iTunes would categorise as 'dance and electronica'?

I like a bit of everything. I enjoy stuff like Aphex Twin, Venetian Snares, Squarepusher... right up to the cheesy stuff you hear on MTV Dance - I'm a big fan of Basshunter in particular. It's all good.

Also, the new album from The Prodigy is likely my favourite album of the year so far.

I'm not big into Trance, but Da Graham Cracka from New Grounds. Favorite trance song: Pink Elephants and Lemonade.

Call me old-school, but it's still all about Technotronic.

For a song to be true techno, you must be able to take the lyrics from any other techno song and match them with the beat.

Not a huge fan of Techno/Trance/Dance, but Basshunter is pretty good. I'm more into Rock/Indie though. However, as it happens this has given rise to some pretty excellent remixes of some great rock/indie and even electropop stuff, such as the Skream remix of La Roux's 'In For The Kill'. There are some awesome dance songs that I love (one of my flatmates regularly has his stereo on at full blast, and I hated Lady GaGa at first but she's starting to grow on me).

No matter what, if it's defined as techno I avoid it like the plague. It's probably some shitty happy hardcore or a repetitive rave.

Electronica is the general term for electronic that doesn't suck (though that's a personal definition.), although Tiesto, Moby and other artists you find at first aren't that great.

Trance? Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold for something different (his remix albums before Creamfields are kick-ass). For really good trance (progressive), try Gabriel and Dresden, Oceanlab and Above and Beyond.

Oceanlab:

On A Good Day [http://tinyurl.com/afg3wm]

Armin van Buuren

For Big Beat (in the vein of Fatboy Slim but doubly epic), Crystal Method, Chemical Brothers, The Propellerheads and Junkie XL.

For break/breakcore, Leftfield, Bong-Ra, The Flashbulb, Venetian Snare, Alec Empire, etc. - there's a thread about it somewhere.

Never got into chiptune, it's pretty much remixed MIDI. Sabrepulse is decent, though.

IDM is good too, although when you get into the glitchy sort of artists you're getting into psuedo-trance. Which blows. Autechre is good, but ask someone else about IDM.

me? No - trance has never been my thing, my husband is a hardcore dark drum and bass fan though and that has broadend my horizons a little, I just can't stand anything repetetive really though so that rules me out.

My only problem with this type of music is that it takes little to no skill to make.

At all.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGttxDgo6jc <-- This is Basshunter himself giving a demo (in German) about how to make a decent trance track (at least a good melody that you can loop and put effects over for 5 minutes) in FL studio.

I'd know, because I can do things similar to that, and it sounds just as good if not better, and certain people love it. I prefer making Electronica anyway, but I occasionally use guitar in it, but I like synthesizers a lot too, so it's more of a combo of Electronica/Rock, but I don't wanna advertise myself here anyway...But back to trance/techno:

I really like how it sounds, but it's not very hard to do. That does not make it bad music.

I love trance mixes of Ayumi Hamasaki songs, and a lot of KMFDM can be trancey-ish, though I like certain underground psychedelic trance artists like those at Mindflux Productions.

Anyhow, I'm surprised Daft Punk hasn't been mentioned yet.

I don't think they are considered true Techno, but I really like The Faint.

Here's one of their songs. Check them out.

Yeah I like techno but I can't think of my favorite artist/song. Euro-beat is also very good.

This, x100. They're phenomenal. Good choice of song too.

What do you think of the latest album? Most people I know seem to think it's a bit poor...
