This Place (that's literally the name) in collaboration with the BBC has developed a headset that will let you control your television with your mind.

The article mentions that some users had an easier time than others at controlling the device - perhaps due to the unfamiliarity of it, calibration, etc. Currently it is only a prototype, and I'd want to try it for myself before purchasing anyway.

While something like this isn't entirely a new concept - years ago there was a company that wanted to develop a similar headset for use with the original Xbox, I remain hopeful that the companies involved can work out the problems to make it functional. Imagine how wonderful this would be for a paralyzed person to be able to control electronic devices, or even immerse themselves in a game-world with their mind method used to control input.

It seems interesting... But, given how trains of thought can be completely random, I can only imagine that this will only result in some bizarre channel surfing, with copious stops to pornography channels.

My thoughts exactly! I can imagine having a conversation with a friend and inadvertently turning the volume up with both of us yelling and finally turning the TV off.

Still, I think for disabled persons this technology could be really beneficial.

Well the good news is that if you're severely disabled, there are more extreme and useful options for you. A few small bore holes in the skull, and some electrodes where they'll do the most good, and you can move a robotic hand like your own.
That's a whole other story! I take it you're referring to this? Such an impressive breakthrough - makes me think of the Deus Ex universe:
