No they should wear yellow stars and have rocks thrown at them.

Let he who is without rape cast the first stone? In Texas? I doubt anyone would or could actually throw anything.
That could work though. I have a lot of rocks I could throw.

Personally I never understood the whole point of the letter. It's not like the small town you lived in needed reminding of what you did. Shame, I suppose.

I'm all for rehab and doing your time to clear your name and all that jazz. Unfortunately, our prison system does little more than take the bad habits of people that enter and exacerbate them before releasing them back into the world, where they find newer and more creative ways to keep fucking up.

No doubt at some point a sex offender used an online alias and met somebody only to do bad things to them. Then the person complained that if the database had their alias info, blah blah...

If you accept the idea of a sex offender database then this is not that big of a stretch and actually makes sense.

Sexting, the act of sending nude pictures of yourself over a phone, is considered child pornography if you are underage. It has been prosecuted as such. At least one girl is in jeopardy of being a registered sex offender for sexting.
America, land of the unforgiving, uncompassionate and stupid legal system. Way to lead the charge Texas.
Well, by the letter of the law she is posing for child porn, even if she did take the picture herself and (stupidly) sent it to someone across the phone, no doubt a mature teenager who would never show it to anyone else or post it online.
She's guilty of being a flaming idiot and I feel no sympathy. CHARGE!

Live their lives in peace. What a concept. Two problems with it:

1) True sex offenders have an extremely low rate of rehabilitation. The purpose of a registry is so that you can do your best to minimize damage to a community and without a registry you have a real problem of letting predators loose on the public with no way to track them.

2) Let me introduce you to cobrausn, who apparently believes that stupid teen-age mistakes should haunt a person in horrific ways for the rest of their lives. This is the mentality behind the vast majority of the legal system in the US today.

EDIT: Just saw some other posts by cobrausn. I retract the pointed statement at him, but his post quoted here is still the standard for far too much of our legal system so the rest still stands.

ANd what happens when I'm merrily skipping along, only to find that a sex offender is using my gamertag on another server?
Wow.
That would be the of ultimate lameness.
I'd have to change my username for everything.
*facepalm*
I hope no sex offender saw my ultimate creative name and decided to call themselves Glerken...

Agreed, but does this registry need to be accessible to the public? Or should this be a tool for law enforcement?

Felt no sympathy for her. Doesn't mean I agree with the way the system works.

It's just a light hearted joke. If I can be so insightful as to assume you are from Texas, feel free to make fun of me for being a Scot.
Guess what? I wont give a damn!
Well I did say 'we'.

Light hearted jokes typically have smileys after them. :)

So you're a Scot? You, uh, drink a lot! Yeah!

Although considering my Irish and Apache Indian roots, I probably shouldn't speak of people using the fire water so...

Unless you are willing to fully fund predator tracking you have to have some level of public access to said records. Otherwise the registry is useless.

In a world where beauty pageants, playboy centerfolds and skimpily dressed ultra-thin superstars set the standard how the hell does anyone call sexting a felony? If you're going to yell "CHARGE!" you are essentially saying let the system have it's way with her, whether or not you agree with how it works.

Here's a concept: Treat true sex offenders as human beings with an incurable and publicly dangerous mental health issue, and while we're at it get over our Puritan/juvenile infatuation with nudity. Oh wait, those both require most of humanity gaining a zen buddhist-like attitude towards sex. Oh well, fail for me BLARGH!

Its texas, it will more than likely pass. I say good for them, if only we could get all the other biggots, racist, homophobes, and classist people on xbl to register their offenses would make playing on there more enjoyable.
For once I agree with a 360 fanboy. Solely for the fact that biggots, racists, homophobes and classists are all heretics who need to die. Last decade.

The CHARGE! was more of a response to an earlier post. If the pics are nude and of someone under the age of consent, it is a pornographic image involving a child. Seems straightforward, and teenagers shouldn't be that stupid anyway. Digital images of private parts tend to spread across the internet faster than a worm.

Zen buddhist-like attitude? You mean the attitude that sex is not wrong but to enjoy it too much is? You probably mean more of a Roman outlook on sex as opposed to a Victorian or Puritan outlook.

We're not Europe. Our outlook on sex (publicly) will never be that loose. We also have very little in common with our Puritan roots. A quick browse of television channels should show you that. How comfortable is too comfortable?

Example: HBO had to condense the first three episodes of the series 'Rome' into a single episode with nothing but sex and violence for their European audience. They claim to have done this because anything less just would not hold the attention of a European audience.

It's a perfectly workable system to sit somewhere in between.

I don't like the idea as I feel anonimity is a big part of what makes the internet and things like Xboxlive/PSN what they are. Truthfully any kid who is going to be taken in by an anonymous sex predator probably isn't going to be considering the flags. If they start using the flags to omit people from servers or in online matchmaking or whatever I could see some legal issues down the road as well.

I suppose it's a moot point though because I am unsure how they would even go about trying to implement something like this. Honestly if they can register sex offenders, then they should be able to deal with these Chinese Gold Farmers and such in MMOs. You can basically ban an account and then see the same guy back with another one inside of an hour.

Either your going to wander around in MMO and see highlighted under or over someone's name/guild tag. Which would be the most lulzworthy thing ever, or they are going to do private flagging and create things like "Penal Servers" for all intents and purposes, basically servers full of nothing but sex offenders prevented from playing on other servers. People are just going to do the same thing gold farmers have been doing however and render it a moot point.

Unless of course I'm misunderstanding the intent here.

The ultimate irony of this would be if say the "label" took the form of an XBL badge so badge addicted completionists would be driven to get it. :p

"Hey little boy, go tell mommy I'm trying to molest you my real name is I want the FBI to give me my sex offender badge. Nono, don't go. Really I've been trying all day to get reported. Puhleease! I'll help you with any achievement you need..."

So wait, you say somebody who doesn't like the idea of gay sex (a homophobe, right?) but otherwise has no other prejudices and treats gays the same as everyone else needs to die?

Right. Sorry we can't all be turned on by the idea of sweaty man on man love.

I turn the table on you. YOU, sir, are the biggot, and therefore should die.

Waaait, wouldn't this just make them be able to identify themselves to each other, thereby eventually creating a network of them!

No I didn't mean a Roman attitude. I specifically meant a Zen like attitude - enlightened and mature. And yes this country is too close to it's Puritan roots. Homophobia, for example, runs rampant. Especially in Bible belt states like, oh I dunno TEXAS! I saw your post regarding homophobes. That was a either blatant misinterpretation for the purpose of trolling or serious naivete. Have a nice thread I'm outta here.
