So I just bought Team Fortress 2 on Steam and it's downloading right now. I've heard alot of good things about TF2 and decided to try it out.
So in the meantime does any one here have any tips or tricks they'd like to share? Help a brother out?

I'm a complete and total newbie to this by the way.

There's a training mode in the game, they added it just recently.
Seriously, if I had this when I started, I would've known my arse from my elbow and not got shot about 20 times.

Start out as a soldier and aim your rockets where people are going, always aim at their feet to get the splash damage to do the work, as well.
Almost all weapons get damage falloff, though, so anything past medium range and you're probably better off saving your ammo if you're not a sniper.

Also, there's an options menu, you'll find in there some options about "field of view" and such, I'd turn them up a bit, just so you can see more, experiment with what works for your eyesight.
Finally, in the advanced options (I think it's called that), there's an option to have damage listed numerically above your enemy every time you hit them.

Use that.

Play the tutorial, then play a few games.

Then ask here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/chat/The-Escapist-Team-Fortress-2-Group-PC] about anything you specifically need help with and someone will be able to answer, there are people good at every class in there so someone will be able to help.

but here is a good tip to get you started.

Try to play on Capture point-badlands.

That's a map that every class is good and easy to play.

Start with the scout and play each class three times each so you learn the basics of each class.

Good luck

Well, everyone has a unique style. If you told me how you normally like to play games i could tell you which class would suit you best...

This never hurt anybody.
[small]Well, except the medic...or possibly you, if you balls it up![/small]

If you're the Spy, learn to love doorways and over crowding.
There's nothing quite like fragging the entire team because they didn't realise they had one Medic too many at the back when they went through that doorway.
[small]Especially you, you Pyro ************...[/small]

Stay away from Pyros.

Go with the class that gives your team a good balance - never ever ever be the fourth sniper.

I found going medic helped me early on - you can watch what your healing target does and learn from that whilst staying in cover.

When you die there are tips that will appear at the bottom left while waiting to respawn for your chosen class. They are really useful tips and can help beginners a lot if you pay attention to them.

Usaually it says "Achievement" in the names of those servers.

But if you want to be sure you can select to view a simplified list and then only pick games that have pictures besides them.

Achievement whoring servers usually only have a white and black TF2 logo as a picture.

Haha havnt seen that one, thats awesome. So many times i just waltz right though a line shredding the other team cause none are smart enough to see the medic saving my arse.

OP just play what you think looks cool, play a bit of every class and find one that fits you, and after a while just start playing a different class till you get better at it, its no fun always being the same class, and it just takes practice. Like i used to fear playing spy cause it certainly isn't the easiest class to learn but stick with it and you'll be backstabbing pretty decent in no time.

Pick a server with vanilla in the title, or one that is playing a map with a name beginning with pl_, plr_, cp_ or ctf_.
Not achievement_.

Start of as Pyro. Everyone will love you!

Alternatively try playing medic for a bit. Its a good way just to get a feel of what sort of tactics your opponents will use depending on their class ect ect. And everyone will actually love you this time, i promise.

Look at videos on youtube at how to play each class.

My only tip is as the Soldier aim for their feet, the splash damage will take care of them.

There is no best, I'm excellent with the Sniper, Engineer, Heavy a Pyro but I suck with the Spy, Medic and Soldier.
Let me rephrase, What's your favourite class?

maddawg IAJI

I prefer the term "Zomguard"

I actually just downloaded the game roughly 12 hours ago myself. It slows down quite a bit when explosions and giblets are flying in every direction, but overall, I love it.

So far, I've had a lot of success with the Medic,Pyro and Demoman and I'm happy to say that I'm not a total failure with the sniper (First kill was with that class) Pyro is pretty handy in Payload games if you can get the jump on the pushing group. The Demoman is great at holding chokeholds with his Sticky Gernades and the Medic is just great over all if you can pair him up with a Heavy or Soldier.

It doesn't matter which map you take. The first map is always the wrong one. You'll end up a chaotic place full of added soundfiles and faulty textures. Then you back away from that horror and look for stable maps.

Looking for achievements often gives you an idea of what you can do with a character.

Pick a favorite. Some take time to get used to like the Spy or the Demoman.

Use spectator to watch other play or be a Medic and gain points by helping others (be carefull though, you'll see why the Penny Arcade strip was put there.)

Take the right mindset: a Spy isn't someone who blindly rushes towards someone. A Scout doesn't need to run in a straight line. A Medic MAY heal other players, but don't be someone's buttmonkey when they want you to.

Tip: always be on the lookout for Spies, guard your backside against a wall. If you see some silhouette shimmering, SHOOT IT.

My favorite is the Engineer, next up: Demoman.
