Small towns get business boosts through their small businesses. You can see this reflected nationally by comparing the very anti-worker southern states to the west coast and new England based on their minimum wages and the percentage of the population that works for small businesses. Spoiler, states with higher minimum wages tend to employ more people in small businesses. Of course the most rural states have the highest incidence of small business employment, which is why you're bringing up small businesses at all, but even among the extremely rural states, the trend continues. Montana has a higher minimum wage than any of it's neighbors and has a higher rate of small business employment than them. South Dakota has a higher minimum wage than North Dakota and has about a 2% higher rate of small business employment than they do.

The short version is that CPS is a mandated reporter of a wide range of things they might observe, and that reporting can be used as grounds for probable cause or a warrant. Refusing CPS entry is also grounds for them to take your kids (with police assistance if necessary), at least long enough for an investigation. So if police suspected someone with kids might be up to some kind of crime but can't get a warrant for a search, they'd send an "anonymous" tip into CPS - so the alleged criminals would either have to submit to the CPS visit (who is mandated to report what they see) or have their children taken for the investigation, which gets police in the house anyways.
There've also been some scattered cases of CPS being used ideologically, based less on actual risk or harm to children and more to the beliefs of those involved - for example there have been at least two kids taken by CPS that were seemingly targeted because the kids were given white supremacist names.
I feel like I should point out that it seems like damn near every small town has some sort of dollar store while most small towns I drive through as a regular basis in Montana doesn't need them.
Seems relevant to the conversation. Most small towns around me have the same "looking to hire $15/hr" fast food joints as in the cities. Higher minimum wage has definitely not hurt rural montana

Funnily enough I grew up in a minuscule town in Texas that for the longest time didn't have any big businesses. Granted it also had 3 liquor stores and no grocery stores, but the point is now there's 2 dollar store style grocery stores opening up there (which is kind of dumb as the town doesn't even have a thousand people and the stores are literally right next to each other). But all that and I look at this ultra MAGA enclave that has a municipal electric co-op putting in municipal fiber optic internet and sit green with envy at their socialism.

Well, the predecessor to CPS did some fucked up shit that makes the CPS looked like saints.
You can't expect an agency to be run perfected. Nor can you expect it never to have zero complaints. One of it's jobs is to remove babies/kids from parents. The parents are never going to be happy with that
Also, during Covid, there was a spike in custody cases in my country. Because covid made going between houses more dangerous due to spreading of germs. Thus, you could get full custody with little complaints. Many were fabricated just to keep the child. So it's not just the ideology of CPS that's been a problem.
I actually agree with MRAs on father's access to children. I've seen plenty of solo dads in my time, and the stereotype of the mother being the 'good' parents in a dramatic overgeneralisation. But don't take out the CPS just because you are trying to rectify this stereotype
Oh agreed. It needs reformed (like basically everything regarding family law does). It serves a function, a necessary function, but it gets misused and abused a lot.
But I imagine if summed up that position as "Disband CPS" that people would take issue with it, assuming I mean something different than that, and if I told them what I really meant they'd tell me it was a terrible and ineffective slogan at communicating that idea.
Which is probably exactly what happened, as the current draft in the first post here has language about reforming or potentially replacing the organization, and the language of "eventual abolishment of CPS" came from a different document 2 years ago.

They could always not raise prices, but businesses are always looking for any excuse to raise prices. Only to show their true colors when the excuse they made to up prices becomes no longer a factor and they almost never lower prices in response. Gas and housing is disproportionately expensive because businesses that control such have come to realize they can get away with doing that.
I don't think there's a legal mechanism for a Texit, but hell, should a referendum pass, by all means--create one. Let Texas leave, contingent upon appropriate compensation and relocation assistance for those who opposed leaving. Likewise, the US federal government must be compensated for any Federal property it cannot remove (read: buildings) and assisted with removing what can be (read: military equipment and personnel).
I think Texas will find it needs the US more than the US needs Texas. Not to mention, back in the US, the GQP may suddenly find it much more difficult to win national elections without this giant red state.
