"Yellow Raft in Blue Water" and "The Secret Life of Bees." Read them if you wish, but "Yellow Raft in Blue Water" was more than a redundant, irritating pile of drama, and "The Secret Life of Bees" is a book that starts off like a cupcake...and then as if to hurry the baking of the cupcake, they placed it in a volcano to speed up the process.

And "Lord of the Flies"...yes, I agree, it was depressing. I had to read it my Freshmen year in high school...along with "Brave New World." *shudders*
HEY Brave New World was cool, imo. And Lord of the Flies was kinda depressing. It was an amazing book though. It made me feel very different for about two or three days after finishing it.

Scarlet Letter. I hated that book. Hell, everyone in my class did. Even the teacher. The TEACHER. But he made a good point. As bad as it may be, I need to know why this piece of literature was famous. I still hated it, though.

The story behind it is quite interesting, if you're ever in Boston you should visit the house that inspired "House of the Seven Gables". Across the street is the office where Hawthorne got his idea for the Scarlet Letter. Good stuff.

But I agree with you on the book itself. It was definitely a drag.

I hated The Great Gatsby. Yes, it's a classic. Yes, it's saying "blah, blah blah commentary about society! just like The Awakening does" but geez, I get more out of stories like Lord of the Flies, which was great and I loved it.

Just every book I was forced to read in high/middle school
This, with the exception of The Wizard of Oz that I read in 6th grade, that was actually enjoyable. Now Windsong, on the other hand...

Also, The Prince and the Pauper was terrible. And Summer of the Swans was also horribly boring, but then again I hate stories like that (with typical kids/teens who get in mundane conflicts if any).

And here's a piece of advice for To Kill A Mockingbird: when the court parts come, imagine it like Phoenix Wright. It makes it much more interesting, at least for me.

Jane Eyre. Pure crap.
Hell I couldn't bring myself to finish that. I was forced under duress to study it for my A levels - as you & anyone else (especially if you're a guy) who's read it can imagine how pissed off at my teacher I was.

Other than that, how has A Passage To India not been mentioned? It is one of the most boring things ever written, not to mention that it's badly written too.

The Yearling was the most bring book I've ever read. Why it won the Pulitzer prize is beyond me.

Lord of the Flies was despicably annoying to read. But I have the worst book in the history of mankind within this handy hyperlink - http://www.amazon.com/review/R1LPA5YOND6TGD/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm

Animal Farm. I hated that book. It was too philosophical for my tastes.
Hey, talking pigs, what's not to like? Add a dash of James Cromwell and you've got Hollywood gold!

How can you hate Animal Farm? It's like how they say if you put a bunch of monkeys into a room with a typewriter, eventually they'll produce Shakespeare. Well, apparently if you piss off enough farm animals in a barn, they'll develop the principles for communism.

I love that book.

Yeah, Steinbeck wasn't a happy guy, and really liked tragic stories. Ever read Of Mice and Men?
