Ah yes Texas, when we're not threatning to secede we're forcing rapists to register. Not that I have anything wrong with that second one.
There have been quite a few times when I can find nothing wrong with the first one either.

This is a good idea in theory. Although I envision it working well in the name -> online id direction (know a guys name, find out his online ID), I envision much hash collision in the online id -> name direction. Which would kindof kill the point.

No crime beyond murder deserves a lifetime punishment.
Actually rape and pedophilia both deserve lifetime (and beyond) punishments. Seriously.

I can imagine playing WoW: "Hey, there's a lot of people in the Rapist guild."
The way the law is now is already outrageous. Some dude can be 17 and fuck his 16 year old girlfriend, and be on a sex offender list for the rest of his life. That isn't okay. More to your point, I simply do not agree. Rapists, on the whole have psychological problems. They need to serve their time, and then be forced to get psychological help. Some kind of rehabilitation to help them face their problems and hopefully shape them into functioning members of society. After that, obviously they need a significantly longer period of probation than the average ex-con, but this kind of lifetime ostracization is much too steep and non-comprehensive for the one-time stupid teenagers and mentally ill who comprise the majority of the sex-offender population

It's just one of the many parts of the system that do not function as they were meant to.
Last I checked you had to be over 18 to get a rape charge for screwing a 16 year old. Is there some case where a 17 year old was prosecuted for statutory?

And I doubt that the vast majority of rapists are one-time stupid teenagers and mentally ill (in the traditional sense). Sex offenders, maybe. Rapists? No, I doubt it. Mostly people who will do it (or something equally bad) again and poor SOBs who screwed the wrong chick and she cried rape.

What's next, they'll need to wear a T-shirt saying "I rape people"?
Nah, they'll just tattoo it right on your forehead a la Snow Crash. Much more controllable.

(Hopefully I quoted it right. There was a lot of previous quotes in the post.)

Get this, two 16 year olds can agree to have sex. Well, one of the 16 year old's parents can prosectute the other teen, and they can become a registered sex offender for the rest of their life.

Let's personify this even more: A 16 year old girl finally gives in to her bf's desire for sex. After intercourse, the parents of the bf can prosecute the girl for rape. She would be a registered sex offender for the rest of her life! So until "convicted sex offender" actually means that person is dangerous, all attmepts to isolate CSO's is bogus!

I predict everyone adding 'sex offender' to their tags now.

To troll Texas.

Not sure if anyone has posted this yet but.
Couldn't they make it that people with underage accounts be unable to play or contact
those registered as sex offenders?
Might clear it up a bit.

I don't care if you have the top tier gear. No one in WoW is going to do a raid with a sex offender.

If someone is crazy enough to go out and rape children, I'm not sure this kind of thing will deter them.

I am so tempted. If it passes I think we need to take action.

Sex offender registry is supposed to protect communities from sexual predators. Obviously having gamertags registered makes a lot of sense since you don't want predators using xbl to hunt for prey. Brilliant except:

So far in this forum I've seen urinating in public and consensual teen sex listed as predatory acts. It doesn't end there. Sexting, the act of sending nude pictures of yourself over a phone, is considered child pornography if you are underage. It has been prosecuted as such. At least one girl is in jeopardy of being a registered sex offender for sexting.

America, land of the unforgiving, uncompassionate and stupid legal system. Way to lead the charge Texas.

Good idea but couldn't they just make an alt ?
That's what I was wondering. Given how easily you can have multiple characters in an MMO, how well is this really likely to work?
Account names. IPs, etc. And don't say proxy. Because I have no solution for that yet.
if your being monitored they already scan your emails, its like if they get sent under house arrest after they do prison time, its more of a temporary thing

Its texas, it will more than likely pass. I say good for them, if only we could get all the other biggots, racist, homophobes, and classist people on xbl to register their offenses would make playing on there more enjoyable.
I wish people like that had little symbol before their name to let me know if they are gonna ba assholes... Would save me sooooo much time!

its not a deterrent this is to keep the permanent crazies where they belong, locked up

a deterrent would be someone on the lawn with a gun telling them the next time they try to take a child he or she will be shot

I think that's fair for a sex offender, that and getting sterilized

As with all things sex offender: it's not the punishment, it's the definition of the offender, with which I have a problem.

In NC and several other states, if you urinate in back alley and somebody happens to see, you have to register. That's considered a sex offense.

Not quite the same as raping a child. A dude gets drunk and takes a leak and BAM: his life is over. A little strict.
My thoughts as well it was like a recent Nudist Pumpkin Run in which some people put some pumpkins on their heads and ran nude through a town. All of them got slammed with being sex offenders...I wish I could remember the state but it was honestly over the top and stupid to ruin a bunch of people's lives over.

I think anyone convicted of a sexual offense, or capital offense for that matter, should be put into a PUBLIC registry.
Anyone who is Canadian will remember a certain sex offender that was not only removed from the national registry, but had her identity changed, and then allowed to procreate. Given the nature of what she did in the first place, thats a royal wtf.

Well, by the letter of the law she is posing for child porn, even if she did take the picture herself and (stupidly) sent it to someone across the phone, no doubt a mature teenager who would never show it to anyone else or post it online.

She's guilty of being a flaming idiot and I feel no sympathy. CHARGE!
